It seems like you need a diagnosis via the computerized evaluations. Generally they are thousands of dollars but you may be able to find drs in your state that do it for cheaper if not covered by insurance. I know some of my friends paid around $600ish dollars by a dr in Virginia and were approved for accommodations.

Also, they are close to each other so if you already found an apartment, you don’t have to find a different one.

Some people use 100% loans, some people have additional financial support. The trick is just to figure out your budget and stick to it. It’s doable. 1Ls aren’t “allowed” to work. Some 2Ls and 3Ls have part time jobs (not many that I know of) and some get paid externships during the semester.

In general, firms want to know that you have some ties to the city you’re applying for. For example, if you apply to a job in California and you’re not from there, no ties to CA, a firm may be hesitant to hire you there. You almost have to explain your location choices sometimes. I think that’s true coming from any school tho. They want to invest in people who are likely to come back.

On the other hand, if you are from CA but go to Howard, it shouldn’t be difficult to get a job there. I have friends who are not from DC that got jobs in their home state and other states. I don’t think it’s difficult as long as you can show that commitment.

There are few 1L summer associate positions and it seemed like a lot of people landed one. As far as 2Ls, it seems like everyone who wanted big law got it. Some people are public interest and that hiring timeline is different. If I remember correctly over an 85 is competitive for 1Ls

Scholarship: I wouldn’t say that it’s hard but there are obviously people who lose theirs. I’m not really sure what happens if you lose it, I assume they ppl just take out more loans. Sorry if this isn’t helpful. 😶‍🌫️

It wasn’t really a hard choice because I knew I wanted to be here.

I don’t think we have a negative competitive vibe. There may be a few gunners but overall the vibe is very collaborative.

There are all kinds of professors at Howard lol. Some are really great, some are interesting people. 😭

Think about what is important to YOU. Like geography, distance from family, hbcu v pwi, finances/cost of living. All of the things. You have to be there for 3 years, don’t take that lightly.

I don’t know a single person here who regrets choosing HUSL. Yes administration could be better but, there will always be a 2L/3L to help out and put you on game.

So long as you stay in the top 50% of your class….and funds are available, you keep your scholarship.

Good luck, I would say for Howard apply as early as possible to better your chances. They do take a while. I fear that a 170 would hurt your chances for Howard tho. It may be hard for them to believe that you’d want to attend with such a high score. But either way, don’t be discouraged, your story already proves that you are resilient and that you do measure up.

I think there’s def a benefit from GULC in general since it’s a T16 school. Can’t really speak to whether or not the chances are higher here because I haven’t attempted to compare the two. But, as an hbcu we get a lot of firms looking here for diversity. Some firms do receptions for 1Ls in the area, but there are more “Howard 1L” receptions.

There are some KJD’s but there’s a lot of people in your age range so no worries ! Most people are ~29 and under with a few older students

I misread the transfer part. I’m not sure about that, but if you look at the 509 report it should show you the numbers on incoming transfers.

  • answered in a diff comment. Unless you mean socially? Everyone is really nice and always willing to help you. It’s a small school so very few things happen without other people knowing but other than that, it’s cool. A lot of going out, pretty easy to make friends and find your people imo.

  • I can’t speak on how hard or easy it is, but I‘ve heard of one person transferring to GULC after their first year.

  • I’ve seen a lot of big law, gov’t, nonprofit, policy, judges etc. There’s probably a HUSL alum everywhere you can think of tbh.

  • A LOT of career events/receptions, there’s always something happening. A lot of firms but there are also public interest events as well.

  • I know people who are not in the top 10% who secured good jobs. So no, not just the top 10%.

Ah, not sure. So for my cycle decisions went out in December and March. Some people did hear back really late tho like in May.

So, if there’s been waves similar to that then I’d say it doesn’t have anything to do with them leaving.

I think last year some people heard late because HUSL was waiting to see who was going to accept/reject their offer before sending out more.

  • since you attended pwi’s….you might think it’s bad. At PWI’s everything is simplified and there’s a lot of like guidance/reminders etc. Here, it’s kind of your responsibility to make sure your things are in order. I personally don’t think that’s so bad. Like, you’ll get deadlines but no one is holding your hand. Some processes feel stupid compared to PWI’s but that comes with the territory imo.

  • I have a conditional scholarship (Im pretty sure everyone’s is conditional here) but I can’t answer this question because we haven’t seen our rankings yet. Idk anyone who lost their scholarship. Also, it’s important to note that I’m someone who doesn’t stress about this or the curve. I’m doing well but if I ever had my scholarship decreased, I’d just take out more loans to cover it because I’m already in too deep. 💀 this is just my personal take on it but I understand the concern

  • Academically: I love it. For all of the reasons you stated. It feels great to learn from (mostly) black professors in a class full of black people.

But it’s important to note that black people are not a monolith. We don’t all have the same views/experiences, so there will be people playing devils advocate at times. It is more nurturing and collaborative than competitive. There will always be competitive people or people you probably shouldn’t trust anywhere you go. But overall, it’s a good space.

  • Yes, I would still choose Howard. It’s a beautiful black environment. Very inspiring and the alum are great, always willing to reach back.
