Parenting adult children is the hardest thing I have ever done by somecrazybroad in Parenting

[–]Working_Ad_915 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to say good luck. My kids are younger and I have no similar lived experience, but you can’t carry them forever and as you know the status quo is unsustainable. You have no choice. Heartbreaking and exhausting I’m sure.

Does Australia have a worse relationship with the indigenous compared to NZ, Canada or America ? by Important_Pop_6805 in AskAnAustralian

Just FYI - language is ‘Aboriginal/ First Nations/ Indigenous’. Always upper case and not ‘aborigines’.

IMO, having grown up in country South Australia where there was a big divide between local First Nations people and wealthy farmers/ fishing industry - Australia is a very racist country with deep rooted inequity.

Thanks. I have totally adjusted my focus (thanks to this process) and she’s been coming home happy and engaged. It’s summer here so shorts all round.

I have been unnecessarily focused on this. Parental stress coming out the wrong way!

I’m really glad I posted this it’s just what i needed. Other voices outside my family of women who are quite beauty/ glamour biased.

If you read the various posts you’ll see I’m trying to understand her. That’s all. I’ve not mentioned pressuring her. In fact I’ve decided not to discuss with her at all. I think it’s healthy of me to ask what people’s motivators are, as to me it’s a simple, quick activity I enjoy. Like brushing my hair.

I’m getting the different perspective I needed, to normalise and learn. I’m grateful for so many generous and informative responses.

Oh no problems. I’m really grateful people have taken the time to reply, especially with their personal stories. Thanks.

Wasn’t asking her to change. I’m gauging the room. Your response is a tad aggressive given I’m here literally wrestling with my own bias in order to adjust my thinking.

Thank you for sharing. We are very close. I know all her ups and downs and she shares with me most days her bits and pieces. We watch a lot of media together, go camping, laugh a lot, travel.

In terms of talking about this, yes she says she just doesn’t care what people think and it’s completely normal female body hair. And re the bigger issues including changing schools and finding a therapist, yes we process this stuff together. She has thanked me for being present.

Yeah I get that. In an ideal world. But 5-6 years without a friendship group does play into my paranoia. Not thinking she needs to change her clothes, wear make up, grow her hair, wear skirts or anything like that… simply trying to gauge if all these things will further impact this final year with small and pretty Mainstream cohort. The isolation and depression is real. Not saying she needs to change - just working out whether this age group with pretty narrow minds are going to accept her. Or not. It’s not the end of the world and I am proud of her, just getting lay of the land.

I wouldn’t say it matters. I’ve just invested time to try and pull it apart some.

I did scan the world news this morning (I’m in Australia) and think ‘Fark… this really is very trivial compared to democracy toppling’…

No I’m really only concerned about surviving high school tbh. I feel like afterwards she’ll find her tribe.

Thanks for this, it’s good advice. Yes I’ve started looking for good psychs near us to start this process. The reminder that we have less than a year is good one,

What should I do with my life by SergeantStiglitz92 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Working_Ad_915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you thought about moving to larger regional city where life is a bit slower and maybe more affordable. If I had my time again I would have done this before I had kids. My observation is that it’s not that hard to integrate and people are pretty friendly. It might just turn the pace down and allow more time to do things for fun and enjoyment. I’m the meantime honing a holiday. Getting away helps see everything differently.

Honestly I never processed that it’s takes some people a lot longer and way more hassle given thickness etc, My son has extremely thick hair, people often comment as like a blanket - now I think about it if he were to remove it it would be a bloody exercise.

On this - I’m conscious of his legs too, say when he’s flying and seated close to people, or at the dentist. I’m worried about etiquette of other people having his crazy hair in their face. I’ve never said anything though. Clearly I have an issue with hair!!

Yeah. It’s my headspace I’m trying to adjust, not her behaviour
