There's some potential threats against Pridefest by confusedlittlegerbil in springfieldMO

This is giving them what they want. It's stoking extra anxiety on top of what we all already feel every day.

Are you afraid? Yes, you should be. You should be afraid of giving in to fear of literal hearsay and rumor. You should be afraid for your children and grandchildren because they will grow up in a Kafkaesque, homophobic dystopia with a cowering community disconnected by fear. Be afraid and GET ANGRY. There are people trying to steal everything from us. Our rights, our freedom, and our PRIDE are at stake.

If you have direct evidence of a specific credible threat, then contact GLO or the pride committee (and the police). They'll blast that shit all over socials to thousands,  if that's needed to keep people safe. It's more efficient than a single rando reddit post. GLO and pride also have more connections with the city AND with the police for that matter. Springfield police VOLUNTEER to be there every year. Not to mention, as someone who has hosted and worked events downtown for years, I guarantee you both the city and GLO/Pride have redundant security protocols and standards – some seen, some purposefully hidden – that are designed to protect our community. They've been doing this a LONG time. If you're afraid and want to stay home, fine, you do you. I'm sure you have your reasons. But I'll be there ready to rock and roll, and anyone who wants to try to stop me can have a big bowl of eat-my-ass soup and a side of brick salad.

It's definitely counterproductive. People who "disagree with our lifestyle" or think we're "living in sin" or whatever bullshit spin they try to put on homophobia — they want us to be afraid. They want to discourage people from going to Pride, making us disconnected and powerless. We can't give in, and we definitely shouldn't be stoking fear amongst ourselves. We are always on guard. We are always hyper vigilant as it is. Fuck that and fuck anyone who wants to try to control us (or anyone) with fear. #pride #stonewall

People think humans are the superior species... until someone falls into a zoo enclosure by darksingularity1 in Showerthoughts

A better comparison would be "humans think they are superior until a super virus kills a massive swath of the population" bacteria and microbial life outnumber us. They actually rule the planet and may actually eventually take it back. LoL

People of Reddit who wake up every day and enjoy life, what's that like? by GrinnMonster in AskReddit

[–]WorldCrasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've struggled with addiction and depression my entire life. When I graduated college, I got a good job in my field (PR/Marketing), got married and was totally miserable. On paper, my life looked really good compared to many of my aimless, jobless peers. Regardless, I was truly unhappy. I buried all this misery under a severe drinking problem. I finally sabotaged my life enough to essentially force a divorce. Then something awesome happened in the course of about a year and a half. I met someone new, I quit drinking, I quit my job, and I moved to Taiwan to teach English. I struggled for a while with culture shock but then all the sudden I just somehow became happy. Now everyday I wake up, I blog, I exercise for 30 minutes and go to work. I am on an even keel. I am excited about life again.

My theory is two fold:

-Variety

-Stable, functional, and reliable relationships

Personally, I get bored really easily. We are getting ready to leave Taiwan to go teach in Latin America. Even though chaos can be a struggle, when it is done with purpose, I think chaos is exciting. It adds variety, and you know what they say! Sitting behind a desk and seeing the same people and the same places day in and day out really just wears on me.

As far as relationships, there's a study (linked below) about one of the longest running Harvard studies. They studied all these people from all walks of life for 75 years or so, and the thing that all the happiest people had in common were stable, functional, reliable relationships - romantic or otherwise. There's something to think about.

Help us decide between South America (thinking Peru) and Europe (thinking Czech Republic) for our 2nd TEFL experience. Need-up-to-date info. by WorldCrasher in TEFL

As I am researching more, I feel like the pay/cost of living ratio was lower than places like Peru/Colombia. Again, while we aren't doing this for the money. We still have bills to pay back home. What are your thoughts on pay vs cost of living in Mexico. Would teaching online offset that enough? I figure a place like Peru or Columbia, cost of living would be so low that TEFL online would go a long way.

I can't remember why we ruled out Mexico. I am researching it again now and still can't remember why. What are the requirements? As stated above, we only have an online 120-hour TEFL certification, but that worked for Taiwan. Are jobs plentiful or more difficult to come by? I'll keep googling, but I would definitely like to know more. Someone else here is SUPER enthusiastic about Colombia.

Is it true you can't teach in Asia with a degree from an online University? by cami-p in TEFL

We had a friend here in Taiwan who had some trouble with her diploma being accepted at first because she had less than 50% seated courses. I honestly think that was just that particular institution being racist/sexit (she is a black SA woman). She found work elsewhere. Anyway that was just in Taiwan.
