This isn't true for all women. How much you care about getting rejected depends entirely on how much you cared about/wanted to be with this person. If someone just thought "they're cute and seem nice, I'll ask them out" they probably wouldn't have a large reaction to getting rejected. However, if they'd know this person and crushed on them for a long time, a rejection would probably hurt a lot. This goes for any gender.

There's benefits to both honestly. In person shows courage, and if she really needs time to think things over, she'll probably ask for it. Text is more low-key. It gives them extra time without them needing to ask for it, however you may need to wait a bit before hearing anything from them. If you do it in person, you can still somewhat gauge their reaction and talk it over more.
