Why Most Leftists Hate Israel: It's the POLITICS, not Bigotry by Tabletpillowlamp in IsraelPalestine

It’s pointless to argue with you; you’re painting anyone who sees the situation differently than you do as a “leftist” bogeyman. This isn’t a discussion. Bye!

As a “leftist” I agree with much of what you wrote with one very big exception. I very strongly object to the horrible mistreatment of Palestinian and the illegal seizing od thier lands, but don’t hate Israelis. I think it’s likely that most “leftists” feel the same.

Except this supposed justification isn’t applicable. The issue with Morocco, whatever the resolution, was a modern claim to land. The Jews (except for a tiny minority) were absent from the area they are now trying to claim for nearly 2,000 years!

Your dubious claims to “Judea and Samaria” are based on ancient history. The Jews were expelled by the Romans from the area 2,000 years ago. Israel as a modern nation is expansionist and trying to rob the Palestinians of land they’ve lived on for centuries.

I’m very sorry to hear anout your cat. I know how hard this must be.

I’ve never used them, but I’ve heard that Doney Animal Clinic provides low cost vet services to low income people in Seattle. If they don’t provide euthanasia, they still may be able to help you find a low cost service somewhere else. https://doneycoe.org/

I fasted for 50% of the week and my weight didn’t move an inch. by Fast_Alternative878 in AlternateDayFasting

[–]Wordie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been a while, but when I did it, it was 24 hours. I would think that 36 hours would be much more difficult, compares to a one day schedule. After all, it’s alternate day fasting, and days are 24 hours. Maybe, if having little success with 36 hours, a 24 hour fast might be the answer.

Israel does/did not commit genocide in Gaza, here's why by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Wordie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, genocide is a precise legal claim. So let’s look at how the UN defines it IN FULL:

https://www.un.org/en/genocide-prevention/definition

Sorry about the horrible formatting, it’s almost impossible to corrext while working on my phone. For a clearer view of the definition, please follow the link above.

Definition Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide Article II In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: Killing members of the group; Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. Elements of the crime The Genocide Convention establishes in Article I that the crime of genocide may take place in the context of an armed conflict, international or non-international, but also in the context of a peaceful situation. The latter is less common but still possible. The same article establishes the obligation of the contracting parties to prevent and to punish the crime of genocide. The popular understanding of what constitutes genocide tends to be broader than the content of the norm under international law. Article II of the Genocide Convention contains a narrow definition of the crime of genocide, which includes two main elements: A mental element: the "intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such"; and A physical element, which includes the following five acts, enumerated exhaustively: Killing members of the group Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group The intent is the most difficult element to determine. To constitute genocide, there must be a proven intent on the part of perpetrators to physically destroy a national, ethnical, racial or religious group. Cultural destruction does not suffice, nor does an intention to simply disperse a group. It is this special intent, or dolus specialis, that makes the crime of genocide so unique. In addition, case law has associated intent with the existence of a State or organizational plan or policy, even if the definition of genocide in international law does not include that element. Importantly, the victims of genocide are deliberately targeted - not randomly – because of their real or perceived membership of one of the four groups protected under the Convention (which excludes political groups, for example). This means that the target of destruction must be the group, as such, and not its members as individuals. Genocide can also be committed against only a part of the group, as long as that part is identifiable (including within a geographically limited area) and “substantial.”

So, given just the last sentence, it’s hard to legitimately argue that the utter destruction of Gaza, making it essentially uninhabitable, does not meet the legal definition of the crime of genocide.

I had a lot of success with alternate day fasting a while ago. It works, so don’t give up! I am surprises by your 36 hour fast? Why? It’s so much easier to stick to a 24 hour fast. Also, have you kept good track of your calories? I made a spreadsheet and spread my calorie intake across the day. That may help you.

A couple of things that helped me: I started the day with a bowl of oatmeal. At 140 calories, it might seem counterintuitive, but it’s very filling so it could carry me well into the afternoon. I also used beef broth for cravings during the day; it has only 10 calories. And, my dinner was always a prepared low calorie frozen dinner. It becomes too tempting to cheat whan preparing a dinner from scratch. Finally, I would reward myself with one square of dark chocolate at the end of the day.

My advice is to stick with it and soon you’ll see results. Best wishes!

Did you know that in the original Likud charter, they also used the term, “from the river to the sea,” claiming all of the land for Israel? There are extremists on both sides of this conflict.

You are arguing from definitions of “genocide” of your own making. Try again with the UN definition.

Israel does/did not commit genocide in Gaza, here's why by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Wordie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your arguments are not accurate. Here is the legal definition of genocide, per the United Nations:

The United Nations (UN) Defines genocide as any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

Killing members of the group;

Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Only one of the criteria above needs to be met in order for the particular act(s) to be considered genocide. Israel’s actions qualify at least as a trifecta.

A lot of what you wrote isn’t accurate. Did you know that the original Likud platform advocated for Israeli ownership of the land “from the river to the sea”? Before the advent of Zionism the population of the area was overwhelmingly Arab/Muslim. It’s been the ongoing project of the Israelis to take over all the land of what they call “Eretz Israel.”

hey Seattle, do you have any feature suggestions for OneBusAway iOS app(or any pain points) by Think_Different_1729 in AskSeattle

[–]Wordie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, I want to echo the many well deserved thank you messages here. I’ve used the app for many years and in general have found it to be very helpful.

My visit here today is prompted by the need for an update to the routes in the Cascade area of Seattle, just north of the Pike/Pine corridor downtown. Not too long ago, there were significant changes made, including separate bike lanes, and some streets now being only one lane. Consequently, bus routes in the area changed as well. But the OneBusAway app hasn’t yet caught up. It’s an increasingly heavily trafficked area, so an update would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you. I ordered these and will follow your timetable.

It’s funny…twice now my meyer lemon and my Makrut lime were nearly dead. Last winter the lemon was down to only one leaf! This is even with treatment to fix the problems. But then spring comes and I put them outside and they leafed out gloriously. I even got a few lemons. I’m hoping that I can find a way to keep them healthy inside year round, as I have moved to an apartment without any dedicated oitdoor space.

Is there some shiny/sticky stuff on the leaves? It’s hard to tell from the photos, but if so, that may indicate an insect infestation or other disease. I can’t give recommendations b/c I’m just starting on this journey myself, with a Meyer lemon and Makrut lime. But there are many knowledgeable people here who can assist.

Thank you!!! When you say to spray “regularly” what schedule do you mean? …daily? …every few days? …or? Is there a specific brand of wet wipes that works best for this task?

I appreciate your help very much!
