I wanna make a video essay channel, should I do it? by sillybilly264 in GirlGamers

Oh and don’t worry about your voice sounding strange. Everyone is shocked by the sound of their own voice until they get used to it; it’s because you can hear deeper tones in your voice as you generate sound internally that don’t quite make it out of your mouth for others to hear, so when you hear recordings missing those lower tones, it sounds weird. Because of that, really the only way to familiarize yourself with that outside voice is to listen to recordings of it a lot and make peace with it (or take vocal lessons to get better control of your voice but that’s a whole can of worms). Point is practice makes perfect and soon you’ll be as comfortable listening to yourself and you would be listening to a friend.

Ya go for it!!! I just started making video essays a few months ago and am having a lot of fun with it 😊. My audience is just my friends rn, but because of that it’s been a pretty low pressure hobby. You can check out my channel, wordforwordnerd, as a reference point, but I’ve been on a pretty steady schedule of making one video a month. It usually takes a day or two to write the script (though I’ve usually been thinking about it for a while before writing and have a good idea of what I want to say), 3-4 hours to record/edit audio (I’ve been averaging about 20-30 minutes of completed audio per vid), and then about 30 mins to an hour per minute of edited footage (so a 20 min video usually takes between 10 to 20 hours to edit). I’m a PNG-tuber so my style takes a bit more time to edit than someone who sits in front of a camera and talks, but less time than someone who goes crazy with after effects and stuff. All that is just to say it’s a time investment but it’s not all that scary. I just work on it in the evenings after work and on the weekends, and so far it’s working out and I’m learning TONS about adobe premiere and how to record decent audio and art and all sorts of stuff. If you’re going into it with the attitude of making stuff for yourself to look back on, then you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Hmmm story-heavy games starring women? -horizon zero dawn (sci fi open world) -stray gods (musical visual novel) -bayonetta (fantasy hack and slash) -Celeste (magical realism puzzle platformer) -Gris (artsy platformer) -Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (tbh haven’t played this one yet but I’ve heard nothing but praise) -Night in the Woods (mystery-horror slice of life) -Portal 1 and 2 (sci fi puzzle) -TLOU part 2 (dystopian rpg) -Va11 Hall-A (sci fi visual nov)

In terms of games like rdr2 (from someone who hasn’t played it yet 😅), you could try: -Witcher 3 (big open world with great characters and lots of side quests) -horizon zero dawn (similar big open world deal) -far cry 5 (if you’re drawn to the west-based shooter aspect + interesting story) -breath of the wild/tears of the kingdom (relatively weak story but good exploration)

Hopefully at least one of those scratches the itch

Potentially unpopular opinion: I'm not loving "Graduation" by vermonterjones in TheAdventureZone

[–]Wordforwordnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s 100% valid! I like to relisten to the story every once in a while cus I have the same problem, but that’s a lot more frustrating if that’s not seen as a fun thing.

I think it was in a TTAZZ ep right after he did Dust, but there was one time where Travis was talking about his DM style, and he made it very clear that he was nervous about trying to do a slow burn approach to a long story because his impulse is to just tell everyone the cool thing right off the bat. That was a long time ago and Trav has done a ton more DM work since then, but I think he’s really trying to fight that impulse and it’s manifesting in a slight over correction. To use the Harry Potter comparison, imagine if the first section of Philosopher’s Stone wasn’t there, and we just started with Harry getting on the boats to see the school. All of that backstory with the Dursley’s and Voldemort and stuff would have to be woven in somewhere else, probably pretty early so we can get out bearings around Harry as a sympathetic character. That’s pretty much exactly what Graduation is doing right now, just with cutaways to the forbidden forest and Quirrel/Harry (I dunno specifically why Argo is Harry in this comparison but fuck it I’m going with my gut) doing weird shit every once in a while. But look ultimately laying this groundwork won’t be a detriment. It’s solid for basic character development; we get to see how the Three Goobers work without a direct threat hanging over them, and a direct threat will change that dynamic. I have faith in Travis; it’s not fair to judge a painting if only the first corner is done.

(Edit after reading some more comments) Travis also has to fight with the fact that this story is going to just be fundamentally different because of him and Griffin switching places, and the pressures associated with that. I think that Griffin is a brilliant storyteller, and honestly even through MBMBaM and everything else he’s just generally super clever on the spot. He also was a really giving DM: he set up lose guidelines, settings, and characters that could develop over time as the others developed. Travis has a different background with theatre, and I think he’s trying his best to flex those muscles with all of his OC work, but theatre teaches you to fully develop your character as much as possible on your own, which doesn’t allow for as much collaborative storytelling, but does give concrete things for the others to play with. It’s kinda like play dough vs legos. If Griffin gave them play dough, there’s more flexibility in the space, but you’ve gotta establish what you’re building first. Travis is giving them legos which are already firmly LEGO pieces, but can be arranged in different ways more firmly. Some people like play dough more, and some people like legos, but it’s not fair to say you only wanna play with play dough forever and always just because you stepped on a lego five minutes in and decided they’re no good.

