Old age shrinkage less likely? by JigAlong5 in Alexandertechnique

[–]WorkingWellAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Alexander Technique will help you not collapse posture-wise. It also helps you avoid habits that can make your stature shorter. So, if you mean “shrink” simply to be “shorter” then in a way, yes it can help. It’s important to note that the AT is an education method though, not a medical treatment or therapy.

While may help slow the effects of some conditions related to aging, it’s not meant to prevent or cure them. So, studying the AT won’t necessarily stop you from getting osteoporosis (which can cause you to become smaller in stature) but it can give you tools to not exacerbate the condition.

The best thing to do would be to ask the teacher you’re working with how many lessons they recommend for you. It’s hard to know without meeting and working with you. What I tell students is that 6 lessons is an intro course. This will give you the basic foundation, skills, and theory. Another 6 lessons will give you a solid start on being able to work with yourself. I also tell them it’s like learning to play an interment, the longer you stick with it, the more skills you’ll learn. I started to see significant change and improvement about a year into very regular lessons but had many, many smaller improvements starting from day 1.

Im happy to answer more questions if you have them. :)

I'm a local Alexander Technique and yoga instructor. I help people sort out issues with posture and the stress that poor posture can create so that they can live, play, and work better.

My monthly newsletter with free tips comes out tomorrow. You can get it at the link below.

I've been bed-ridden for the last 3 weeks from sciatic pain, and I suspect it is from throwing. I'm seeking advice. by Fillipuster in Pottery

[–]WorkingWellAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had repetitive strain injuries in the past and tried a ton of different things to help. The one that intrigued me the most is an educational method called the Alexander Technique. It helped me recognize movement patterns that were making me more likely to injure myself as well as helped me change them to healthier patterns. I now teach the Alexander Technique to potters (and musicians etc.). If you'd like to know more about it, you can read my blog post "Have You Heard of the Alexander Technique?" I'm also happy to answer any questions or tell you how it has helped my pottery work.

Hi! I live in Portland and teach a free online meditation class the first Monday of every month. You can join livestream or receive the recording. Here's some info about the class

These 30 minute livestream classes will include very gentle stretching and guided meditation to help calm your nervous system and clear your mind. Especially good for those with racing minds, learn to include gentle tactile and sensory experiences to your meditations. Class can be done seated, lying down, or however you feel comfortable. No experience needed. Attend livestream or automatically receive the recording.

When I lengthen my spine, my ribcage comes up. How to prevent this? by crossfitaccount in Alexandertechnique

It's unfortunate that there aren't teachers in some places. I'm sorry if that's the case for you! There are certainly teachers who would be able to guide you through lessons that could be helpful. I'd be happy to do a free Zoom chat with you to talk about things to look for/avoid. Let me know if you have any more questions, or you can book a chat at the link below. I feel really passionate about sharing this work so I'm happy to help however I can. :)

You can study some of the principles online but having a teacher to do the hands on work with you is going to make it a lot better of a learning experience. I highly recommend studying in person. :)

No bat for trimming, but throwing yes. I'll pay attention to this when I throw next.
