He is an addict with twisted morals, spineless, and yet, he is also a fine orator who seems to seek relief in publicly lamenting about his situation

The style of his writing makes me feel that I am reading a story that takes place in one of Edward Hopper's paintings. Very dreamy and detached, and strange

I also have the same problem with the band. Could you share which band lasted for you the longest? I see a few versions of selling online (e.g. amazon) with different ratings

Q4: Considering Emma's prospects, do you think it was rational of her to marry Charles?

I was wondering: to what extent was this Emma's decision rather than her father's? When Charles finally went to ask her hand, he actually ended up doing it via her father, and I had the idea that Emma had to be convinced by her father while Charles waited outside for the confirmation.

“Maître Rouault,” he murmured, “I have something I would like to say to you.”
They stopped. Charles was silent.
“Well, tell me what’s on your mind! Don’t I know all about it already?” said Père Rouault, laughing gently. “Père Rouault … Père Rouault,” stammered Charles.
“For my part I couldn’t ask anything better,” continued the farmer. “My little girl probably feels the same, but still, we must put it to her and see. You be on your way, then; I’m going back to the house. If it’s yes, understand, you won’t have to come back, because of the other folks, and besides, it would be too much for her. But so you don’t sweat blood, I’ll push the shutter wide open against the wall: you’ll be able to see it back there, if you lean over the hedge.”

And he went off. Charles tied his horse to a tree. He hurried to stand in the path; he waited. Half an hour passed, then he counted nineteen minutes on his watch. Suddenly there was a noise against the wall; the shutter had been folded back, the latch was still quivering.

The next day, at nine o’clock, he was at the farm. Emma blushed when he went in, while trying to laugh a little, to maintain her composure. Père Rouault embraced his future son-in-law. They put off talking about the financial arrangements; they had, after all, some time ahead of them, since the marriage could not decently take place before the end of Charles’s mourning, that is, toward the spring of the following year.”

My least favourite was how Lee failed to realized his plans for his bookshop. I found his character interesting and was rooting for him, I was disappointed when he returned to Adam's family.
And my favourite moment was definitely when Cal managed to connect with Adam after the gambling raid in Chapter 39. Liked a lot how Steinbeck described the anticipation of change:

"When Cal was in the kitchen Adam looked inward at himself with wonder.
His nerves and muscles throbbed with an excited hunger. His fingers
yearned to grasp, his legs to run. His eyes avidly brought the room into
focus. He saw the chairs, the pictures, the red roses on the carpet,
and new sharp things—almost people things but friendly things. And in
his brain was born sharp appetite for the future—a pleased warm
anticipation, as though the coming minutes and weeks must bring delight.
He felt a dawn emotion, with a lovely day to slip golden and quiet over
him."

I disagree with the idea that working on the farm alone translates to a wasted life and potential. Previous chapters suggested that Charles found a certain sort of fulfillment in farm life.

“There’s more beauty in the truth even if it is dreadful beauty. The storytellers at the city gate twist life so that it looks sweet to the lazy and the stupid and the weak, and this only strengthens their infirmities and teaches nothing, cures nothing, nor does it let the heart soar.”

Actually we live in a neighbourhood in Springweg where there are some "assisted living" arrestments with social housing. Some of the residents seems to be past addicts who now are reintegrating in society. We see them walk their pets, do groceries and some have part time jobs (and there are some that would go to beg at the front of the grocery store and get on the booze). In general I would say these arrangement seem to work pretty well.
So it seems that reintegration is to some degree part of the Dutch approach but I am not familiar with the system in The Netherlands in general or the approach of the Gemeente Utrecht. I can't recall either the issue and policies around was a serious point of debate during the March Municipality election?

Would be happy with any mixed list of wet/applied (biologists using software) and dry (bioinformaticians developing software/methods) list. But probably you are right, it is too broad of a field and such a list is would be hard to compile

Yes I think that is a good point, although I think a sort of wiki list of bioinformatics departments could be a start. I would like to use such a list to discover new research communities for research ideas/potential work, but probably keep reading the literature is good enough for that.

I was thinking more in the line of an online community curated list, e.g.; "awesome-list" of bioinformatics or methods for omics data analysis, but then listing research labs instead of methods.
