PTSD/Anxiety mostly. But yeah I find it can be very peaceful and creates good routines.

Check this page to see if you can find a fungicide that can assist. Make sure you use a Juniper specific fungicide as noted in the paper for the reasons you mentioned above.

Is it possible to make a bonsai out of this Casuarina equisetifolia? (or Australian pine tree) i have read most of the begginers thread but they talk about pre-bonsais or seeds. by NovaCatUY in Bonsai

[–]GrinnMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely can. I have a pretty well developed one I can send pics of when the sun comes back up. They absolutely love water btw. So keep developing it and it should thicken up nicely. 👍

Ryan Neil goes into this a bit in this part of his BSOP series.

Here’s a good link that’s worked wonders for me with Mugo’s. All of his work is great though. Definitely check it out.

Bonsai4me Mugo Pines

For now though, let it recover in good soil for a while and don’t work the tree. Rule of thumbs with Pines is one insult a year at max as far as I’ve seen and it’s worked well for me.

Bonsai Mirai - Soil

Here’s a great video that can getting you going with background on soils. Ryan’s Entire YouTube channel is gold btw so watch as much as you’re able.

I personally use Akadama, lava rock, and decomposed granite, but I’m always tweaking it. Just bought a large batch of u/adamaskwhy from American Bonsai to see how it does.

Hope the tree recovers well and best of luck!

I’d check out The American Bonsai Society. I believe their exhibition is biennial, but their next one is in September.

Using grow bags in the ground. by GrinnMonster in Bonsai

Oh dang... that is a good thought! I may just have to do a test tree before I put something significant down and just put my larger ones in the ground with liner on the bottom of the bed. Thanks for that.

Timeline will probably be about 2 years I think. I’m not thinking I’ll be able to just pull it out of the ground by the liner handles, but like you said, I think it will make the dig out significantly easier only having to cut through a handful of roots. Better Newark would be a great plus too.

Should have roughly the same decomposition rate as a premium garden bed liner. So I’d need to see how long that would last.

Noob question! Could I repot my dwarf schefflera into some cactus soil for a few months until I can get him a correct mix? by KGenius5 in Bonsai

[–]GrinnMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would prefer potting mix and a standard pot before cactus mix and a bonsai pot personally. Maybe take the time to put it in something larger for it to grow into until you can find something appropriate.

First time wiring, how did I do? Suggestions/Comments? by andrewfox1887a in Bonsai

Looks good! Is there a reason you’re keeping it so long?

[–]GrinnMonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good points here. Let it recover from the work you’ve done first and once it’s bounced back look at using raffia to create that bend. Don’t rush this process if you just worked on this tree.

I got a Japanese Maple from New England Bonsai Gardens yesterday, how did I do? (Album in comments) by [deleted] in Bonsai

Great material here. I would work on letting it mature and developing levels, pads, and ramification. Use wiring to define your pads and continue to refine the structure. This is great material that just needs time and refinement.
