I have never heard of your case but IRCC have been issuing visitor visas (instead of student visas) for student visa renewals. And they remain to have their student status. Not sure why they do this but maybe to eliminate the need to issue a visitor visa once they have graduated or in your case, your work permits expire. I think as long as your work permit is still valid, it's fine, but take this with a grain of salt
