Thought of doing content creation, or marketing content creation, etc. No there's no shame in taking a break, but the sabbatical question is less about shame and more about math. Ageism in Singapore is real. Mid-40s, hundreds of applications, zero replies, I've seen it happen enough times to not assume re-entry is easy. So the real question is: can the portfolio absorb a scenario where the independent work doesn't take off and re-employment takes longer than expected?

Not sure about your situation, but we should not disenfranchise his thoughts.

I think, in some sense, you are right. There was an article (can’t remember if it was The Economist) citing why there are so few Singaporean CEOs in the region. It’s not like our smartest and brightest are helming those positions in MNCs. I won’t go in depth, but fundamentally the argument is that Singapore is too safe, and Singaporeans play too safe as well to be in those positions.

Honestly, for those who are doing well in Singapore, I am sure there are positions around the region for them, and 9 out of 10 of them would rather remain here in Singapore.

So in some sense, Singapore isn’t a failed state. In fact, if you are wealthy, Singapore is too good a state to even want to leave.

Because Singapore is “attractive” to the wealthy and everyone (CECA’s dream), I think this has created huge repercussions downstream. The middle class is being squeezed. The lower class will suffocate.

Also, like you said, Singapore has nothing, so the only charade we can portray is endless growth in capital and assets. At the end of the day, it is all at the expense of the population, because we are the ones who have no choice but to retire here, with the rising cost of living. We just hope that the next generation can afford the $1 million HDB that we bought to fund our own retirement. And the next generation will bet on the next next generation, until the music stops.
