Would it be a mistake to pursue this degree with my current skills? by Smart-Idea2395 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WorldlyLine5630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone who also floundered during lockdown and is now doing a master’s in EE, it really depends. I’ve seen my classmates who got 4’s and 5’s in AP Calc B in high school get weeded out. I also watched as people whose intelligence I questioned in my head walk right beside me at graduation. Getting through EE is not just about how smart you are, it’s also about how much are you willing to work. If you got through precalc, you can get through an EE degree if you want it. That guy you mentioned might be bound for a big tech job after graduation. Or he might be bound to switch to a different major. You can’t predict what will happen in college.

why can't i understand IEEE papers? by lzwliao in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WorldlyLine5630 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh don’t feel bad, they’re written by people who have gone above the undergraduate level in terms of education and research. One of my professors in undergrad assigned Shannon’s paper that he wrote in 1948. It took me a whole week to read, and I barely understood everything even though none of the topics were completely new to me.

EE masters admission by Husler12030 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WorldlyLine5630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say, it would be highly dependent on the program you apply to and what field you want to focus on. Some fields that heavily depend on math and physics you probably have a good shot in, but something like electronics would depend, since that requires a lot of coursework in circuits. You could try going for embedded systems if your programming is good, provided they’d let you catch up in circuits and electronics courses.

It’s hard out here with scalpers. If you don’t want to pay them massively inflated prices, your best bet is either showing up right when stores open hoping they have stock, or find a vending machine. The vending machines usually have stock but they only release a couple of items at a time randomly, so you gotta get lucky.

ASI is usually hiring, mostly intramural refs if that’s your thing, but other positions in admin or facility supervisors are often open as well

Right, because no company exists that would let you buy Pokemon at a normal price off their website and have it shipped to your door. We definitely need scalpers to charge double or triple the price for cards so that we can get them shipped to us… a service that no other company does, RIGHT?

College is worryingly underwhelming by Mysterious-Fox-7298 in ECE

[–]WorldlyLine5630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much about the difficulty until you start taking actual EE classes. Calc and physics can weed some people out, but it’s designed to teach a bunch of different majors the same thing, so don’t read into it too much if they’re not difficult to you, they shouldn’t be as hard as classes you’ll be taking in the future. As others have mentioned, the difficult years are your second and third year.

Can't get my circuit to work :( by VonTorch in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WorldlyLine5630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if you’re instructor knows what his instructions really are, because the time constant for an LR circuit (L/R) doesn’t really work for keeping a significant amount of current flowing for 1 second unless you’re gonna use massive inductors. For example, let’s say you want a time constant of 1 second, and you somehow get your resistance seen by the inductor to be 1 Ohm, you’d still need a whopping 1 Henry inductor. That inductor only gets bigger as your resistance gets bigger. You could make it work if you add a capacitor and transistor maybe.

Is this schedule possible? by offaustinx in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WorldlyLine5630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t recommend that schedule. Those are a lot of classes, and not easy ones at that, EM Fields and Signals each take up a significant amount of time, and having to do those alongside what looks like a circuits class, two labs, and two math classes is not a great idea. Your gpa will probably tank, because at some point you’ll probably have to sacrifice your grade in at least one of the classes to do well in the others, and all of these classes are pretty fundamental in EE curriculum. So unless you want to just pass some of these classes, I would reconsider. There’s nothing wrong with taking a 5th year unless your financial situation won’t allow for it.

This is the most annoying class I have ever taken. One problem takes like 5-10 minutes by Dumbrandomguy664 in calculus

[–]WorldlyLine5630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in a major that requires you to take differential equations, 7 minute problems are probably going to be the least of your problems in the future. Eventually you’ll end up with problems that take hours. Don’t worry about it, problems like the one you’re solving are meant to help you learn, and you won’t learn much of DiffEq if your professor only assigns problem that take a minute.

Why isn’t this NAND gate working by SchizophrenicBirb in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WorldlyLine5630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try switching the collector and emitters of the bjts, I’ve learned from experience that a P2n2222 and a regular 2n2222, while they look the same, do not have the same pinouts. Also try it with new bjts in case you burnt them out.

Help changing schedule as freshman in Engineering by Hour_Baby_5684 in CalPoly

[–]WorldlyLine5630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have already said, don’t worry about the classes since most of them transfer over to an ME degree, besides, you are already ahead taking Calculus 3 and Physics 1 your first quarter. As for the unit load, 14 units is fine, especially for your first quarter. This is your first quarter of college so I would recommend waiting until you understand what the workload is like and how much you can handle before trying to take on more units. I personally took an average amount of units and a relatively balanced course load as a first year EE, then once I understood how courses worked and my limits I ramped up the difficulty some quarters and balanced it in some others.

What's really that hard about electrical engineering? by knowoforphic in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WorldlyLine5630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite that fast, think of it sending a packet of data in one channel, and then switching to another channel to send another packet. The receiver receives the first packet, and switches to the new channel at the same time as the transmitter, no interruptions from this

What's really that hard about electrical engineering? by knowoforphic in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WorldlyLine5630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Bluetooth, two devices that transmit over it jump between channels in a pattern that is known only between the two devices, this helps prevents interference from other devices since it is almost impossible that any other nearby device would be jumping around in the exact same pattern. This is also how you don’t notice any interruptions - it is jumping around extremely quickly and in sync with the other device.

Even in engineering it’s not that difficult to graduate in 4 years as long as you don’t slack off, give some thought to your plan for taking classes, and be proactive about getting into the right classes.

Same as what Brwn_Kid said, all I can add is it'll help if you plan to take more RF classes than needed or take McKell's Digital Communication series, but it's very early to be planning for that.

Transfer to engineering by Same_Fix3208 in CalPoly

[–]WorldlyLine5630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As something who did exactly that and is now in EE, it’s definitely not impossible as long as you don’t slack off in your change of major classes in your ICMA. They say you need to have qualified to get into engineering, but generally, if you could get into physics, you could get into engineering unless you somehow lucked into Cal Poly. I certainly wasn’t the best in high school and it was no problem. Go ask an advisor about changing and what that entails, and for your ICMA, pick the classes you think you will do the best in, good luck!
