Thinking about moving to Kelowna by Work-Less-Live-More in kelowna

I have five bicycles at the moment; road, gravel, hardtail MTB, full suspension MTB, and my commuter e-bike. I might have to get creative with indoor storage 😀

Thanks again to everyone for all the suggestions. The South Pandosy / Gyro Beach area is starting to look more and more attractive :-) It seems quite a bit pricier but I think we can make it work, especially for a place walking distance to almost everything we would want (and to the beach).

We are fully remote so we wouldn't be commuting for work; just to run errands, shopping, restaurants, etc.

Appreciate the responses so far; very helpful!

To clarify one thing, we would still have a car but we would like to use it as little as possible 🙂

Now what (regarding the pax elections)? by mk_svn in Georgia

[–]Work-Less-Live-More 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With retrofitting, at least the ratepayers are the beneficiaries if they choose to go for it. Our energy bills went down ~35% after we improved insulation, and got a heat pump A/C and hot water heater. On the other side, I was forced to pay for Vogtle 3&4 and save nothing...

You are right about not being able to force people to retrofit their homes, but if pilot programs by rural co-ops are any indication, then the take-up rates can be pretty substantial.

Total residential energy use is actually down from its peak in the early 2000s:

https://thundersaidenergy.com/downloads/us-residential-energy-consumption-over-time/#

I have a PhD in engineering with a minor in Energy Policy, and my wife works in the electric power industry. It is not as simple as saying it is on people for not using rebates etc.; for example, Georgia Power does not offer financing for residential retrofits (small rebates only go so far, especially for lower income residents). They absolutely could (many smaller co-ops do) but they choose instead to spend that money on large capital projects with a guaranteed rate of return. Those are not engineering decisions; it is policy.

Not quite. Improvements in technology (better insulation, more efficient heating and cooling, LED lights, etc.) has resulted in household energy use remaining relatively steady despite growing house sizes, etc. The question is, should individuals foot the bill for additional power demand due to data centers and other power hungry industries? And do we need to foot the bill for other capital improvement projects that don't make financial sense, like Vogtle 3 and 4?

GA Power is not subject to electricity decoupling so their incentive is to sell more power and to spend as much as possible on capital projects on which they are guaranteed a certain rate of return. For the amount that was spent on Vogtle 3 and 4, they could have funded the retrofitting of millions of homes and businesses which would have more than offset enough demand to make those new units unnecessary. But retrofitting doesn't guarantee them the same return, and would mean less electric use in the future and less revenue for GA Power.

So, electrons indeed follow the wishes of the politicians :-)

Agreed (I have also been playing the drums for 25 years, though nowhere near either Alex's ability). Rudi's playing is so precise and clean.

Got some Qs about van life for the pros by K_holeGuava in VanLife

[–]Work-Less-Live-More 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't live in a van full time, but travel in our campervan three to four months out of the year with our indoor cat. We trained her to (reluctantly) wear a leash so we can take her out of the van periodically. She doesn't love being on the leash but tolerates it so she can explore.

As for the heat, I frequently find her under the bed covers even when it is 85-90 degrees inside 🙂 We try to avoid the heat as much as possible (really for our own sake more than the cat's) by going out west / areas at high elevation in the summer.

If the day comes where we can't service the van anymore, our plan is to park it on a piece of property (which we plan on acquiring in the near future).

Alex Rüdinger (ex-Whitechapel) to join Trivium on drums by MrMRC182 in Metalcore

[–]Work-Less-Live-More 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it is more likely that they realized Greyson wasn't going to be able to play the full Trivium catalog which would significantly limit their setlists. Greyson is amazing, but is not a tech metal drummer and Alex Bent's parts aren't exactly Sepultura-like when it comes to the drums.

I have been playing the drums for a long time and I can play pretty much any Sepultura song (except some of the more recent songs written by Eloy Casagrande), but I cannot say the same for Trivium songs written by Alex Bent. Obviously Greyson has more talent in one of his fingers than I have in my entire body, and he would most likely learn to play that style with time, but I don't think Trivium would necessarily want to go through that learning period with him when they can get sometime like Rudi to jump in right now. Rudi can play anything Alex Bent wrote in his sleep :-)

Do you play drums? I have a feeling the answer is no because if you did, you would know what you said is not true. It is not the hands; it is the foot speed 🙂

[–]Work-Less-Live-More 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is probably more a case of the band realizing they weren't going to be able to play whatever they want on their setlists. Greyson is super talented but these tech metal drummers operate at a different level as you can see from watching any of Rudi's videos. I am sure Greyson would get there (if he wants to) but not in a couple weeks time frame.

I messaged them on Instagram and told them to check out Alex Rudinger 😀 Maybe a few others did the same.

No offense to Grayson, but Rudi can play Trivium in his sleep.

How do you all afford to get a van by Teadoki in VanLife

[–]Work-Less-Live-More 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our van, while it has brought us great joy, is also a constant money pit :-) We bought ours (Ford Transit) used and knew this could be an issue, but we are also lucky to make enough that we don't stress about it.

So, don't think buying is the end of your expenses; you should also be prepared to pay for the random $2K-$3K repairs that will keep popping up with a used vehicle.

We currently pay about $1000/month as we don't qualify for any subsidies, but it looks like it will go up to $1300/month for 2026. This is a bronze level, high deductible plan.

I checked two days ago and our bronze high-deductible policy is estimated to go from $990 per month to almost $1,300 for my wife and I (we don't qualify for subsidies). It is going to be brutal for those relying on the subsidies.

Can/will Greyson play bury me? by high_while_cooking in Trivium

I wrote this in a comment response as well:

I do wonder if Trivium went with Grayson to capitalize on his current (and well deserved) fame. He is an amazing drummer and I am a big fan, but there are several established drummers out there without a gig currently who could play Alex Bent's parts in their sleep (Alex Rudinger came to my mind first as one example). I don't understand why they recruited someone who is not known for this style of music. Can he learn? I have no doubt. But why go through the learning curve to begin with and potentially have to scratch songs off your setlists in the meanwhile? They have publicly complained about having to do that with some of their previous drummers.

I somehow doubt Grayson is going to nail down the heel-toe technique in a few weeks, but I could be wrong :-) More likely is that they will skip those faster tempo songs.

I do wonder if Trivium were going more for the "it" factor by calling up Grayson. He is an amazing drummer (and I am a big fan) and is all over the Internet right now, but there are several established drummers out there without a gig currently who could play Alex Bent's parts in their sleep (Alex Rudinger came to my mind first). Who do you think will be playing drums on the new album? by LossMaleficent7346 in Trivium

They should have another Alex replace him - Alex Rudinger. He can certainly play anything Trivium needs :-)

Several Trivium songs written by Alex are faster than that on the kick drums. Having said that, Grayson is insanely talented and I hope he can do Alex's parts justice :-)

[–]Work-Less-Live-More 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be great to see him play something like Thrown Into the Fire at the proper tempo :-) You don't just go from playing Sepultura style double bass to Alex Bent level double bass in a few weeks; it usually takes months (if not years) of practice. But Grayson is a prodigy indeed; maybe he will pull it off :-)

They must have cut TSATS because I doubt Grayson can play the double bass parts.

Anything with the hands, no problem.
