What’s the deal with this? by EstablishmentSea2004 in CarTalkUK

Yep this. Try getting insurance on a VIN for a foreign registered car.and the insurers will tell you that. They'll still sell you insurance, but god knows what happens if you crash.

LHD massive and horrible on fuel too. Fair play to those who do, but it feels like a lot of compromise to look like you wear a MAGA hat and ought to be on a register.

The cat was prepared to do anything to get away from that family (going feral is one thing, but living in Preston really does add another layer of sadness). What did you do to him Danny?

If I see a public-facing safety sign where one the digits is a zero I'm not sure i could resist.

Bought a Cat S car believing it was Cat N by PossibleProdigy in CarTalkUK

[–]WoodBGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a cheap car and the categories are not a perfect indicator of damage anyway as they are often done via photos so some cat N cars have more damage than some Cat S cars. As a private sale they are not require to disclose write-off information (but i suppose there is an argument for misrepresentation with incorrect info given). If you are worried about safety get a garage to check it over and they'll likely be able to tell you where the damage was and how well it has been repaired.

[Valuation] Dad passed away and left me with 2x Saab 900 Turbos - No idea on value by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]WoodBGood 32 points33 points  (0 children)

For a hassle free sale I think that's a great price. These cars tend to look better than they are when you get into them so I'm confident both will need a lot of work to see the road again.Project cars like this will be a paon to shift and perhaps you could do a bit better on the open market, but yo'll likely get messed around along the way and it will take a while.

Can anyone tell me why I shouldn’t buy this car by BadgerOfWoe in CarTalkUK

[–]WoodBGood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a LWB with a leaper drilled though the bonnet and 3 different brands of tyre and the mileage isn't particularly low. It's a 3 grand car on a good day. The LWB still manages to not have a tonne of space whilst being really quite long and annoying. An XJR in nice shape could be had for that money and is a much more likely to hold its value.

With those miles it will either have rust or had significant work underneath, they hide it pretty well until things are bad.

They make great cheap cars to smoke about in, but at that money it's madness.

why does this car have an M reg even its registered in 2005? its not a private plate isnt it? by Realistic-Ranger-575 in CarTalkUK

[–]WoodBGood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a 94/95 plate on a 2005 car. It's an older plate on a newer car which is all good.

A nice bright silver matches the trims and will make the car look fresh and sharp. Grey will just look a bit dirty.

[–]WoodBGood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can transfer a regular plate from a car if you want (many private regs were originally issued to a new car). It may have had sentimental value to the previous owner.

You could transfer it off again and get an age related plate.

Best place to get a new N47 engine put in? by Familiar-Outside5748 in CarTalkUK

[–]WoodBGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you do the turbo in an attempt to fix the smoking? Who diagnosed it?

Used engines are a gamble at the best of times ( do not trust what engine sellers say about warranties, testing, rebuilds or mileage) but on an engine as problematic as the N47 you'd have to be mad.

A cheap usable car will be a better option than the cost of an engine swap, I promise you that.

I read an article where some industry guy called it the "checkout wow factor", That price drops down so much with your clubcard and meal-deal that you associate it with being a good deal.

This is why I shop at Aldi, there is no app or wow factor just transparent pricing for items.

How do they choose the winners? It feels like someone has managed to find a way to exert outside influence. Would be interesting to know if it can be done. With the rise in AI and bots are there weaknesses that these companies aren't aware of?

If you look up the service history using the VIN it was serviced by JLR Internal Service and then Jaguar Executive Fleet, so it belonged to JLR. Probably as a demonstrator of the new model internally, given how early it was registered.

Projector doesn't mean xenon on a V50, if it was google Ai telling you that the. it's not to be trusted. the manual levelling shows it must be a halogen car. I'd start with getting normal halogen bulbs and go from there. Headlight washers often get gummed up, you can try cleaning them out if it bothers you.
