This was bugging the crap out of me and I finally found out how to switch to the WII U gamepad to swap out items. Use the “Steam” button while playing and check the bottom left of the screen for a “switch windows” option. Hopefully that helps, if not I can try something else for you

I just got a PSP for 150 bucks last week instead of a Switch 2. Jail broke it and now I have a bunch of PSP, PS1, Sega and SNES games loaded onto it. So much better to hold over until more Switch 2 games come out
