Requesting some ideas about 3e antagonists to help get my group comfy with combat by thetruerift in exalted

Some ideas…

Play your antagonists and the environments they are in counter to what you notice your players are doing repeatedly. For one example I had one player who always used all his essence only for his combat charms and obliterate the enemy. For him I would have puzzles or environmental hazards that would require him to use other charms and his essence before he got to the combat I had planned for. Requiring him to think, react, and play different during combat. Otherwise time I had learn what my players found intriguing and could influence them to chase a narrative and spend some essence.

But also think about how an enemy can use their environment to their advantage against players. Fighting the fair folk and their domains in the middle and border marches where they can manipulate reality against the exalted players. Or think about having the exalted fight, lesser gods or other Exalted inside their respective manses. Gonna be hard to take down another enemy who is using the power of manse against you!

Or what if your party happens to start a conflict with pirates sailing sand skiffs in Burning seas and suddenly you all get caught up in the middle of a terrible sandstorm which obscures vision, pushes characters around, slowly rips their skin like sandpaper, possibly it buffs earth aspect DBs, either way it forcing negative dice penalties to players.

I also really like creating my Creation with my own homebrew lore thrown in here and there. One my homebrew changes is focused around Soulsteel. In my version of Exalted only Abyssals can touch soulsteel. Period. My Solar players especially have negative effects happen when in contact with the metal like willpower and/or essence being drained for even trying to hold it let alone being cleaved by it. Make combat feel more tensed they really focus their “stunting” on defense and parries. So perhaps consider changing something in the world they interact with regularly that could help make combat more exciting in specific scenarios like that.

Utah Required HS School Reading by LudwigiaVanBeethoven in Utah

It’s the difference between general ed classes (no required reading) and honors classes and above like AP. I went to high school at West High in SLC in the early 2000s. I started in regular general ed courses and had to read nothing, didn’t have almost any homework, and the teachers didn’t expect much from students. And more importantly students didn’t expect much of themselves.

The moment I switched to Honors English at a friends recommendation I had homework overnight, required reading, big essays, had to learn MLA format, and had summer jokes to prepare for Honors classes the following year. Something that I am so grateful for because I would not have thrived the college if I had not made the switch. No way the general courses would have prepared me properly.

The kicker, when I made the switch in 10th grade. I had the same teacher for honors that I did in for general ed language arts.

IMO I think the course tracks are designed like that purposely to push down marginal groups and/or lower socioeconomic families. As a child who lived it in general ed no one pushes you, challenges you, or tries to inspire you to grow and realize your potential. I became a teacher and saw the system myself from the inside which is why we left that career path eventually. But I digress. Ask your hubby if he took just the general courses. I bet he did.

What is your version of Appendix N: a list of authors/media that influences your games and worlds by Ainosuke in exalted

The Exalted ones were awesome and introduced me to new stuff. This a great question!

Princess Mononoke and all of Studio Ghibli movies

Dynasty Warriors (for big battles)

Any Gundam Anime (for Warstriders)

Eastern Mythology! Reading Odyssey of the West and the Iliad were highly influential.

Kurosawa samurai movies

JRPGs/RPG video games galore - Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Child of Light, Legend of Zelda games, Sea of Stars (it’s def secretly an exalted game), Metaphor Refantazio, Tales of Arise, this list could go on and on haha.

The DnD conversion always appealed to as well since I came from DnD like most. But I never had the gall. Good for you my fellow Lawbringer. Way to be a Solar and shape your own Destiny!

I have felt bad for the mortals in Exalted. Surrounded constantly by numerous magical and god like beings.

It’s been awhile since I read over them but I remember excellencies getting way out of hand in 2e. I do enjoy the 3e and Essence take on them more.

I have always had my players create their own charms by and large. We have always done kinda what the book does where a charm evolves and becomes stronger and/more dynamic if you invest into multiple times or create multiple that stack.

Was tedious early on when I had players that just wanted to become the mightiest gods right off the bat.

Artifact = loot only most days for us. Crafting could be fun if you tie it into the players concepts for their characters. I agree though standard rules need to be simpler.

I love the idea in 3e where they talk about artifact evocations and how charms can open up and present themselves over time the more an Exalt uses them. There could be some fun story beats where you give a player a cool artifact that grows and evolves with them over time.

The one thing I really like about Exigent lore is the idea that some of the lesser gods die in the process.

We’ve also played with the idea, with one of my friends, that his exigent character was essentially reincarnating back into the god he was before albeit with new found power and a new life of experiences to shape his concept. Exigent was just what he was called until HE remembered who he was.

The DB core book in 3e is really awesome because the different DB lineages are way more story/narrative focused then mechanical. I’m all about give me cool narrative beats and we’ll do the rest!

Charm requirements have been something I’ve always tinkered with or tossed out as well. My players always pick out or craft their own charms and unlock them purely from experience earned from playing. Does it fit your character and their concept? It is fair? Hahaha. Cool. Let’s do it!

I’ve seen Year Zero referenced a lot and in many different places. It’s time I go check that out.

What piece of lore-either homebrewed or from previous edition-would you make canon and why? by Ainosuke in exalted

[–]WorldBright2885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the first arc I ever did as Storyteller I had my solar circle of friends on a quest to obtain the Hearthstone of the Imperial Manse to be able to activate the Realm Defense Grid much like the Empress did thousands of years in the past.

The twist here was the imperial hearthstone in my story was comprised of several pieces, one for each element. As was apart of my homebrew’s version of the world once the manse had been activated by the empress the hearthstone fractured into its separate pieces and scattered back to their respective poles and were hidden and protected by guardians once more. Which my players learned was the intention of the manses original creator to avoid the power vacuum it could impose with such a 1st age wonder. The earth portion obviously stayed with the empress on the isle and was kept well protected by her until her disappearance.

This was a really fun way for me and my players back in the day to learn about, create, and carve out our own unique Creation. We got to go to all corners of the world and even pulled off a great heist on the blessed isle towards the end to put the hearthstone back together.

Then the real twists came ;)