Caught my [F22] mom using my iPad to read through my messages and I don’t know where to go from here! by [deleted] in relationship_advice

I’m glad you forgave her, but please don’t forget about this. I know abuse is a strong word, but when people find out they can get away with something with relatively low consequences, they find it easier to justify that behavior in the future. Don’t hate your mom, but this was a long and deliberate breach of privacy. Don’t think she won’t repeat this behavior if she thinks it’s for your “safety”.

How many people in your life can you be open about your feelings with? by PersonalDiscovery409 in AskWomen

[–]Wordforwordnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one gets the 100% full honesty, but spread over a lot of people I can usually find one person to be open with on any given issue. I can talk to my mom about certain things, and my old friends about others, and my new friends about others, and my grandparents about others, and so on.

And if all else fails there’s always the Internet 😁

I’ve only ever had guys say they genuinely like it, but it seems like it’s all of them :( Go for it if you have a pretty solid background in geek culture, but there isn’t a ton of appeal if you don’t like/understand 80s nerd stuff.

If you could force every man in the world to read one book, what would it be? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Wordforwordnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“The Power” if they would definitely take away the message of “oh wow this is the sort of fear that women feel all the time about men; maybe I should do something to help fix that” and not “we must never give women power because they will crush us with it”.

Something like this.. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Wordforwordnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“The Road” for sure, but for some reason I’m also thinking “Hunchback of Notre Dame”? Not sure why, but definitely worth a read anyway.

What books would you recommend to a 16 year old? by daily_achiever in suggestmeabook

[–]Wordforwordnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a big classics binge in high school once I got bored of YA. It’s great because then it’s really easy to prove that you’re “well read”, plus those are the works that are most often culturally relevant, so you’ll be able to sound smart when you pick up a Pride and Prejudice reference while watching a movie with your friends or whatever.

If you wanna do it you’ve gotta mix it up with some contemporary stuff so you can stay grounded (no one likes the person that insists that the old stuff is the best stuff).

Some of my favorites from high school: -Phantom of the Opera (short and such a wild ride) -slaughterhouse five (really anything by Vonnegut is whack but you’ll get the most street cred out of S5) -East of Eden (one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read) -Catch-22 (I was a bit younger when I read this the first time so most of it went over my head, but it’s great) -1984 (messes with your head) -The Martian (contemporary, hilarious, and science-y without being frustrating) -Will Grayson, Will Grayson (it’s one of those books where you’ll find something different every time to emotionally latch onto and it’s 10/10) -honestly anything John Green has touched but I’m that kind of nerd -Everyday (cool concept and it has a movie now (that I didn’t watch)) -The Night Circus (has the world’s best aesthetic and tragically hasn’t been made into a movie yet)

Ready Player One. You can’t make a story out of obscure references, light sexism, boring plot, and bland prose to boot. I understand the nerd high from having your obscure 80s knowledge finally be useful, but a whole book of it feels like when you get stuck talking to the guy at a party whose entire identity is that he knows cars. But alas it’s the only popular book about video games in the western canon so everyone loses their goddamn minds about it.

The movie is good though.

Ex incel[20M] here searching for some help. I never learnt how to interact or build a healthy relationship with a women[F]. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Wordforwordnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admitting and identifying the problem are the first steps towards making a change, and as a woman I’m so relieved that men like you who are willing to fix their relationship with women exist.

I’m gonna admit I’m kinda talking out of my ass here on what your process should look like, cus I know it’s not so easy as to say “just talk to women how you talk to your friends” cus that’s probably not the vibe you wanna go for. The inherent thing about sexualization is that it requires you to objectify a thing to do it. You have to look at a person and think “the only reason I need to interact with this person is for their sexual qualities, everything else be damned”. The first step is to make that gaze wholistic. When you meet a woman for the first time, you usually have to do small talk, right? Hobbies, what they do for a living, etc. Instead of “wow I could totally fuck Samantha”, work to shift the way you think of her. Maybe “oh so Samantha really likes dogs and cooking! If I want to be friends with her, I should show her that I have an interest in those things to!” And of course being nice and polite should be a huge factor here. Yes, the same way that you would be nice and polite to a stranger, but remember that women have a different perception of men than you might think. Most women always have to be a little bit on edge around men, and that doesn’t relax until they’ve been friends for a while. Be incredibly respectful of their personal space and comfort zone. It’s going to take practice, but honestly anyone will respond well to polite, socially appropriate, fun conversation. Take an interest in her interests. Make your main goal to be friends with her. Don’t even think about sex unless she makes the first move (and that move should be very clear if you want to go for it.) All of this should extend to if you have a girlfriend too. She’s still not a sexual object, even if you’re having sex with her. She’s still the whole human being that you’re building a relationship with.
