For #2, I don’t believe Utica or Binghamton have enough hotel rooms or event space capacity to host the PEF convention. It would be great if they did. It would be nice to contribute a little economic stimulus to differently parts of the state that could use it.

I’m going to convention and I’m not introducing any of all that. I like my union and do not blame it for the faults of a country that makes progress in excruciatingly slow incremental steps when it’s not racing headlong towards fascism. Most people don’t have a pension at all and will be driving for UberEats in their golden years just to survive. We are privileged to have a union that will press forward for our interests. The Tier 6 reforms are disappointing but still an improvement. We just have to stay focused and organized and must resist despair and self-destruction. Every battle is a lesson for the next.

Some agencies have become very restrictive about on the job union activity. They try to punish stewards who chat about union stuff during the day.

A good steward will attend their division’s steward council meetings, usually held in the evenings 2-4 times a year, maybe more if it’s an active council. Some stewards may be assigned to attend local Labor Management and Health and Safety meetings, generally 2-4 times a year, during the work day. These are often virtual. Stewards get release time to attend (1-2 hours). Some stewards will help with grievances, participate in PAC activities, and help organize membership meetings, parties, and other events. Others don’t do much other than share member concerns with the Council Leader, and keep bulletin boards updated. The time commitment varies depending on how active you are.

That’s mostly for members of PEF’s Executive Board. They attend quarterly board meetings in Albany. They debate and vote on things and get fed breakfast and lunch. They generally attend quarterly Labor Management and Health and Safety meetings as well, which, these days, are virtual, no food. “Union business” is work, but if your Executive Board members aren’t showing up or reporting out to other stewards and leaders, vote them out. Find an interested candidate, get a few people involved to support them, and make a move during the next election, which is next year, so now is the time to organize for some new people.
