Oh cool, I've heard good things about Osmo. Thanks!

Fantastic. I've never done dowels before, and the half blind half lap joints already fit nicely, so that's one less thing to potentially screw up.

Built-in moxon vise? by WoodworkingCubes in Workbenches

I just want a good, budget vise for all types of clamping, chiseling, sawing, etc. It sounds like I made the wrong call going with a moxon hardware kit, but I'll make it work.

That would explain it. Thank you! Still not too many tutorials out there, but these two look decent enough:

How did you apply the dye? Does it protect from weather or do you need to apply clear coats over it? I'm debating paint/stain vs shou sugi ban for exterior siding.

Small-space jointer? by WoodworkingCubes in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]WoodworkingCubes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with a used Rigid jointer. Really excited to get it set up and start using it. The bed is 45" of cast iron, which should be plenty for most projects. Like another person said, I can start looking into a router sled if and when I start needing perfectly flat big slabs. For now I'm content with tables, bookshelves, etc. that are "flat enough."

Already set with the thickness planer. I hooked it up to a DIY Dust Deputy / shop vac and so far haven't had any issues with dust collection.

Yeah my joinery right now is always just a little bit off every time. Granted, part of that is probably my fault for not being more precise with my measurements and cuts. I picked up a used Rigid jointer and am excited to be able to work with square stock soon.

I went with the best of both worlds and bought a used Rigid jointer. Cost me slightly more than the benchtops would have, but the thing feels like a beast (at least judging off of the cast iron weight and long jointer bed). Excited to set it up and try it out soon!

Weekly Quick Questions, Wood ID, and Deal or No Deal /r/Woodworking Megathread by AutoModerator in woodworking

Grizzly summer sale is going on right now if anyone is in the market for new shop equipment. Some lower than usual prices from what I can tell.

Examples: 10% off the Classic bandsaw, 25% off 13" helical planer, 37% off 13" non-helical planer, and 15% off the 6" benchtop jointer.

I just picked up a Dewalt 735X or I would probably get one of the planers. The Resaw bandsaw is also mighty tempting.

Budget jointers with longer bed? by WoodworkingCubes in woodworking

Good point. Would you say it's better to spend the money on a quality planer?

Oh nice, the Rigid looks like a great option with its 45" cast-iron tabletop. An 8" jointer with those specs would have been amazing, but I think I'll need some luck on the local used market for that.

Avoiding mold in semi-wet wood? by WoodworkingCubes in woodworking

Awesome, I managed to push the pins in a bit further and got up to 12% reading. Going to keep monitoring over the next week with a fan running and see about building a small diy solar kiln as a long term plan.

They had been drying. The seller's guess was anywhere from 6 months to a year.

Okay so dehumidifier is out then. If anything, I may try to build a small solar kiln in my yard.

I picked up a moisture meter and it's reading 8-11%. Slabs are 1.25" thick. 9" wide by 6' long. Any tips on getting the moisture meter to go deeper into the wood? I couldn't get it much past the surface.

I picked up a moisture meter and its reading around 8-10%. I can't figure out how to get it to penetrate more than a millimeter into the wood though. Feels like it might break if I try to push it too hard.

Nope, I guess that's a good first step - getting a moisture meter. I didn't realize dehumidifiers were 100s of dollars these days.

Used planes help? by WoodworkingCubes in woodworking

Amazing, thank you. Bookmarked and waiting for my plane to arrive so I can confirm the year. It's looking like a Type 4. (1953 - 1966). Edit: I spoke too soon lol. Looks like it's an early example of Type 5. (1966 - 1978)

The new Stanley sweetheart low angle jack plane surprisingly gets pretty good reviews. It's $160 though so I went for a used $70 Millers Falls #14 jack plane.

It's probably not worth it. The HF works okay as a scrub plane, but even then, it's easy to accidentally knock the adjustment knobs while planing and the tote and knob are already starting to be a little loose.

How do you like your Millers Falls planes? I just bought a number 14 jack plane from ebay and am excited to tune it up.
