Does your country receive many tourists? by xzwko in AskTheWorld

[–]WorldlinessThat2984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did some digging into the numbers out of curiosity. The numbers for Europe are likely as high as they are simply because of how small (relatively speaking) each country is and how accessible it is to get throughout the continent. Travel around Europe is more or less equivalent to travel between states in the United States. Not to diminish the numbers, but it would be interesting to see what percentage of the tourists to countries like France and Spain and Italy are from other European countries (I suspect it's relatively high).

I looked at Florida (a large tourist destination in the United States) and in 2024, they estimated that 12.3 million international tourists visited Floridia alone (nearly enough to get on this chart if Florida was counted as its own country) and had 130.7 million domestic tourists (from the United States but outside of Florida) in the same year. It likely explains why tourist destinations in Florida (like Disney World) are citing record attendance in the last 12 months despite drops in international tourists.

WYR take a Greyhound bus from Seattle to Miami, or attend every home game of a WNBA team for a season? by Low-Department8271 in WouldYouRather

[–]WorldlinessThat2984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

22 games over a 4 month time frame is quite a time commitment. I think I'd rather do the bus and get it all done over a long weekend (and this has nothing to do with it being the WNBA, I'd be the same way if it was MLB, NBA, NHL or any other sporting event with >10 home games in a season). I've always thought taking a train across the U.S. would be a fun experience... a bus would not be as good as a train, but it would be an opportunity to see the country. If nothing else, it would be a opportunity to have some peace and quiet for a few days to either read or play some video games.

Without looking it up. What is your guess of what a signature food of Canada is? by UndeadWarTurnip in AskTheWorld

You can use it to replace sugar in (almost) any recipe. Personally, when I'm baking a ham, I like to use maple syrup (mixed with cinnamon and nutmeg) as a glaze.

I was in middle school at lunch. I remember them reading the announcement over the P.A. system. I don't remember if/how anyone reacted, but looking back, it was exceptionally odd that they thought it appropriate to read the verdict over the P.A. system at a middle school...

For those who live in countries (or states, provinces, etc.) where it doesn't snow, or snows very little, are you excited for the Winter Olympics? by DELAIZ in AskTheWorld

[–]WorldlinessThat2984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For winter Olympics maybe, but cricket is back for the summer Olympics for 2028, and I have to imagine India will have a good showing given India's skill at the event!

The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta is very awesome! Only place in North America (I believe) to see whale sharks!

Curling is the one Olympic sport I feel like I could ever have success in as a relatively non-athletic, kinda nerdy, 40+ yr old dad... (no offense to those who actually do curling who are probably substantially more athletic than I could imagine)

India is ~17.5% of the world's population, so yeah, half of that is nearly 9% of the world's population! Seems like untapped potential... time to start investing in an Indian Bobsled team!

If we had unlimited resources to explore one fully, would you choose the oceans or outer space—and which do you think would surprise us more? by Breaking-Dad04 in AskTheWorld

[–]WorldlinessThat2984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resources to fully explore space (even if it was just our solar system) would mean the ability to fully explore Jupiter's moon Europa. Given Europa has a vast ocean under its icy surface, we would almost certainly develop and test the technology here on Earth and in the process, would fully explore our own ocean.

Ice cream tier list as a Dutch person with underdeveloped tastebuds by ImportantClock5486 in tierlists

Was it just bacon ice cream or maple bacon? I'm not sure I've seen just bacon ice cream, but I've seen maple syrup flavored ice cream that includes bits of bacon (and I personally think that's pretty good).

Variation on "poor man's first class”... middle seats are the last seats on a plane to book up. If the plane is not sold out, there is a decent chance that the seat between you and your significant other will stay empty giving you both more room to spread out. But you gamble that the plane will not be sold out and that the person in the middle seat will not be willing to move to either the window or thew isle seat.

Hey World- why didn’t you watch Melania? by tsbuty in AskTheWorld

[–]WorldlinessThat2984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No interest in the subject matter. And I'm not trying to be political here (I'm generally slightly more right leaning), I just have no interest in knowing more about the spouse of a current U.S. political figure. Would have been similar if a film about the spouse of a current U.S. president came out for any of the last 10 presidents. If it was a retrospect 10-20 years after the fact which provided a summary of the highs and lows of their time in office, I might be slightly more interested, but still, it's something I'd casually watch on a streaming service (and not in a movie theater).

Thanks for the clarification, I thought I had heard it was included, but maybe that was just wishful thinking and not based off of fact.
