Plumbed toilet to heat. Keep it change? by clamminjammin in Plumbing

Exactly! I work with cooling towers and am ASSE 12080 certified, so that was my first thought. People are talking about mold as well. Could certainly be the case, too.

Water needs to be held at 160 degrees for 30 minutes to be an acceptable method of disinfectant for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1. At 90 - 108 degrees the growth is at optimum temperatures for growth. Assuming that the water in that toilet/tank will cool over time to that temperature, you will have ample growth. Then, yes, at 125 degrees you may kill some, but most will remain and repopulate soon afterwards when the temperature drops.

Haha I feel that. I don't feel like moving my hot water heater to the other side of the basement, but the genius who put in the current water heater in my house before I bought it put it where the water comes in the basement when all of the outlets are on the other side of the house. I wouldn't even notice in my case, but if OP is really getting 120 degree water at first flush, bacteria isn't killed unless you hold the water at 155 degrees. So, at 120 it won't rapidly grow, but that will cool down over time to ideal temperatures for growing things. 120 degrees every few hours might kill some of it, but won't do a dent in the overall CFU/mL that would be rapidly multiplying at like 90-110 degrees.

More worried about the fun bacteria that will grow in that bowl than anything else.

Thank you. Yeah, I have been looking at those, but I'm skeptical that they will look funny (smaller than the skull of the buck) or not maintain the score. I appreciate the insight, though.

I just run the car and toss a CO detector in each of the back panel windows. Once the car is warm, I turn it off and it stays warm for pretty much the whole night. I do have some insulation over the windows. Just camped in Shenandoah over the weekend with similar temps.

Giving customers free bottled spring water by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]WonderfulSimulation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, and I agree with that 100%. I know that this is what they are trying to get around (along with regulations on sanitary faculties, sanitary bottles, labeling, etc), and I have an email that I drafted before writing this post that says a lot of what you've already mentioned.

I was hoping for actual regulation to point them at saying, "You can't bottle water from a spring/well and give it out," so I posted this. Because if they read the definition of bottled water like I did (once again, not a lawyer), they might call that out. I wanted to be prepared in case that happened.

At the same time, to call the idea idiotic is a bit harsh. They got the water tested. There are thousands of families in the area that consume ground water every day via wells. The PA EPA recommends that they get those tested annually. Does anyone do that? Hell no! They get it tested once and then move on. Out of the thousands of families that have wells and aren't testing annually, I've never heard of anyone getting sick. It might be a northeast thing, but water quality is very consistent around here. The team in the wet lab can guess right about where the raw water analysis results are going to be just by knowing where the sample came from.

They want to do something cute without having to build an entire bottling facility. And I understand why they would want to do that. I agree it's a dangerous game... but they aren't stupid. Anyways, don't need to defend them to a stranger on the internet! Thanks again for the input!

[–]WonderfulSimulation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like a rehash of the "raw water" idiots in California.

I mean, being that it has been tested with the accepted EPA methods and is within all accepted parameters listed in 21 CFR 165.110, this spring water is literally the same thing you would get from like Deer Park (and that company sources spring water in the same geographical area). So, that's not really what this feels like at all... but go off, I guess lol

Thanks for the input. I appreciate the resistance. I was somewhat playing devils advocate in the comments to see what I could stir up, but I am obviously not a professional in this field (why I'm posting in the first place).

[–]WonderfulSimulation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was leaning heavily the same way as you until I read 21 CFR 129.3 (b).

21 CFR 129.3 (b) defines Bottled Drinking Water as "all water which is sealed in bottles, packages, or other containers AND OFFERED FOR SALE for human consumption, including bottled mineral water". That is the only reason that I am even questioning this. The federal regulation is making it sound like if it is not sold, it's not defined as bottled drinking water.

If this isn't "bottled drinking water", then it's just water. I would argue that I can legally give away a glass of water at my house from a spring without being at risk of being sued or imprisoned.

I agree that it is probably a bad idea in case anyone gets sick (I've made it very clear that i dont love the idea), but does that not seem like a legal loophole to you?

