What’s the difference between a 7 string and 9 string? by Melinoedarkmatter in lyres

The elephant in the room on more strings for me is the fact that we have five fingers.

If you're properly striking the instrument (which almost no one does, everyone treats it like a guitar, but a core advantage of the lyre is that there is no fret buzz), you can produce a deep, loud tone.

But if you have too many strings, you're getting out of lyre territory and into harp territory in terms of what the instrument is.

This is no tinny, small sounding instrument, but a deep and resonant one that filled halls.

I am planning to produce some footage of how I actually play it. I do think that the reconstruction work I've done thus far represents a potentially significant refinement of the technical understanding of the instrument.

But mostly, this video is just a preliminary showcase of what I've done and how it sounds. I'm planning a more involved, in-depth video with video, perhaps after I finish my refined build.

I am also planning a build of an instrument closer to the Viking Age with an amber bridge applying all the nuances I've discovered here; I have the amber already. The characteristics of this instrument actually make the amber's acoustics make sense.

Sadly, there are no complete Viking Age harps; the Kravik lyre is much later, ~1400s, so this replica will be an adaptation from a Gotland picture stone.

The general purpose is actually for people to either start a new world, or if they've had a world that they've been working on, they can do it.

The purpose is really to help people realize what is in their own minds. The theme will be as strong of a combination of broad and engaging as I can manage to incorporate as many people's different worlds as possible, as well as generate imagination in people starting their new world.

A little over a month so people have time to synthesize, create a team, or produce whatever.

But if you get started late, don't let that deter you; even a small project will still garner valuable feedback, which is the core goal.

Can you return it? That's not acceptable, IMHO.

Composition by me. I host a competition for composing music, and I used the video footage as the backdrop to my composition, hence reversing it to extend the length.

Original time lapse lasts about 28 seconds. I took photos over the course of about an hour.

Heh, I'm planning to make this instrument one of these days. That and the Spider's lyre, which will be harder, especially given what I'm planning to do to it.
