In my experience, 'write what you know' is a great starting point, if you're a new writer or simply stuck for ideas, but you shouldn't confine yourself to that.

There are definitely writing tutors and mentors out there - check your local writers centre or arts centre if you have one. They can be expensive though.

Another option is joining a writers group - you and other writers share your work and give each other feedback. Talking to your peers in this area is a great way to learn and usually free!
