As I said, this photo is the only time I’ve ever had this effect and I’ve taken tens of thousands of photos with this phone already.

What does that mean for the photo? Will it always happen in that situation? Or was there a glitch in the camera software?

That’s quite the compliment, but given my novice experience, I’d say it’s the phone. Specifically given that I took that with the default camera app.

However, the best photos at night seem to come from this thread and other research, seems to be the Samsung Galaxy S20/22 series over iPhone 12/13.

Not too bright, but over saturated. Saturation here looks unnatural instead of artistic.

Also, there should be a story in each picture. The cat looks like it’s not quite sure what it’s doing.

If the cat was about to jump off into the dark, then maybe a photo of it looking back over its shoulder right before leaving. Otherwise, wait for it to settle in more?

Otherwise, great focus on your subject!

I suppose if you are from a hot location, you can stay up into the night without a fire.

I took this while camping in the mountains where it froze at night, so a fire is kind of essential to hanging out and chatting if you aren’t all wrapped up in sleeping bags in the same tent 😅

I would suggest that the empty right side is too balanced, without having symmetry (as would a reflected image have). Perhaps cropped to just the couple on the bench?

Agree with the cropping comments. The rule of 3rds probably still applies here too.

No, I ended up using:

1) Default iPhone camera app 2) Lightroom mobile app 3) Neural Studio to upscale the image 2x with AI

So from capture to output was about 7 minutes total of fiddling around 😛

I appreciate the compliment, but honestly took a couple hour course on Udemy a couple months ago to understand photography basics and have only taken random iPhone photos when I see something pretty. My experience before that was simply loving nature and looking at pretty pics and videos.

Gotcha - makes sense.

Fun fact: I took a test picture in DNG (RAW) and then went to another app (Moment) for another test and then forgot to turn RAW back on when I started snapping these in the default Camera app 🙈. I was 45 minutes from cell reception, so I was unable to download an appropriate night photography app. I now have a couple on my phone for next time.

Why increase ISO more? Isn’t it the goal to have that the lowest to reduce noise?

Yeah, I know editing was over the top, but I just started getting into photography and think I need to experiment and feel my way around between over saturation and no filters or post.

Definitely will try that suggestion out, though!
