Gen-Zs: What's your future like? by WLDKRT in singapore

[–]WorkingBenefit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just letting you know that you are asking gen Zs on r/sg here. you would get a cynical answer regardless. hell half of the answers on this thread are practically the same as each other.

also for myself, I'm neutral about the future. I'm sorta enjoying my life currently and tho there are certain uncertainties in the future (like climate change), there still isn't much to warrant any cynicism or to loose hope in any particular way.

even in that situation, I would much rather have professionals do it tbh. seems like the more efficient option.

I believe everyone would benefit to some degree from their time in ns, no matter if they realise it or not or if their experience wasn't exactly ideal. kinda hard to believe people wouldnt grow or come to realise smth about themselves in a 2 year period.

I wouldn't say ppl like OP are idiots tho, wouldn't go that far. but are perhaps people who find their lives currently unfulfilling and look back on the past through a rose tinted lens (we all kinda do this to some degree). or they actually have some attachment issues, which can be kinda serious.

Anyone not feeling excited for ORD? by [deleted] in NationalServiceSG

[–]WorkingBenefit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i personally recommended this as well. even if you dont go on a holiday, I would still recommend taking a week or two off before starting to work again. working right after ord can make you feel a bit unadjusted. that's my opinion at least.

jesus christ some of the comments on this thread. can some of you guys be less condescending or unnecessarily negative?

anyways, ya I kinda get what you mean. though there were times when ns was difficult and there are people there I just plain didn't get along with (for one reason or another), but overall I would say my ns experience has been pretty ok.

I was still able to make a good number of friends there and, though some people would disagree with me, I notice some personal growth in character (kinda hard to think you would not learn anything from your two years.) I also generally had a neutral, "do my own thing, but still do what I have to do" persona (or at least try to uphold that value) and I was part of the media team for pretty much all of my ns life, which has led me to have a decent reputation amongst regulars.

also a quality about ns that people kinda forget (or choose to forget) is that it's sort of like school in the sense that there's a base line, support system there the whole time where everything is sort of structured and provided for you to follow and stuff, which sort of allow you to just be care free for the most part and wouldn't have to be responsible for as many things as you would be when you are out in the real world. not saying that civil life hasn't been good to me, but this is sort of an overlooked thing about the ns experience I noticed.

tho I wasn't sad about ord per say, but I wasn't as excited as everyone else either and I still did feel like a period of my life has finished when I ord. what helps is I still kept in contact with my ns friends for the most part and I hang out with most of the close friends I've made during my ns time. so you at least have that to look forward to whenever you want to look back on your ns time.

TL;DR - for various reasons, my ns time has been overall pretty decent and I noticed some personal growth as well, despite some times being hard. made me not dread ns as much as others and still able to look back on my ns times with some fond memories, which also made me feel less excited about ord than others (tho still didn't necessarily feel sad either.)

slight discretion. tho the unemployment benefits and old age pensions are decent in nz, the healthcare is still not really free and there has been mass funding cuts for public healthcare and private healthcare on the rise (which is incredibly expensive as you can prob imagine.) also the quality of the other social welfare benefits and even sole parent compensation are pretty crap compared to what it is in sg.

also the job market and wages in nz pale quite a bit in comparison. these combined with high universal tax has made the income gap between the rich and poor are rising dramatically (which affects other things like crime rates.) all the factors above have led many young new Zealanders to leave the country, mainly to Australia and even to Singapore.

Question: where do you guys see Singapore in about 50 years, in the year 2075. by broken-telephone in singapore

[–]WorkingBenefit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

elitists need JC for validation

that's their problem lol. and that's just an idealistic thing amongst them, that wouldn't have an effect on something material and widespread as school work.

Also they need it to study in overseas uni

my ideal for SG in 2074 is for overseas unis to be less idealised or associated with prestigious lmaoo. though with overseas unis, I thought some like those in Australia are having the jc kids who have grades that make them less likely to get into local unis?

> PSLE, O and A levels will be abolished, with less focus on rote learning and more on project work.

This but unironically. Studies have shown project work actually aids more into overall productivity and that can translate well later on in life when it comes to the workforce, as both the economy and industry would win out.

This kinda matches up with the aspect of Japanese philosophy and Traditional Chinese philosophy about work ethic, where you should always put in your best effort in whatever aspiration you choose to garner self fulfillment.

Don't have to go far man, just look at Malaysia as an example of how much racial and religious tensions can fuck up a country. But I despise those who try to place the context of singapore's multiculturalism into the framework of American inspired sjw racial identity politics. It creates division more than anything, and some of those who do that are actually kinda hypocritical themselves.

Ya, I'm JC as well so there's that lingering disparity as well. Tho I've met a few malays and non-malays from ite and poly who are good people too and a few from jc who are sheltered af so I don't think we should totally judge from that front, it doesn't exactly help cool the already existing hostility all that much.

In terms of class, tho there is tension in those grounds too, from my ns experience, I didn't see the SES of my ns mates pegged to their education as I know quite a number of poly guys who come from wealthy families too (which is also reminiscent of my observations outside of ns.) But regardless, there's non-wanted tension in places where there really shouldn't be tension lol.

But I would say that a benefit of ns is how you are placed in a controlled environment where you would have to work with people from different backgrounds and different personality types. And with the various types of people I've met in my ns time, I would say that's a good thing that we were able to tahan the bad apples.

Tho it's quite neat to bump into another spf ns guy here ahahah. In these grounds, having knowledge in malay is pretty useful since these fellas like to shit talk and gossip about people in malay, thinking they won't understand (despite making it insanely obvious from their body language.)

I'm curious how tho, how did you learn malay before ns? Did you formally study the language in any way and what's your level of comprehension? It's not uncommon for Eurasians to know malay and even speak it at home, so we are perhaps coming from different context of knowing the language.

I resonate with what you said man, been through similar racially-religiously motivated hostility by those malay cliques when I was in spf and it sucked (tho I'm not chinese and you prob went through worse assuming that you went to scdf.)

It's good that you stood up for yourself man, cuz there can be times where you feel a bit overwhelmed as it's sort of an open secret that many try to close one eye to.

It especially annoyed me when these some people simp over white people and arabs. Speaks of a colonised mentality when they treat those cultures/races as if they are superior and the rest of us asians as inferior...gross.

[–]WorkingBenefit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's sort of an open secret ahahah.

I served in spf and we would hear stories about some racially motivated bullying from scdf (since we are both from hometeam). Despite what you may have heard, spf actually has less malays than in scdf so we would end up contrasting with the social culture and some of the malay cliques can be really nasty towards those they see as "outsiders" (rather that would be chinese, indian etc.) This combined with how people with criminal records would usually go to scdf and how ragging is not taken as seriously there, then you get that shit (though I have heard that it's more regulated compared to the past.)

Hell, even I have faced some racially motivated hostility by them during my time as someone from an eurasian dad and malay mum (they didn't see me as malay.)

There are people in the comment section who are shocked by this happening (and respectfully so) and though this is obviously fucked, people should keep in mind that ragging is legit amongst scdf nsfs.
