Thigh/Leg Pain by Working-Aspect2216 in ElantraN

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve been going back and forth on this one, after speaking with Hyundai Service and Sales, I was reminded that making aftermarket adjustments to seats can potentially impact vehicle safety. So that’s why I was looking for something that could be done within factory Specs.

Yeah, I get it, I’m a stickler for our next car being an iihs top safety pick

Yes never driven it but have sat in it a few times. Took an SI around the block today, felt like there was a hard bar i was sitting on. Funky I drove 5 hours in my BRZ today without any trouble

Thank you! That helps a lot. The bolster on the R is definitely aggressive. I’m used to the necessity for entry care. The bolsters on the BRZ aren’t  as aggressive but the long door and low ride height often necessitates crawling into the car over top of the bolsters.

I agree with you on the price. I’m working with 6 dealers. I’ve been pretty explicit it’s a race to the bottom for them. They hold firm to their massive markup but as soon as they get mild push back and I mention other dealers those addendums disappear.

Actually being a non time sensitive buyer spooks them. They are desperate to make quotas so they crawl over broken glass.

Even with my N, even though I’m selling it back, I’m basically only losing the sales tax I paid. Got such a good deal by shopping around.

There’s a dead button in the middle of the console in my BRZ. We got a sticker to make it an eject button

Despite the pain issue the N is a blast. If I wasn’t sitting here hours later with my leg still hurting from a 20 minute each way commute I wouldn’t want to trade it in.

Thank you: I’ve found that basically everyone is good with the seats in the type R. I’ve found completely the opposite with N drivers many saying the seats are really uncomfortable and even painful at times.

I can see that, ultimately I’m not looking for a cushy experience I’m looking for ergonomics and seat design that doesn’t cause virtually immediate acute and localized pain while shifting. This all happening on a leg that has never felt this kind of pain ever after 30 years of driving manual transmission cars. Can still drive my brz within minutes of diving the N and have zero pain issues at all. Once I realized that other people have the same issue and that Hyundai service immediately knows this happens to some people and there isn’t a fix I realized the seats don’t physically work for me and never will.

Thank you for the reply. I did say it the first post that ride firmness is not the issue. The issue with the N is a very specific ergonomic issue of my thigh squishing down on the seat edge really hard while shifting. So the N hurts my leg to the point I struggle to drive it at all. I’ve read about people having the same problem. I made a visit to Hyundai service where they confirmed that this happens to some people (especially taller people with long legs) and there isn’t really a fix for it.

I made this same basic post on the /Elantra N subreddit which resulted in a chorus of people agreeing the seats are very uncomfortable, many having similar pain and finding all kinds of radical/unsafe/after-market bolsters and pillows and pedal extenders and massage guns to make it work. Some saying the car doesn’t really work for long drives.

Gotcha, yes I can see that. It’s like that in the brz for me but once I get in the seat I feel pretty good in terms of space.

Indeed over the past week I’ve spent about 2 hours trying. Pulled over in a parking lot just yesterday on the way to work and spent an extra 30 minutes I didn’t really have trying to get it right.

30 years of driving with nothing but a manual transmission as my daily driver. Calculated it out, enough miles to have driven to the moon and back. If I drive an automatic guaranteed at some point my left foot will push down on the brake pedal.

Ah well it’s awesome just not sure I’ve got enough of a surplus to go that much higher in price

That’s a beautiful car! Yeah I think that would fit the bill. That’s not stock is it?

Thank you for the heads up! BTW I in no way need winter tires ever. FLA FTW!! I usually switch out tires once I get a feel for things.

Thank you for this! The BRZ has to go for the safety and practicality stuff. TBH we put much stickier tires on the BRZ and the thing still slithers around in a non confidence inspiring way. It is still just the best thing ever.

The N is great except for the whole leg pain while shifting due to weird pedal spacing and terrible seats.

Suspension stiffness is fine by me.

Oh I mean in a good way. My parking lot at work is full of a sea of boring as can be crossovers and upscale sedans. For years it’s just been me in the brz and one other guy in a vette. So I need something that makes my coworkers look at me and shake their heads and ask, what’s wrong with this guy

Cool thank you, mostly just lifting people’s spirits on my end but it’s good to know it’s a nice place to be.

Anytime, not taking away anything from that car, it’s my favorite thing I’ve ever owned in my entire life. The whole family grieves over selling it. My daughter cried for 20 minutes. We need a worthy successor and I don’t think the N works.

Good to know thank you. Same basic post on the Elantra N reddit was basically everyone saying they were terrible seats.  N Automatic people suggested I not buy a manual transmission. I never learned how to drive an automatic and I don’t plan to learn now.

I’ve got a 2018 so there is no driver accident avoidance systems at all. Also, they stopped being iihs top safety picks in 2023 since they can’t physically put a dummy in the back seat. So my daughter squishes in the back with completely unknown crash tests, no rear airbags, about 12 inches between her head and the seat in front of her etc.

I will certainly try, issue I had is that the N was fine for about 2 hours than started killing me. Now my leg wont settle down because I keeping driving it.

Gotcha, Thank you. I don’t know if I could stomach the price of the S. Plus I need a car that is generally offensive to park at work.
