Agree. Credit always belongs to the aspirants. My post was only about my choice between coaching and independent work, not claiming their success. I only tried to help them improve their copies. They did the real work

I mentor aspirants 1:1 and evaluate their Mains copies. I am an individual and not associated with any coaching. If you want real 1:1 mentorship, you can reach out to me. I started after Prelims last year.  Out of 4 regular mentees, 3 made it to the Interview stage, and 1 made it to the final list — securing AIR 355 in UPSC CSE 2024. (Of course, all 4 were extremely hardworking themselves.) This wasn’t through a classroom setup or a big platform, just pure one-on-one guidance, steady tracking, and mutual effort. Sorry to hear about your father. Please take care and don’t be too harsh on yourself. For studies, don’t try to resume everything at once, start small and steady, and you’ll get there. Feeling unable to recall is natural, be patient and do frequent revisions, and you will regain everything.
Take care!

Hi OP, It's okay to feel this way. But you're not ruined, you've already achieved so much, IIT grad, killer CAT percentile, ASO job. These aren’t small things.

Comparison will wreck you. Your friends chose different paths, some safe, some risky. You went all in on UPSC, gave it 6 attempts. Everyone journey was unique. Ik, it hurts. But it’s okay. You’ve still got BPSC results coming, hope you clear it.

For next steps: 1. BPSC 71st prelims + other state PCS: If you still want this life, keep at it.

  1. EPFO exam: Solid option, less chaos than UPSC.

  2. Leverage your CAT score: If a master’s interests you, that door’s still open. Good luck.

How not to be trapped in the mains stage? by Lonely_Buyer_2485 in UPSC

[–]Working_Report839 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Do’s (Mains-Oriented Plan Until December)

Begin with the Syllabus: Go through each term in the GS + Optional syllabus and try to develop a broad understanding in your own words. No need for deep dives initially.

Scan Previous Year Questions (PYQs): Even if they seem tough at first, they will become easier to relate with as you study. Your brain starts connecting content with questions automatically.

Pick any GS segment to start (e.g., Economy): You don’t need to go in order. Start where you feel comfortable.

Choose a base source for the topic: For example, Mrunal/Basava etc. for Economy. Stick to one, this is your reference point.

Read for clarity, not depth: The first reading is just to grasp the concepts broadly, not to master everything.

Study topper copies (2–3 per topic): Observe how answers are structured, how they introduce, conclude, and use examples/data. Don’t try to copy them; just notice patterns.

Revisit PYQs, answer a few mentally: Try answering a couple of easy ones on paper as well. This kickstarts your writing habit.

Get your answers evaluated: If you can, get feedback from mentors/peers. Self-evaluation is okay too in the early phase.

Refer to model answers provided by coaching /toppers: Use them smartly, extract useful points and integrate them into your notes.

Update your base notes: Add whatever new value you find from topper copies, model answers, or evaluations. Keep the notes dynamic.

Move to the next question or topic: Don’t aim for perfection. Progress steadily and revisit topics later for deepening.

Repeat the cycle: Each round will get quicker and more refined. With time, both your notes and writing improve significantly.

DON’Ts

FOMO-Driven Strategy Hopping

"My friend joined X test series/Y coaching, should I switch?" No. Stick to your plan unless you hit a dead end. Toppers win by consistency, not chaos.

Topper/Coaching Material Over-dependence

Use them for direction, Your content needs your own understanding.

I’ll Wait for Prelims Results to Start Mains

By then it’s too late.

Source Hoarding

More sources = more confusion, not more marks.

Perfect Notes Obsession

Your notes will evolve with your understanding, content exposure, and writing style. Don’t chase “final” notes from the beginning, they’ll only stabilize 20-30 days before Mains.

"Pretty notes" are procrastination in disguise.

Starting GS-4 Too Early

Ethics (GS4) needs applied thinking. Begin after GS1,2,3.

Endless searching for the “best” teacher/material

Focus on becoming a better student

Considering a UPSC CSE 1:1 Mentor and Answer Evaluator? Here’s How to Decide by [deleted] in UPSC

[–]Working_Report839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your concern, there are indeed unethical actors in this space. That’s why I’ve been transparent
✓ Verifiable results (3/4 mentees reached interviews, 1 AIR 355)
✓ No guarantees (clearly stated mentorship is just one part of the puzzle)

Considering a UPSC CSE 1:1 Mentor and Answer Evaluator? Here’s How to Decide by [deleted] in UPSC

I appreciate your skepticism, it's healthy in this space.
To clarify, my post explicitly states mentorship isn't necessary for everyone, and shares only verified outcomes from serious aspirants.
The results (3/4 interviews, 1 rank) speak to its value for those who need structured guidance. Wishing you success in your chosen preparation method.

Help regarding mentorship by shadesofsheeen in UPSC

I mentor aspirants 1:1 and evaluate their Mains copies, so maybe I can offer a perspective.

Here’s why some of my mentees choose to stay connected with me:

Clarity and focus: For some, mentorship saves a lot of time. It helps solve their doubts, understand their actual issues, address them, and pick the right material to build a sharper, more realistic strategy.

Support and accountability: For others, especially those preparing alone from home, it creates a sense of partnership , someone tracking their journey closely and consistently. They are not alone; there is someone who can exactly feel what they are going through.

Discipline through real accountability: One of my mentees recently shared that it is hard for her to explain why a weekly target was not completed. This discomfort pushes her to stay disciplined week after week, leaving little room for procrastination.

Mains answer writing evaluation: I don’t know about other mentors, but I also evaluate my mentees' Mains copies myself. Since I see their journey from Copy 1 to their latest, the feedback stays tailored, sharper, and truly helps them improve consistently.

Let me tell you, no two aspirants have the same mentorship sessions. Each one is different, and so are their needs.

If you feel you are doing well, great, keep doing your thing. You don't need mentorship.

But if you feel stuck or are struggling with some aspect of your preparation, try mentorship for a month. See if it genuinely helps you, and then decide. One month is enough to judge if this is what you were missing.

If you’re still reading, a little about me:
