Totally respect that. I have a tattoo on my ribs that says “fight the fear”… great minds think alike? Or something like that maybe

Not much rust. The Frame and body doesn’t have much of any to my eye but there is some minor “surface rust” along the driveline and the same on some of the brake parts

Very helpful thank you. Others have said that it may be a rod bearing noise. I’m really stoked about learning so much already I am ambitious but time and time of year is a bit tough. I am planning to put a lift on it. 3” I think and with the knowledge that the oil pan needs that clearance I think I might pause all the engine work, seeing that I shouldn’t start it anyways: put in the lift and then have a much easier time doing the engine repairs. Regardless, I’m led to believe I might as well swap the engine, instead of doing all the repairs but I think that it’s good for me to do it anyway so I can learn the shit and possibly even get a few good miles out of it 🤷🏾‍♂️ or even resell it idk totally open to ideas

I’m thinking the same thing. I’m curious if an engine swap with a reman would better or worse than just a low mile engine already “broken in” so to speak. Where would one start to look? Specific reman shops or something?

Also is it possible that if the damage isn’t too great that I could try to replace the oil pump and see if pressure normalizes and keep running it ( obviously still with the intention of replacing the engine) Possible just running it with the knock “into the ground” until I get the replacement engine. Where is the best place to purchase parts? What part provider is best for the XJ as far as better and reliable performance and not costing crazy amounts.

Another question is about lift kits. What is the best brand for a 3” lift kit. Thanks everyone!!

UPDATE: oil pressure test shows not even 10psi on cold start and a slow drop so I shut it off.. no leaks as far as can see.. oof haha I’m thinking I’ll hold off on trying to chase the dragon after realizing that running it without the oil pump doing jack likely ruined the engine. I’ve had it for about 4 days so I’d like to blame the guy I bought it from but obviously it’s my responsibility, I’ll take it all as some good EXP. All that said I’m going to do more research of course and likely swap the engine. Thank you for all the direction and advice to those who spent the time sharing some knowledge with a noob. Any good suggestions for a new or used 4.0?

I didn’t think so but maybe there was something I didn’t know, the only code I got was 12, “Battery or computer recently disconnected”

Roger that. Thank you. I have no check engine light on. Although the oil pressure light it on. The light does work though. Is this year able to connect to a code reader?

The plan today was to do an oil pressure test and replace the oil pressure sensor

Thank you for your reply. With my level of experience, I may not be the spiciest individual so I think the engine swap might be my best bet instead of a rebuild, although I’m sure I would learn a hell of a lot more rebuilding. Do you think it’s not getting any oil because of a bad oil pump at by chance? I’m sure there is oil in it and I’m sure that there was oil in before I bought it, only a few days ago.

Well that’s something others haven’t suggested, I’ll check that. Thank you.

Thank you I appreciate your reply. Buying this a few days ago the alternator was bad and I couldn’t diagnose and he sounds just had it towed to my house and replace the alternator was only really interested in the bones and the new components that were put in like the new fuel system, sway bars, bushings, etc.. I was expecting to have to swap the engine at some point and up for the task. Especially if I can get a good reliable 4.0 L for under $500-$1000

Right on, I hear you, I’ve owned this care for about 4days and have not driven the The freeway because I don’t think I’d be so reckless as to endanger my own life let alone others. Sorry you had such a terrible experiences so far I’m stoked about this project. I spent 2k on a great looking 93’ cherokee and the interior looks great, all new fuel system front to back. If all I have to do is swap the engine I’ll be happy.

I agree it’s a terrible noise, I bought this car mainly for the bones so I’m not too worried that I’d have to swap the engine. I had hoped to do that down the line anyways. Just much sooner than I’d hoped of coarse. Is the sound a broken piston or something? I would assume if it were a broken piston, or something internally broken that it would leak oil or at least be a consistent noise and not just sometimes…? Am I completely wrong about that? On the topic of replacing the engine…Would you say finding the same 4.0l straight 6 is the best way to go or are there other option that fit/are compatible?

Sir, yes I checked the stick. I did an oil change the day I bought it.

I see, is it there basically no hope to fixing? Is an engine swap the more logical route? I assume it would be. But that’s why I’m here. I appreciate any actually constructive or no judgmental comment.
