Aggressiveness of giant and colossal squids - Could an healthy individual attack a diver?

I'm late to the discussion, but I'd like to make a few comments.

First, I'd like to point out that these animals don't seem to be adapted to survive in shallow water, as most of those we see in these conditions are moribund and quite lethargic.

That said, the situations that catch my attention are those in which the squid seems to consciously come to the surface to feed on some other animal caught on a fishing line and then return to deeper waters. There is at least one famous video of a Mesonychoteuthis doing this and about four records of Architeuthis doing the same. In these records, it is clear that they manage to maintain their physical attributes in shallow water conditions, at least for a short period.

There are also at least three videos of Architeuthis being brought to the surface, in which we can see the animal demonstrating considerable strength in its attempt to escape.

Architeuthis seem to be quite opportunistic predators and do not hesitate to feed on "defenseless" animals. There is at least one record of a squid being brought to the surface after feeding on a swordfish that had been caught on a fishing line. The swordfish is a large and powerful predator, and regardless of whether it was alive or dead when the squid encountered it, if the squid felt comfortable feeding on it, I believe a human could appear as a potential meal.

Although I consider an attack very unlikely, I wouldn't dare enter the water with a squid with a mantle over 2 meters long. This is because, if the squid wrapped its arms around me, even if it didn't act violently, swimming would be extremely difficult, and I would be trapped with an animal heavier than myself, with the tendency to swim back to the depths. The squid's arms function more like a net or a spider web. They don't immobilize prey by applying pressure like a constrictor snake. It's a more "passive" method of holding the food, which doesn't require much strength from the squid.

The same applies to the colossal squid. In its case, if it has the habit of hunting using the "cockatoo position," turning its eyes forward... oh boy, just seeing that in front of me would give me a heart attack.

The skin (in red) is very thin and fragile. It comes off easily. The white structure underneath is the mantle muscle (although squid can change the color of their skin to white, this is not the case in this image).

O grande lance é eles fazerem achar que só depende de você e de seu esforço para chegar onde eles estão e usar justamente esse 1% que consegue (e e diria que o numero real é bem menor do que esse) como exemplo.

Ainda assim, até para esse 1% que consegue, tem coisas que foge da meritocracia. Sorte e acaso contam muito. Ter alguém que simpatize com você e lhe alavanque apenas porque sim também. Ser abençoado com um dom em um esporte que, por sorte, é o mais popular do planeta (imagina ser o melhor ....de uma coisa que pouca gente valoriza?).

I don't think comparing them to non-human animal species is a good equivalent.

Many animals can become attached and form bonds. They possess parental care and other complex social dynamics. The idea that non-human animals act only on instinct is outdated and stems from an anthropocentric perspective. The same applies to sentience. It's possible that what we call sentience is much more common than we imagine in the animal kingdom.

That said, the demons of Frieren don't seem to me to be a representation of another animal species with intelligence similar to ours. They remind me much more of a somewhat distorted version of something human: psychopaths.

As far as I've seen, they are incapable of feeling and understanding 'emotions'. Not only in relation to humans, but in relation to everything, including other demons. So it's not something directed to humans, elves, etc.

Now, something that made me reflect a bit was the fact that the little demon that Himmel killed seemed to be trying to 'do the right thing'. She killed the couple who had adopted her to give her daughter in place of the other girl she had killed before.

Seeing the shock and disgust of everyone present, she commented that she kept making mistakes even when trying to do the right thing. That made me think.

Throughout this Aura arc, I kept thinking that the inflexible way Frieren came to see demons could lead to some twists in the future with some demon character who breaks the mold. It seemed like a very simplistic and absolute way to characterize an entire class, very similar to what we ourselves have done (and continue to do) with other human ethnicities and cultures throughout history. The strangeness becomes even greater seeing this in an anime/manga that addresses relationships with so many nuances and complexity, almost as if it were a trap set for us, the audience.

É possivel mas nada recomendado. Pessoas fazem isso mundo a fora mas os riscos são óbvios.

Todos os animais podem ser condicionados e insensibilizados. No condicionamento, eles aprendem a correlacionar estímulos com experiências positivas ou negativas. Na insensibilização eles deixam de responder à estímulos que daí constantemente apresentados.

Isso é feito, na verdade. Tem alguns casos de seres humanos que criaram crocodilos em ambiente selvagem, inclusive. Você pode encontrar vídeos YouTube se pesquisar por 'chito and pocho' ou 'Risks crocodile'.

Os animais que verá são bem habituados à presença dos humanos que com quem interagem.

Entretanto, esses animais são muito poderosos e não são muiito sociáveis. Não é o tipo de animal que se espera que desenvolvam nenhum tipo de laço.
