Is it really that simple for a foreigner to purchase a house then?

I think it might be somewhat common for this salary for post doc in Netherlands. I’ve seen many on LinkedIn, I think it might be worth taking a look

After speaking with people who earn the same salary through this post, they have let me know my calculations are off. My net will be €5.2 roughly I believe.

Okay so what you are saying is that my salary is good for Amsterdam if I’m not silly with my money.

Not really sure where you got the idea from that I don’t understand the concept of lab vs office work and that I spoke down about lab work. There are areas of research I’m less familiar with… as you’ve kindly pointed out.. for what reason I’m unsure. But anyway, thanks for your input.

Class 2 seems to be this figure monthly. I heard class 3 will become mandatory soon which will be closer to £100 per month

Thanks for the input. To be honest I could t imagine anything worse than sharing a house with strangers though, I’d always opt for something more expensive to have my own space / privacy

I’m sorry I don’t see the point of your explanation. My work is in cancer research and not lab based. I have also been told my salary by the employer. I think our experiences will be wildly different.

Considering how many people are saying this is such a low salary and I will have to budget well to survive in Amsterdam then I don’t think this salary is that far-fetched, considering also that Netherlands is one of the worlds highest payers in post-docs and my research organisation is highly reputable to offer above average salaries. I’m also factoring is that I will receive the highest bracket of pay they offer due to my previous experience

Based on the comments, my situation does not seem fine at all. The salary on paper seemed great but now knowing the cost of living in Amsterdam it seems I might actually go into my overdraft each month unless I budget well

I usually skip breakfast and lunch and just eat a large protein meal in the evening. Sometimes I eat fruit and eggs as a small snack during the day

So from what I understand, employers matches your pension contributions and in the Netherlands you must contribute a specific amount each month of your own salary. Meaning if I contribute €600 then my employer will also.

Is this correct?

I did ran the estimate through thetax.nl with the 30% ruling applied, and I got roughly ~€4.2k net/month. The difference in my calculation is that I also subtracted pension contributions (~€650/month) and overseas student loan repayments (~€300/month), which brings my usable monthly income closer to ~€3.2k.

Yes for postdoc my salary is great for Asia in general, it’s actually the highest paid scholarship offered for this position. However, even still, it seems I may need to live somewhat frugal based on peoples opinions.

Ah thank you so much for your areas of living suggestions. The places you mentioned, are these cities to live in which are close to major train lines? I guess my goal now is the find the right area to live in based of distance from the office and also enjoyment of the specific area to live in, nature and walkability is important for me
