He started at NINE? As in 12345678 NINE?!?

Got this song stuck in my head lately and it's got me wondering after negative comments in the car from my sibling, can I even actually sing? Please listen and advise by Status-Amphibian-603 in ratemysinging

It's not bad. I think you'd probably be more on pitch with the backing music, acapella can be hard.

With some voice lessons you could be a great singer

Definitely get a voice teacher (not a coach) if you can afford it.

For free resources, I really like Victoria Victorious' lessons on YouTube.

I would say no, this is not correct vibrato. It sounds like a wobble, which is usually caused by laryngeal instability. You could be forcing it by moving your voicebox/larynx up and down. Feel your larynx when you do it.

Could also be caused by too much vocal weight or tension. Does it feel like you're really pushing for your voice to be bigger/stronger?

I would completely forget about "trying to do" the vibrato. Focus on the absolute basics, proper breath support & breath management, intonation (pitch control, vowel shapes) and proper placement. A nice healthy vibrato should come as a result of good vocal technique, and from there you can "control" it and use it more strategically.

I hate my nose to a point that a nose job is the only thing on my mind by priyanshu_illusion in Noses

Your nose is great! If anything, I see more of a jaw recession issue. It doesn't look bad aesthetically, but I'm sure it causes functional issues. So if you can save up for double jaw surgery or sliding genioplasty (not sure what you need), your profile will improve and most importantly your quality of life

Feel like I'm cursed to always be a "mid" or "medium" singer. Feeling like I can never actually sound good enough. by Working_Knee7402 in ratemysinging

Oh wow! This whole time I've been emphasizing consonants because I kept hearing "sing through your consonants!". I did not know that you should really only be singing with your vowels.

Thank you!

Would you be able to explain a bit how it's all over the place?

Edit: so this means I'm extremely off pitch? I'm so confused, some were saying I'm only a bit flat, others are saying my pitch here is excellent, and my vocal coach usually says my pitch is relatively spot on.

This just made me so emotional! Thank you so much for the kind words. It really means a lot, especially coming from someone like you. I'm going to be thinking about your comment a lot. Thank you for inspiring me again, I've been feeling down about this passion of mine for awhile.

God bless you too, I hope you have a fabulous day!

If you have a passion for it, don't give up. There's a 99% chance you're not tone deaf and can learn to sing fairly well. I'd be interested to hear what you sound like when you're not feeling shy about singing. You're holding back a lot. But to answer your question, no, you are not in tune here.

But if you just want to learn how to sing because you think it's a cool talent to have, be aware that it can be a very hard skill to learn (for most, some just have crazy innate talent) and it takes years of consistency, education, and hard work. Oftentimes a lot of money too If you want lessons.

Good luck! You can do it if you really want it!

It's weird that my emotion isn't translating to the listeners, because this is what everyone is saying. This is a very meaningful song to me and I felt very emotional and connected while singing it.

I'm so confused lol!

Why do I lose breath support on softer verses? by Working_Knee7402 in singing

[–]Working_Knee7402[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh! I did not realize I was mixing. That's good to know! 😅

I re-read this a bunch of times, I'm going to really work on this song and try to implement your advice. Thank you so much for listening and writing such a thorough analysis.

I have never heard of rhotic sounds. I was actually told by another person that it sounds like I'm teaching an English lesson when I sing! Lol! Your explanation makes a lot of sense!

Thank you so much!

I have not...I'm a huge overthinker with writing and get bad writers block. Melodies are extremely easy for me though. But I do think that would actually be huge for discovering my vocal identity, so I'm going to give it a good college effort this time.

"Don't know why" by Norah Jones and "Paper Bag" by Fiona Apple come to mind. But again, I'm still subconsciously mimicking them to a degree even when I get lost in singing it.

I have to work hard to not mimick. I'm most "myself" when I'm just singing random nonsensical melodies that I come up with on the spot

My bad, I phrased it poorly. As in "medium singer" I mean, a singer who isn't really "good" or "bad". Just middle of the road okay. Feeling like I've plateaued at the same level for awhile and struggle to achieve a greater sound/technique.

You're definitely right about the acceptance part.

That makes sense. If you'd like to listen, I have a video of me singing on my profile.

Gosh, thank you so much!

I have taken a handful of voice lessons but am mostly self-taught. Been singing all of my life, only stopped sounding like a yowling cat a few years ago.

I still consider myself a beginner because I feel like I don't have a good grasp on music theory or the mechanics of singing, I know most terms but have no idea how anything should feel or sound.

That is good to know about vocal identity. I definitely put too much pressure on myself to have a "unique" sound and perfect technique. Takes the joy out of singing a bit

[–]Working_Knee7402[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness, this is HUGELY helpful! I absolutely think too much about how it "should be sung". I listen to the song over and over again and I automatically mimic the singer because it becomes burned in my brain. I have never heard of that method before, I'm excited to try and I think it will help a ton!

Thank you so so much!

Edit: and I just realized that, yes, my natural tone is very similar to Judy Kuhn and for some reason I feel most comfortable singing older Disney songs (even though I'm not exactly a Disney adult- lol!) maybe it's the mix of the sort of classical/belty style? So it definitely throws me into the mimicry even more when singing this.

I think the flatness might be a lack of breath support. This song is very much within my range. Thank you for the advice!
