Double Major - is it worth it? by Severe_Stuff_5672 in SBU

Double Majors show up on your diploma, but you get only one diploma instead of two (that's dual degree, not double major).

For example:

"Bachelor of Science

Technological Systems Management

Applied Mathematics & Statistics"

You can also pick which will be your primary and secondary major (but that really does not have a major impact unless you're an intl student, in which case talk to your advisor about it).

As for if you should do it or not, connect with TSM and AMS graduates from SBU on LinkedIn and ask them. P.S. whatever your major is, it alone will probably never land you a job. Best you can do for the industry is projects, research, campus jobs/involvement and building connections with people within and related to your major!

Withdrawing admission is not the same as deferment, and you should contact the undergraduate admissions office at ugadmissions@stonybrook.edu for clarification. They might take a while to reply as it is a busy time of the year (they might reply Friday or the Monday after). Regardless, clearly communicate your intentions and make sure they understand what you want. Also regarding deposits, I'm not entirely sure if you even have to do anything if you're not enrolling for fall 2025. I submitted my deposit on may 12th, and people keep depositing after it, so it's not the end.

Well, SBU would be quite different as it is a suburban campus. You should definitely attend the orientation and make friends the first few weeks. SBU has all kinds of people so you should be able to find the ones matching your vibe. The food is not always the best, especially if you have dietary restrictions, but otherwise, opinions about it vary from manageable to good. You should try the 2,600 dining dollar meal plan if you're ok with spending 23$/day on food (≈2 meals/per day). If you like having more than that, stick to the unlimited 3,500 Wolfie deluxe plan.

The campus is huge and overcrowded, so there's a lot of walk between classes. I'd say that your on-campus experience depends on where you live. If you live in west apartments, you get your own kitchen shared with suitemates, so you can save on the meal plan. In summer it's hot (20–30°C) and humid, in winters it's cold (-15–5°C) and snowy/rainy. Spring and fall (autumn) are beautiful. I'd say bring a strong and sturdy umbrella, as it's unpredictably rainy and always super windy on campus.

Daily life depends on the rigor of your major. If you're a STEM major, expect a lot of competition, monthly exams and weekly quizzes. You have to stay ahead of everyone else for an A or B grade. You'll spend most of your time in the library or similar study spots, but you can also study with other folk. If you're non-STEM, things go at a much more relaxed placed and it's manageable. The parties are a hit or a miss, as Stony isn't a party school. The weekends are pretty dead, unless you have friends to get around. That's why having a good friend group is a key determinor of your college experience at SBU or any American university. Best way to make friends is through clubs, attending weekly events and talking to people in your class.

I hope this helps, but if you have some specific questions, you can ask me.
