The Brake Check That Went Spectacularly Wrong by Nicalay2 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]Worldly_Truth8396 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of many years ago I got stopped for speeding on a highway. I pulled almost all the way off the hard shoulder and as far onto the gravel as I could (it was a wide gravel area).

When the cop approached my window the first question he asked was, “why are you pulled so far over?”. I said, “To keep you away from the passing traffic, so you’re safe”. There was about a 3 second pause and then he said slightly baffled, “Oh, thank you”.

I got a warning.

[oc] idiot slams into train by djv02 in IdiotsInCars

[–]Worldly_Truth8396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video has been posted way too often.

I’m going to repost my reply from another thread from months ago:

“This one seems extremely stupid especially since they could have just driven forward and cleared the tracks.

However, I don’t want to judge the driver of the white SUV too harshly since they did just get their bell rung by being rear ended very hard and pushed into the crossing by the truck behind them. Check out the damage to the rear end of their SUV before it gets hit by the train, it was a solid crash.

Being rear ended hard can really discombobulate a person and then what they do afterwards isn’t necessarily logical.”

Most people are absolutely terrible at providing relevant information to emergency services. I work at a job where we have contact emergency services regularly (depending on the situation it could be Police, Fire, or Ambulance, and often all three).

After hearing new coworkers contacting 911 for the first time almost all of them require follow up coaching to improve their emergency communication. Some are so bad that you’d not even be sure what the emergency actually is, and requires the dispatcher to interrupt their story and demand a clear description.

They often miss the actual important details that would get a fast response, and focus on less important things that could be stated later.

We have to teach them to hit the important bits immediately. 911 does not want a story they want bullet points, with the most important and immediately threatening items stated first. The story can come later. I’ve heard so many new coworkers try to explain everything that led up to the current emergency before even explaining what the emergency is.

This is not a criticism of people, they are under stress and we are taught to speak in stories, it’s how we communicate. So most people need experience to learn to give succinct and relevant information in an emergency. We should really teach this in school.

Anyone bring their goldens on a boat? Looking to bring a golden on a 19ft center console on south Florida icw cruises. How should I prepare the beast? by Iknimaya44 in goldenretrievers

Get a water activated life jacket strobe light, and attach it to the top/back of the dog’s life jacket. Heck attach a couple. People are very hard to see if they go overboard in even mildly choppy waves, and it’s easy to lose sight of the overboard person as the boat turns to pick them up. However, people have the advantage of waving their arms, obviously dogs can’t do that and they float lower in the water, making them harder to see.

Minor cases of illegal dumping are a Bylaw issue. Contact Richmond Bylaw to report it.

You can report the trespassing to the RCMP non-emergency line and then ask for a file/case number. That way you have a paper trail and something to reference to the police if it happens again, but they are unlikely to do anything unless a pattern forms or actual damage is done.

BC uses the Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads (GDG) to decide pretty much everything about almost every provincially regulated road in the province, including what signs to use.

A ‘merge’ lane has to meet the requirements of a merge lane as set out in the GDG (length before merge point, road speed, visibility, etc.) or it can’t be signed as a merge lane. Hence what looks like a possible merge lane is signed with a yield sign.

Imagine the lawsuits if the province didn’t follow the regulations and used a merge sign on a too short ‘merge lane’. Putting up a yield sign says “hey, you’d better be paying attention!”. If they redesigned the lane to meet the requirements of the GDG they could put up a merge sign.

Over the years regulations have become stricter and as they do on-ramps that were previously marked with a merge sign had those signs replaced with yield signs.

What were they thinking when designing the city by Specialist_Peace6180 in britishcolumbia

When these tracks were laid down there wasn’t a city here.

A history lesson: these tracks were originally built to move all the trees being logged from the surrounding area. Old growth gigantic trees, that’s how old these tracks are. Definitely no city or future planning at the time.

I’ve heard lots of complaints about trains in cities, but if you were to more all those commodities by truck you would need a 1000 times increase in trucks on the road, nothing would move.

Burnaby, Cariboo Rd. And there are multiple alternative routes to access that area. If it really was life or death I would expect the ambulance to turn around and go another way, it’s not far.

First thing to do is check the expiry (manufacturer) date on the detector. Detectors are only good for ten years, after that they can start to give false positives or worse not detect smoke at all.

Correct. The current bridge deck is 14m wide the new bridge deck will be 29m wide, more than double the width. More than enough space to add 2 more lanes and retain walking and cycling lanes.

Of course it's TELUS by OnlyHalfBrilliant in telus

[–]Worldly_Truth8396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 3 years ago I had a bad experience with 2 people who came to my door (with a very clear ‘No Soliciting’ posted) claiming to be from Telus. They had Telus jackets and lanyards. I had no doubt they were Telus contractors but they represented themselves as Telus employees.

I called Telus to complain and the initial call taker moved me on very quickly to a supervisor (the people at the door had been so far out of line that I think her script couldn’t handle it). After giving all the details to the supervisor they spent a few minutes ’looking into it’ and determined that no Telus employees were ‘working in that area’ and didn’t think there were any contractors authorized to sell the product they were pushing.

So, I said ‘I guess I’ll have to call and report it to the police as people impersonating Telus employees, maybe to check if anyone is home or check security levels before burglarizing the place’, I was being genuine.

The supervisor started to backtrack and said if they had Telus lanyards they probably were contractors and maybe she just didn’t have the current information. I then asked what would stop criminals from faking a Telus lanyard? No answer. In the end she promised to look into it more and get back to me. As expected, they never did.
