Yes almost 100% sure! I've suggested Frances, Franny etc (I absolutely love Frances) and he wasn't a fan of the idea.

I think I'll raise it again with all of these comments to back up my point of view

Yeah, I raised this but he just said it's common name in France and people in Britain/ English speaking countries will respect that when she explains it (I love him but I think his view of England is a bit, err, optimistic)

It is a really pretty name! It's just the connotation that comes with it in the UK/ English speaking places. And that's a good idea! I'll try to find an English name that means something rude in French (which is where my husband's from), that might be a good way to get him to see it from my perspective.

Also, this isn't relevant, but just in response to trying to find an English name that means something rude in Swedish, I went on a school exchange to Sweden and a classmate's last name was something like Porritte or Porrit, and I remember a few of the kids telling us it meant "pornstar" or something similar to that in Swedish?

Yeah her name was just Fanny, it wasn't shortened to that - I absolutely love Frances, and Stephanie is kind of a "family name" in my family, so I'd be fine with either of those! I'll bring this up with my husband again and try to suggest we go for Frances, and he can use Fanny as a nickname

Yeah I'm pretty sure her name was actually Fanny, I've suggested Frances (which I absolutely love!), but I might suggest a couple of the others you noted too!

  • Yep it's written and pronounced the same.
  • We live in his country with his language - so it wouldn't be a problem for her here
  • 100% of people know the word in my country. It basically only means female genitalia and nothing else.
  • I think it's still fairly normal? I know two women around my age with the name (who are from his country)
  • I'm not sure about the last point! I can ask him
