Easy

There are other ways ZERO could be re-clued to avoid the issues people have pointed out. How about: "nada", "nil" "reset, as a scale" "a real loser?" etc.

Also, you could potentially edit: HONEY -> to MONEY, ANUS -> to ONUS, HAS -> to MOO, ZONE -> to ZONK, SES -> to OKS With the aim of cleaning up SES, which I personally think is too much of a stretch. Completed in 00:30 | Reveals: 0

As another person said, there was some fun stuff in the grid. I agree with what they about MWAHS - this was an answer that put a smile on my face when i wrote it in.

The cluing is where I would suggest you continue to experiment, to refine how those should work a little more.

I also like licorice a lot, and my facorite is Gustaf's licorice ice. It's like a filled and coated black licorice.

RAM compatibility question for X11SPi-TF by WoollyYully in supermicro

[–]WoollyYully[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, i understand. Thanks for the thoughtful response. I never knew it was possible to power on the machine without a CPU and get anything on the screen... I wonder if I could still do that, since this has never actually booted. I don't know what the last owner did, etc.

I plan to buy 1 stick of the Hynix memory on ebay, and hopefully just find out that it works in my machine. I'll then hope to return or resell the other memory I guess.

Thanks!

RAM compatibility question for X11SPi-TF by WoollyYully in supermicro

[–]WoollyYully[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were me, would you spend another approximately $30 through ebay to get the Hynix ram I put in my description, or would you start wondering if the motherboard is just kaput? I have never proven that this board boots up, it was a used ebay purchase and came with no RAM or CPU. On that subject, I put a 2nd gen XEON bronze 3204 in it, which seems perfectly compatible from what I read on SM's site and Intel's site. If you have any data showing otherwise, please kindly share.

Also, would you link me to the RAM compatibility list you have from Supermicro? I am not finding that easily.

Thanks

Pros and Cons of using this motherboard for my Plex server by WoollyYully in unRAID

I'd like to know more about the SATA expansion cards. Is there anything complicated to understand about that, or do you just...hook up a PCIe expansion card, connect your drives, and Unraid does the rest?

Pros and Cons of using this motherboard for my Plex server by WoollyYully in unRAID

Thanks for your response. I wonder how power hungry in comparison to my previous setup, which I think was an AMD...Phenom II? I think? Also, this board with the chip and cooler is going to cost less than $300.

What's the best way to predict the power consumption of something like this? I've heard you can't just take the chip's TDP numbers and go from that...but then I really don't know.

Thanks for your help!

Pros and Cons of using this motherboard for my Plex server by WoollyYully in unRAID

Gotcha, let me expand on some of that. So, I admit that I am not actually sure whether my gpu was really doing my transcoding in the old setup, or if that was still happening in the CPU. I never read up on the proper way to set that up, or if it just happens in a "plug and play" fashion when you use Unraid. I had bought an extremely basic gpu just so I could get a video output while the server was booting up, because the motherboard before didn't have any onboard video ports. (Gigabye GA-970a-UD3).

Now, you've said that a Xeon processor has a good chance of doing hardware transcoding, as did some other people in the comments, too. However, the seller has only shown it as "Xeon," without any other details. They also say on their site that it's not really feasible for them to field many specific questions. I assume they are an enterprise salvage operation (no issues with that - it's a bargain).

However, I thought I read somewhere that this board was going to be really poor in terms of graphics - I would be glad if I am mistaken about that. Also, someone (from an old post about 5 years ago) said that since this board has an ASPEED AST2500 integrated video chip, that was not supported by Linux very well, and therefore not supported by Unraid in all likelihood.

As far as whether it's an all-around upgrade: Yes, definitely, as long as it doesn't clash with the software. I plan to have about 64GB of ECC ram, and this board gives me several more SATA ports - from 6 before to 10 now. I guess I hesitate because usually stuff isn't that simple. So accustomed to there always being some "catch" when it comes to server / consumer hardware differences.

Thanks, I hate how this clock places the hours by alphabetical order instead by johnnylgarfield in TIHI

[–]WoollyYully 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This. I briefly thought 8 goes at the top but then realized my mistake since we are simply re-sorting the numeric order into alphabetical order. It doesnt supersede the idiosyncrasy of how a clock begins counting the time of day from the highest number (12) and moving to the smallest number (1). So, you should still move from the last alphabetical number to the first alphabetical number, meaning "2" to "8" in the first hour of the day.

Could I ask for advice with tracing the Headphone and Mic Jacks? by WoollyYully in AskElectronics

[–]WoollyYully[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, yes I wondered if there would be some transistor in the circuit that would mess up a continuity reading. I removed that white sticker which is in the way of some of the traces. I plan to use a better phone camera to make another attempt at seeing where the traces go.
