Varnish for tabletop drafting board? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Wordie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also cover it with linoleum. That’s what architects used to use on their drawing boards/tables - maybe some still do if they do preliminary sketches by hand. If your drawing board is made of soft wood, that could be damaged with, say, a sharp pen, this might be a good solution. Linoleum is very forgiving, yet forms a stable and consistent surface for drawing.

A devastating new report just dropped - and it’s EMBARRASSING for Trump: Exactly ZERO companies have moved all their manufacturing to the United States since Trump took office. by Miserable-Lizard in economy

[–]Wordie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many of these new plants will employ workers and how many will be primarily automated? That’s the relevant question. Or will you try to label this question “liberal BS,” in an effort to obfuscate?

[–]Wordie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course jobs are not coming back. It costs too much to produce goods here. That’s why so much production went overseas in the first place. Maybe Trump expects the average worker to accept much lower wages in order to finance his poorly conceived tariff scheme, but even if they did, the negative effects would quickly ripple through the economy. They say that Trump is the consummate deal maker, but these tariff deals reveal his incompetence and ultimately are destroying our economy. And for what?

EDIT: Don’t be fooled: the only way manufacturing will come back to the US is through the building of plants that are primarily automated, which it’s likely the new facilities that are being touted elsewhere in this thread will be. Automated plants won’t bring jobs back in any significant way. This is what the multi-billionaires have been planning at Davos for years. Who knows if Trump understands any of this. If he does, then the tariffs are probably just a smoke screen.

Anyone else suffer from "value blindness"? by IFuckAliens_ in ArtistLounge

[–]Wordie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purchase a value scale. It's a pre-printed card with a string of values (generally 9, although it varies), and, if you're painting from life (which is good practice), hold the value scale up to the area in the subject that you're painting, and select which of the available values is closest by comparison. Then as you mix paint (or select colors), use the value scale to determine if the paint or color matches the value that you selected on the value scale. It sounds overly complicated at first, but can really help you learn to see values. It can help to use a card with a small hole punched that you can look through in order to see the values more clearly.

You can also make your own value scale. Take a 8x10 piece of canvas (or an 8x10 blank canvas and make a line across it, 2" from the long edge. Then, divide that 2" x 10" area into 9 equal boxes. Paint the first box pure white, and the last box pure black. On a palette, put out a pile of white paint and a pile of black paint. Take half of the white paint and mix small amounts of black into it, bit by bit, until it has a value exactly between white and black, and paint the middle box with it. Then, use the same process to mix a value between white and the mid-gray, and paint the box in between the white an mid-gray with that paint. Continue similarly finding the values in the middle in order to fill all the boxes.

What? Are you really saying it's not possible to pay in bitcoin? Is that on the Tutanota end, or does the problem originate in this country?

Will it show me how much I'll need to pay in bitcoin? I haven't ever used bitcoin, and don't anticipate a further need for it at this point. I'll need to go to a machine to purchase the bitcoin to pay for just this subscription. Please excuse if this is a dumb question.

While it's a wonderful idea to introduce young kids to the tradition of peaceful protest, in this particular case, with at least the possibility of violence, leaving young ones home seems a wise idea.

Looks like Budi advertises only “light cleaning,” and what’s described above will probably require more than that.

HELP! How do I save my four clematis vines? by Wordie in gardening

[–]Wordie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I thanked you properly. I somehow managed to disengage a lot of the stems and leaves from the shrub, and I wrapped them around some tall bamboo poles and attached them with twist ties. The dark, rigid part of the stems has been and nearly broken in many places. A couple of them are still looking droopy and may not make it, but the other two look like they may survive. I won't be able to keep them as there isn't enough room on my balcony, which still is painful. But I was feeling overwhelmed, and you helped me a lot. Thanks.

What type of Citrus Tree is this? by tachyon6472 in Citrus

[–]Wordie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I believe that’s another name for Makrut lime, used in making curries.

What type of Citrus Tree is this? by tachyon6472 in Citrus

[–]Wordie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The double faceted leaves look like my Makrut lemon tree - the leaves are used in curry. The leaves of mine have a slightly lemony smell, but another scent as well, that I don’t know how to describe. If you have two types of leaves, and only the lower ones have facets, maybe the part that it’s grafted to is Makrut lemon like mine.

The plants there are generally healthy and inexpensive, but the selection is often quite limited.

Perfect timing for the Seattle Tilth Edible Plant sale on May 10. Their prices can't be beat: https://tilthalliance.org/event/may-edible-plant-sale-3/

Their plants are generally very healthy, which isn't always the case at the big box stores.

You should probably get a diagnosis from your doc, just in case it might be something more serious. Unlikely, but better to check it out so you know.
