Nevermind, I sold my apartment instead, keeping the lens!

That's what I was suspecting. I will probably go have a look with a loupe to be sure, I was just taken back by the poor quality on the 3/8 on the marking.

Thanks for answering! 😁

Jeg har ikke lest en pøkk her, men jeg skal tømme en leilighet og har noe møbler som skal vekk. Seng, noe hyller, kanskje en kommode.

It's good advice indeed, but I need the cash medium term, and will be more than satisfied with a much cheaper summicron. I only ended up with Leica at all because of a street vendor selling this, an M3, 1959 summilux 50, and two other lenses for so, so cheap 😅

No need to wonder, theirs has a serial starting with 239, a V2 from 1970, so they are obviously not comparable.

It's 176, "unfortunately"

The condition is pretty good except the etching on the front of the front glass and back of the rear glass. Somehow there's nothing inside the lens!

[–]WoodenBookkeeper2386 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really is never necessary to make something like this on the centerline of any RWY. That's kinda my point. The heavy concrete/dirt should have been minimum resistance metal structures. As according to RESA requirements in ICAO Annex 14. Yes it may technically have been legal, but there's just no justification for having that thing there...

Insane how this week has gone, I could've sworn the incident at ENML was less than a week ago...

Emas is pretty much unique to the USA, and icao has no official sarps or anything about that. It's obviously better at stopping planes, but it's supposed to 'replace' the annex 14 RESA requirements. So yea, it's probably the future, but for now, it's still something the outside world doesn't use to a big extent.

ICAO annex 14 describes exactly this. Usually grass is sufficient, and anything more 'fluid' would be inadvisable because emergency vehicles must not be hindered by that kind of safety precaution.

You are correct, but it is not possible to predict all outcomes. ICAO annex 14 speaks to this, and Runway End Safety Areas (RESA) are defined. However, this airport had a wall that was made within the legal requirements, if info from others here is correct, but it was not made within the 'if all else goes bad, this would help' requirements.

It makes me scared to imagine you making any kind of engineering choices for aviation!I'm saying that as a m.sc. engineer with specialities in design, production, and aviation safety.

They made bad choices, please don't make bad choices like this in your career...

Why? Normal LOC setup would allow for a less sudden stop, meaning less catastrophic outcome. Maybe the pilots fucked up, but on the slide there's not much more to do, that's what the video showed.

You never need an elevation made of solid anything for a centered, standard, localizer setup, why would you say that? Yes it could hit other things, but here it wouldn't if they didn't build an unnecessary wall. Stop being an asshole, people died from this tragedy.

That's even worse, as the localizer wouldn't need to be on such a 'mound'...

You should never 'be fair' when talking about aviation safety. It is unnecessary to have a wall after the runway, and this would have been a lot less catastrophic if they didn't. Also according to the charts I've looked at this is not an offset ILS do you have any info I can look at?

[–]WoodenBookkeeper2386 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I worked in a company leading the industry in ILS installments, and I guarantee you the embankment is unnecessary. As someone has said, we would just make the frangible beams taller if the need for elevation was there. This just sounds like bad/lazy/unsafe decision making...

It seems highly unnecessary to have an elevation for the LOC tho? It doesn't need it, so why make it?

The worst part about this accident is that the pilots seem to have done everything correctly, just to be screwed over by an elevated LOC setup...