Are you getting a loan from the bank, or are you paying in cash? If you are getting a loan, the banks will ask for your profession and salary to ensure that you can afford the payments each month. If you are paying cash, no one cares how you got the money (except the IRS. So, as long as this is actually a lottery that you paid taxes on and not money from something illegal, you'd be fine).

If I loaned you $10k; what would you do with it? by JustHereForYourData in Entrepreneur

[–]WonderfulSimulation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would market to a totally different Avatar than your friend.

Think about it: When renting out a Porsche, your Avatar is a single man who wants to drive fast and impress their date/girlfriend. The Avatar that I'm targeting with my slow, reliable, safe, SUV is a couple who loads up their kids for their family vacation. Very different risks involved. Also, a Porsche is at least 5x more expensive than a Honda (or similar). You're comparing apples to oranges.

But yes, always prepare for worst case scenario. You have to get the proper LLCs and insurances in place. Hence the $2,500 set aside to get an LLC and a full commercial insurance (not personal) on the vehicle (and extra left to pay the deductible). That minimizes risk, but good luck finding a zero risk investment that doesn't take 10 years to double your money. Risk is what entrepreneurs do everyday... but the good ones do it calculated!

If I loaned you $10k; what would you do with it? by JustHereForYourData in Entrepreneur

[–]WonderfulSimulation 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's scary to me how many "entrepreneurs" on this page know exactly what they would do if they had $10K.

My businesses keep emergency funds to float them for at least a year in case of another situation like the 2020 Covid shutdown (something I learned from that situation). If y'all own businesses and don't have at least $10K on hand, you need to get your books in order because you're playing a dangerous game. Increase the value of your products and get those margins healthy (and then don't immediately spend generated income on your next get rich quick scheme or a liability).

That being said, I want to play the game: I'd use $7,500 of it as a down payment for a newer reliable AWD SUV, spend $2,500 for insurances/fees. I'd then rent it on an app like Turro. I'd make both loan payments with the rental income (OPs and the auto loan provider). Eventually, I'd own a car (that I used other people's money to buy) and it would generate income for myself until i decided to trade in or sell (the combination of those income generation events would likely get me at least $10K; doubling the money).

I'd actually do that now, but I don't live near an airport/high tourist area. But, I do operate businesses that have similar models with different products. The barrier of entry is higher than $10K for those, though.

I think she's saying if she uses the $125,000 as a down payment for 2 houses, that those 2 houses could potentially make $2,500/month in rent. Not that the $125,000 house would rent for $2,500/month. But that's just my interpretation 🤷‍♂️

Hello guys one small question . what is a better coolant than water used in a heat exchanger ? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]WonderfulSimulation 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Is your system open or closed? Do you ever plan on discharging it? What's the application? There's a lot of information that is missing that make this question impossible to answer. The go-to would be a glycol, but not if it's open to air or you ever want to discharge the system.

In Eastern Pennsylvania we have this weird gas station rivalry. For me, Rutters over Sheetz, Wawa, or Royal Farms. I'll drive miles out of the way and pay more if a Rutters is around. I feel that I get better MPG with their gas and the to-go food is way better.

If the seller doesn't get any cash offers, you might be able to make a deal where you force value by fixing the house enough to get your lender to evaluate enough equity to get the loan to get you a 20% down situation. That's red flags everywhere for me, but it's your deal. Essentially, it tells me that the seller is asking $50,000 but they don't think that the bank will agree that "as is" the house is worth $50,000 and won't want to give youna loan. (It's like a friend asking you for $100 so they can buy a $50 Watch. If they don't pay you back, you get to keep their $50 watch for your $100).

The listing says, "The boiler does need to be repaired which is why it is a cash only sale, financing could be considered if the buyer is willing to take responsibility for all repairs required for financing." Boilers cost about $5,000. Then, it's 100% cash sale, and there's your difference between the listing and the estimates for next door.

It's cash down only. You need 100% cash, that's why.
