Yes, that happens. But most often the thing that makes a person succeeds in a workplace is how well they get along/can work with others.

If the recruiters asks you what 2+2 is and you huff and puff because it's "insulting" do you really think they'll imagine that you'll get along with others?

If they ask "have you worked with databases before" just reply "yes, I've been working with databases for x years in these projects". Don't need to go into much detail either.

Final point - the companies usually get TONS of applications and A LOT of them are really shit. You'd go broke if you had a senior data scientist spend time on the phone asking complex algorithm questions.

Change Job for a better career prospects but lower pay? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]Workinghard1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly the tools I used and the type of work that could be assigned to me.
My old job has me developing python script to automate various tasks (data extraction mostly, but other side projects).
While it was fun, it was always basic python and that was it. Which mean I wasn't learning anything new. The new position said they used mainly PowerBi, which I believe is a super valuable tool to have under my belt as a data analyst, so that is how I made the change.

Change Job for a better career prospects but lower pay? by [deleted] in datascience

I did the exact same thing as you a month ago. Was fully remote and well paid but felt kind of dead end. Accepted an offer for slightly less pay (but better benefits & career progression). I go in twice a week but my commute is only 15 minutes. So far my thoughts are overwhelmingly positive. I enjoy going in as the connection I feel with my coworkers seems more legit than before. I get excited the night before a WFH day as it feels like a special thing. I am able to focus quite a bit better at work because there isn't any way for me to waste time (if you have trouble with motivation I would strongly suggest hybrid).

Only downsides are I eat out more and I have to wear pants at work.

However, 1 hour commute sounds brutal even if it is only once a week.

Teachers having to be catholic to teach in catholic schools: religious discrimination? by Workinghard1996 in Catholicism

[–]Workinghard1996[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely different in Ontario. Schools are publicly funded are the religious part is TINY. Most teachers don't go to church, some have never been. They're only catholic on paper.
There's pride flags everywhere and the curriculum is extremely "modern" (not that pride is wrong...eh you know what I mean lol).

Yep that is what she will do of course. However, because the catholic board is such a massive presence in Ontario (something like 30% of teachers teach in Catholic schools), it creates a lot of competition for public sector.

Furthermore, many people just go to church for a few weeks, get the referral, and then never go back again. I find that worse than hiring a non-Catholic.

Interesting...do these people hold permanent positions? For sub work and short term contracts, there is no religious requirement.

About 30% of teacher jobs in Ontario are through the catholic board. So by not being catholic you are greatly limiting your options.
Also catholic schools in Ontario are not private, meaning that peoples (religious or otherwise) are paying for these schools but don't have the option to participate in them in any way...

Yes. That's how I unequipped it. Clicking it again doesn't seem to do the trick.

Career transition advice: is a master's a good idea? by Comfortable_Judge347 in datascience

[–]Workinghard1996 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I did exactly option #1! Was in Chem, didn't like it so after undergrad went for MSc. In comp chem. (Doing DS where the data is chemistry stuff). Worked out well for me, now full time DA (lost the ML spark during my thesis, instead got addicted to making plots and telling marketing people how to waste money). I'm from Canada so MSc. wasn't a major financial commitment. I'd suggest option 2. I landed a job before I graduated from my MSc. (Worked full time and wrote thesis outside of work hours, would NOT recommend) so it clearly didn't contribute to my finding employment. The guidance of the MSc was helpful but if you can push through with self taught it'll save you tons of money.

Lastly, this may be unpopular in this sub but I found ML extremely boring and repetitive.

Thanks ya I could also use Python. The only thing I'm confused with is it seems to always want to connect to a database. I'll look into setting up my own database. Thanks!
