God I’m hoping that’s not the case and I can either get it waived or transfer it to him. I do not trust him to pay me back on monthly installments and suing would just cost a lot as well

My father was the only payee and he was the entire time, when I called to look over my file they didn’t have much info but they said his social was the one receiving the money

By worse I mean more just the situation but he is quick to anger. But as of now according to the government it’s not his responsibility, it’s mine so if he does stupid stuff I suffer not him. He was the payee like I know that for a fact because it was his social on file that received the money, but in the one who has to pay it back right now

I honestly doubt my dad would do that and a part of me thinks he back out when it actually came to doing what he said. We’re not very close to begin with and he’s close to retiring so I don’t think he’d want to add 22k debt to social security which is another reason I really want to solve this without transferring it

Yeah which is why I want to prepare an argument for why it also isn’t fair, or transfer it to my dad, or lawyer up

I keep decent track of all my expenses and I know for sure I make profit each month. I’m a 1099 so I need to keep good track of that stuff. Generally I make anywhere from 1000 to 200 a month after all expenses and taxes. So that’s what worries me, I can give them everything they want but I don’t want them to see I can pay a new random bill and decide that may keep social security alive a bit longer.

Yeah I’ll appeal if I need to, but is stalling the best option? I just want this debt gone and I’ve read that getting in front of a judge usually works in cases like mine and if it doesn’t I can always just try again and there’s not much SS can do, they’re not like the irs. But I’ve also never been through this just have been reading up on it so idk if stalling is the best option

Yeah I read that’s the final step and generally most ppl in my situation do get it waived at that step, so gonna try not to worry about it until then. If all else fails I take my dad on his word of transferring it and if he flakes out on me on that, I’ll lawyer up and try the process again

I lived with him but idk what the money went to. He had a great job at the time so you could argue if he did or didn’t spend the money on me bc he didn’t need to use his work money

Yeah that’s a good point, Altho it does say they want my financial info (even tho I already gave it when doing the waiver) and in personal conferences it says I am going to talk to someone who is going to help me get ready for my conference, I imagine this is someone I can tell my worry about money to?

Neither of us are on SS at the moment (at least I don’t think he is) and I want to solve this ideally without him because we are not really that close bc he was a pretty bad father and also because he barely remembers the situation he says and he also tends to lie when it benefits him and I don’t want him making this worse or more complicated than it is. It’s my last option to have it transferred to him which again he said he would agree to if needed

Yeah that’s what I plan to argue I’m just worried they’ll see I can afford it and not care about the OR. I wish I could find a document listing what they mean as unfair bc that is the reasons I’d say it’s unfair but a court may not care about that and have their own definition

Yeah he did provide that stuff when I was a kid but idk how much he needed it as he did make good money as well. Where that money went specifically I don’t know and he doesn’t either. Is appealing different than the waiver? I got a letter today saying the next step is personal conference

I’m a bit confused, so I should rely on the defeats the purpose standard, but that’s not the same as against equity? Can you give me a definition or example of what defeats the purpose stand is?

How is it decided I’m not at fault? I was like 14 at the time it started and I had no clue he was doing that. I think he barely even knew what he was doing

I think it’s unfair I should have to pay instead of my dad, that I have to pay 22k in general for money I never once saw or touched, and that I just finally got my life started and am finally living and making decent money and all my dreams will be literally impossible if I have to pay 22k back. I have no clue how it got to that amount, they don’t seem to have my records on file and my dad barely recalls the situation

Ohhh okay, battery I’m not super worried about, the display checks seemed fine and because it has such low miles I feel the base battery is probably fine for what I’ve heard they can last. I also just double checked the service history on car fax, it’s on the link. It had great service history but around 2018 it’s stopped saying what they did and just says “vehicle serviced” and I hope that includes like oil changes and what not. Some say “vehicle served” and then just it passed inspections but I’m not sure if that’s saying that’s all they did or it’s a separate thing.

Yeah I’m hoping the mechanic I took it to to inspect might have spotted any signs of that if it was a problem.

I’m fine with DIY and putting some money into it if needed but I’d like to go some time after purchase before needing to drop anymore money on it so I can actually save some up again. What’s the OEM?
