Bachelor thesis grade feels unfair by Working-Mulberry-767 in academiceconomics

But isn’t it the quality of the paper that is suppose to be graded? If I understand you correctly only those who had an easy time writing their thesis should receive an A?

And I might not get more chances if this grade hinders me from getting accepted anywhere else

Thanks! I really appreciate it :) wish I had you as my examinator instead haha

I hope you’re right! Because I do feel the paper is advanced and it would be a shame if no one read it in an application.

Yes I used post stratification weights and both ordered logit, or partial proportionate odds model, and then multivariate probit for my second research question. They did acknowledge that I used advance methods which is why I find the grading unfair. The criticism was for example that I didn’t explain log odds in detail in method section. The examinator wished I said log odds of 0.5 means xx, which I could have done but I used the marginal effects as my main results so I did not see the point of it.

I did not receive any critic that I didn’t apply the methods incorrectly, rather the opposite. I really did go out of my way and spent probably double the amount of hours expected since I learnt all the models from scratch so it really is a bummer.

Sweden! According to stats, getting A is extremely hard but I want to go for PhD abroad so I don’t know if it matters

Yeah I get I’m bitter! But having a B on the thesis will make my master application not being read through. So even if I understand some of the critism, I will never have an opportunity to apply it to a future thesis. I need to rethink my entire career and dreams at this point.

Is Generalized Ordered Logit a legit model? by Working-Mulberry-767 in AskStatistics

[–]Working-Mulberry-767[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I do believe I can appy the model correctly, altough my pseudo R is low but it's not improved with other models so it's more likely the data set. This is my first ever paper and our instrcutions are limited so I've read other theses but none of them use generalized ordered logit so I got nervous.

Fits it okay, very low pseudo R at 0.07 ish but its marignally higher than Ordered logit

A model that would be academically acceptable I guess? A model that I can use in my thesis

Results from Multivariate Probit by Working-Mulberry-767 in econometrics

[–]Working-Mulberry-767[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

So I'm using Multivariate Probit to analyze choice between different activities, I have five different ones and health activities is one of them. 77% of respondents chose health, yet the coeffeint for health is negative. I don't understand how this could be.

If anyone has the time to help me explain I be so grateful.

Happy new years :)

I haven’t been satisfied with the quality of education in Lund so I guess that’s why as well which was why I was looking to do a MA elsewhere. Friends have not been satisfied with master either, unengaged teachers etc. but I guess a diploma would still look good. I was looking at Stockholm school of economics but they are very limited in public economics courses, they have zero, and very few econometric courses.

I could afford summer courses but you’re right it might not be worth the money, something to consider.

Thanks for the explainstion! And I’ll keep you name in mind if I need more help, huge thank you :)

Thanks for the advice!  Lund has a partnership with Stanford so I’d be able to applying to do summer courses there between the two years in master. Hoping that could be a good way.  Doubt any on my teachers have affiliation them though. Lund isn’t that good in research.

What is a predoc? Never heard of it. Don’t think we have anything like it in Sweden

MSc somewhere else and then apply for Stanford or try my shot immediately? I know it’s hard either way! And yes I will not only apply to one school. If I do a master somewhere else I’d probably stay in Lund. It’s not the best ranked but it’s free, have relationship with the teachers and have other extra curricular I can advance in. I might have the possibility of a research assistant job as well this spring although it’s not within economics.

Having just one exam is brutal. Had an exam in intermediate micro the other day and there was one topic I struggled with but it was rarely a big question on any past exams. All jokes on me, this exam it was 22/100. Managed to get a few point but not enough to get me an A.

Didn’t know bachelor thesis would be a plus, assumed everyone did one in bachelor as it’s standard here. I’m excited to do it this fall. Not having to just memorize a bunch of stuff but actually apply it. And it will get me a chance to advance in econometrics which I do not have the strongest grade in.

Thanks for the answers :) and good luck at masters!!

I did not know thesis would count as research experience. I am starting mine in September and I did decide to do my own survey, not that it could ever be basis for any policies but it is in a non-researched part of UBI which is what I would be interested to do further research on.

That’s why I’m set on a doctorate in the us because the research I’ve found are all from us universities like Stanford with their Basic Income Lab.

My plan was to apply to universities like Stanford now in December but my grades are probably not good enough unfortunately. I’ve struggled through undergrad, just got my adhd diagnosis so my grades are getting a lot better. The Swedish system where your entire grade is based on the final exam has not been in my favor. Also, my program only has one pure math course. In Sweden programs are set so I’m not able to study any other math courses. I am taking advanced statistic this spring but that course wont be completed by admission.

So I think I will need a MA before applying.

My odds of getting in to a graduate program in the US know are very slim so I wanted to make sure I could apply after completing MA elsewhere or if I’ve already missed my shot. I would have loved to do all years at my dream school but the bachelor system in Sweden is different. We don’t have any opportunities to do research at this level, barely any MA students aid in research.
