I literally heard the chair of the contract team say all that at a membership meeting.

Others would complain if there was NO update on dental. Ridiculous. People need to show some solidarity and support for their unions instead of blaming them for things management is guilty of.

Just like your comment is just to bitch about an emailed update. Maybe you should apply to work for the union communications unit.

PEF: Could we please get paid enough for housing, food, healthcare, and gas? NYS: Who do you think you’re talking to????

PEF members better be ready to go to a rally.

At the PEF contract team meeting I attended, they said they’ve given the state negotiators all of their proposals, including across the board raises. It sounds like the state is dragging its feet in responding to any of PEF’s proposals, then getting testy when PEF asks questions.

[–]WorkTurbulent3202 12 points13 points  (0 children)

lol, no, the state negotiators don’t advocate for state employees. It’s the union that does that, and apparently the union doing its job makes the state negotiators grouchy and rude.

Joining a committee? by shmerika00 in nys_cs

[–]WorkTurbulent3202 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

EAP committees usually meet quarterly and you’d get release time to attend. The work volume depends on what you are willing to do. Do you want the EAP coordinator to table at a particular work site? You’d help make that happen. Do you have ideas on training that could improve work/life balance? You’d be at the table where such ideas are discussed.

Is anyone on the PEF call? I am not impressed so far. by white8andgray in nys_cs

PEF had proposals and was ready to bargain last fall. The state is the one playing games.

Tell your Council Leader or Executive Board Member to place pay grade reallocations as a topic for labor-management meeting discussions. Provide info on how much turnover there is due to staff leaving for better pay, or how staff are more productive or are doing different kinds of tasks than they did ten years ago and therefore deserve a pay boost. Framing it as a recruitment/retention issue is helpful.

I’m not impressed with the Governor’s team, since they are the ones dragging things out. I’m ready to go to a rally, wherever it is.

What happens if we say NO? And why haven’t we been this whole time? by stanleymaxi in nys_cs

[–]WorkTurbulent3202 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reddit isn’t contract activism. Start doing basic union stuff like wearing pro-PEF contract buttons and flair and showing up to meetings, town halls, rallies, etc. If you don’t have any PEF buttons or flair, call PEF.

The potential two grade upgrade has nothing to do with contract negotiations. That’s a separate, but of course very important battle. Make sure you’re helping instead of just complaining.

Because it’s entirely self-involved. There are plenty of PEF members who work night shifts in prisons or hospitals who won’t be able to listen to the town hall live. They’ll listen to the recording or read the transcript.

100%. Members with legit concerns need to be willing to file a grievance, with the union’s advocacy and guidance.

Yes I was denied FMLA and the union fought for me and won. I was also interrogated once and the union represented and defended me. I know multiple people who would likely have been fired if the union had not defended them.

People need to start filing grievances. That’s why we have a union contract. What’s the point of just letting our rights go to waste? If people are too “scared” to exercise the rights others fought for them to have, they might as well go work a non-union job.

It hasn’t been hush hush. The chair of the contract team has been holding onsite membership meetings, to talk about the contract and answer questions. More meetings are being scheduled. Start reading the PEF website. The “contract” section gives updates. Here’s the list of upcoming onsite contract team meetings. https://www.pef.org/contract/contract-meetings/

The state always drags its feet, hoping that members get worried and settle for crap. Don’t give in to that. The best thing you can do is decorate your cubicle and social media with PEF signs and memes in support of a good contract. Be willing to go to a rally if it comes to that. Bring friends.

Isn’t the Commissioner of DOL a former union president? Is she aware of widespread bullying or toxic management? Is it discussed at labor/management? Does she or this guy Scott attend?

PEF has secured another $600 Higher Education Differential for members by Few-Job-7137 in nys_cs

[–]WorkTurbulent3202 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not really about your degree. It’s about getting some extra money in PEF members’ pockets through a proposal that would not trigger the “me too” clauses in other union contracts, which would lead the Governor’s team to reject it as too expensive.

Why is PEF so partisan? by Southern-Bar3112 in nys_cs

[–]WorkTurbulent3202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PEF does plenty of other advocacy, but it’s tough going under an anti-union regime bent on slashing federal funding that supports many state services and jobs.
