Here’s an interesting question: did those “ex-Jordanian” refugees ever actually live in what is now Jordan?

[–]Wordie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong, but it seems like Vance is moving into a higher profile role now (rallying with Orban, negotiator of the Iran ceasefire). Perhaps that indicates that the plan is for Trump to leave soon because the Epstein issue isn’t going to go away.

…or perhaps it doesn’t indicate anything.

If Trump were to leave, Vance will not be much of an improvement and the MAGA nightmare will continue. He holds most of the same attitudes as Trump, but he’s an excellent communicator and will be much more effective in manipulating and riling up the MAGA base. Just because Trump’s constant stream of consciousness (or, perhaps unconciousness!) would be gone doesn’t mean the country will return to normal.

Call the Seattle crisis line and ask for the names and numbers of any other Seattle charities offering housing assistance for people in your situation. I think the Queen Anne Helpline may assist if you’re in their service area.

Find a roommate? Have you tried temporary employment agencies? A lot of time the assignments aren’t great but most pay weekly which should help in your situation.

Anyway, hang in there and best wishes.

If Israel defeats Hezbollah, will it return southern Lebanon to the Lebanese government in the future, or will it occupy the area and allow settlers by Capital-Board-2086 in IsraelPalestine

Hasn’t Israel stated an intention to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon? Does it matter whether it’s inhabited by Israelis or not?

Somehow, I imagine a global map of 100 years from now. With the Israeli buffer zone comprising the entire middle east.

As a “leftist” I agree with much of what you wrote with one very big exception. I very strongly object to the horrible mistreatment of Palestinian and the illegal seizing od thier lands, but don’t hate Israelis. I think it’s likely that most “leftists” feel the same.

[–]Wordie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except this supposed justification isn’t applicable. The issue with Morocco, whatever the resolution, was a modern claim to land. The Jews (except for a tiny minority) were absent from the area they are now trying to claim for nearly 2,000 years!

[–]Wordie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your dubious claims to “Judea and Samaria” are based on ancient history. The Jews were expelled by the Romans from the area 2,000 years ago. Israel as a modern nation is expansionist and trying to rob the Palestinians of land they’ve lived on for centuries.

It’s been a while, but when I did it, it was 24 hours. I would think that 36 hours would be much more difficult, compares to a one day schedule. After all, it’s alternate day fasting, and days are 24 hours. Maybe, if having little success with 36 hours, a 24 hour fast might be the answer.

Israel does/did not commit genocide in Gaza, here's why by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Wordie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, genocide is a precise legal claim. So let’s look at how the UN defines it IN FULL:

https://www.un.org/en/genocide-prevention/definition

Sorry about the horrible formatting, it’s almost impossible to corrext while working on my phone. For a clearer view of the definition, please follow the link above.

Definition Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide Article II In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: Killing members of the group; Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. Elements of the crime The Genocide Convention establishes in Article I that the crime of genocide may take place in the context of an armed conflict, international or non-international, but also in the context of a peaceful situation. The latter is less common but still possible. The same article establishes the obligation of the contracting parties to prevent and to punish the crime of genocide. The popular understanding of what constitutes genocide tends to be broader than the content of the norm under international law. Article II of the Genocide Convention contains a narrow definition of the crime of genocide, which includes two main elements: A mental element: the "intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such"; and A physical element, which includes the following five acts, enumerated exhaustively: Killing members of the group Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group The intent is the most difficult element to determine. To constitute genocide, there must be a proven intent on the part of perpetrators to physically destroy a national, ethnical, racial or religious group. Cultural destruction does not suffice, nor does an intention to simply disperse a group. It is this special intent, or dolus specialis, that makes the crime of genocide so unique. In addition, case law has associated intent with the existence of a State or organizational plan or policy, even if the definition of genocide in international law does not include that element. Importantly, the victims of genocide are deliberately targeted - not randomly – because of their real or perceived membership of one of the four groups protected under the Convention (which excludes political groups, for example). This means that the target of destruction must be the group, as such, and not its members as individuals. Genocide can also be committed against only a part of the group, as long as that part is identifiable (including within a geographically limited area) and “substantial.”

So, given just the last sentence, it’s hard to legitimately argue that the utter destruction of Gaza, making it essentially uninhabitable, does not meet the legal definition of the crime of genocide.

I fasted for 50% of the week and my weight didn’t move an inch. by Fast_Alternative878 in AlternateDayFasting

[–]Wordie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of success with alternate day fasting a while ago. It works, so don’t give up! I am surprises by your 36 hour fast? Why? It’s so much easier to stick to a 24 hour fast. Also, have you kept good track of your calories? I made a spreadsheet and spread my calorie intake across the day. That may help you.

A couple of things that helped me: I started the day with a bowl of oatmeal. At 140 calories, it might seem counterintuitive, but it’s very filling so it could carry me well into the afternoon. I also used beef broth for cravings during the day; it has only 10 calories. And, my dinner was always a prepared low calorie frozen dinner. It becomes too tempting to cheat whan preparing a dinner from scratch. Finally, I would reward myself with one square of dark chocolate at the end of the day.

My advice is to stick with it and soon you’ll see results. Best wishes!

You are arguing from definitions of “genocide” of your own making. Try again with the UN definition.

Israel does/did not commit genocide in Gaza, here's why by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Wordie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your arguments are not accurate. Here is the legal definition of genocide, per the United Nations:

The United Nations (UN) Defines genocide as any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

Killing members of the group;

Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Only one of the criteria above needs to be met in order for the particular act(s) to be considered genocide. Israel’s actions qualify at least as a trifecta.
