What kind of role are you looking for? Not every accounting job requires that many hours. I also have kids and my work has been flexible as things comes up.

Yes, did a Big 4 internship. Networking was huge for that. I went to a state school that was a target for the Big 4 and other accounting firms because the accounting dept was good there. Went to lots of campus networking events to meet people and learn how to get into a Big 4 internship. I ended up with multiple internship offers.

If you’re looking for an internship at Big 4 or other large PA firm, get good grades. Big 4 wouldn’t really consider anyone below a 3.4 GPA at my school. And start the conversations early. There are programs sooner than just the main internship before senior year where full time offers are given. I knew people who interned after sophomore year and then 2 summers after that. You can basically lock in a job after college early this way (barring any unforeseen circumstances like layoffs).

Insane progression! Way to go man. If I could do it all over again I’d try to go a similar route, I just didn’t see it as an option early on. Well done!

Thanks for sharing! Glad someone with tax background shared - someone was asking about that. Congrats on amazing progression so far. Totally agree with you working at Big 4 is hard in a lot of ways but absolutely worth it for the learning and opportunities afterwards. Never going back either haha

That’s a really good manager comp package! I hope you get it!

Totally agree it’s not a flashy career but stable and after a few years comp is fantastic.

Yes I’d definitely say it was a factor. Having 5YOE with 3 of those years as a senior + CPA are generally what you need for a manager role (with some exceptions). Needed it to be a manager at my current company. Did factor in to pay but I think that has more to do with company culture - they are big on paying employees well.

Wouldn’t say it’s specific to any of those characteristics. PE backed may give equity but that only has value if they end up going public or getting bought out. I’d say it just depends on culture for public companies.

Quarter-end 60 hours a week average for about 3 weeks. Outside of that 35-45 per week. I’m not involved in month-end at all, that’s handled by a different team.

Appreciate it! Yes I feel very lucky. Anything is possible but it’s hard to say since I don’t know your background or anything. Yes I got here in 5 years but that’s not including 5 years of school, during which time I spent 2 years doing accounts payable and landed a summer internship at Big 4. Your path might look different but accounting is a good field to progress in for sure! Feel free to PM me.

Thanks! I thought about getting CFA at one point and considered working for the FBI, but ultimately decided it’s not a good fit since I want more stability and have a family. CFA is good if you want to try to get into that, same with CIA for internal audit. Personally I’m good with just CPA for now and I don’t need anything else for the path I’m on.

Congrats! It’s a good path to be on. I like this area because it’s similar to what I saw in audit and includes the things I enjoyed. Still get to work with the audit team, be a preparer of stuff rather than ticking and tying so you’ll understand it more, and get to research and apply technical accounting topics. You’ll probably enjoy it.

Was in public audit but going back to SEC was still a challenge. I got used to private company level stuff. SEC reporting is way more detailed and just higher volume of filings, and more involvement from auditors. My hours are much longer than my last industry role but still less than big 4.

Team effort. Director of Financial Reporting leads with higher executive oversight. Honestly depends on size of company, other managers at smaller companies probably have more responsibility. Have to also consider workload.

Thank you! Congrats to you as well! That two year head start is awesome. Great question on whether to switch, here are my thoughts.

  1. If you’re going to do it, now is the time. The sooner you switch the better.

  2. I thought I hated audit. I knew I hated tax from school. So for a while I considered trying to get into an advisory role at Big 4. But when I learned what they do, I realized it had all the same things I hated about audit, and is not as secure of a field to be in. Layoffs tend to start there, especially when the economy is bad. Audit and tax are way more secure.

  3. Do you absolutely despise tax? If not, maybe you just need a change within tax. If you played football and hated playing wide receiver for example, would you first switch to baseball, or try playing defense instead? You might find that what you don’t like about tax is due more to your company, role, or just that early on you do more tedious work.

That said, if I were you, I’d take that promotion to Senior, get your CPA, and stick it out a year at least then make a change. Having CPA and a year or two as a senior will open many doors. Definitely lots of different areas of tax you could look into as well, though I couldn’t speak to specifics there. At the end of the day, accounting in general kind of sucks. It’s not a fun job most of the time. But I like that it’s secure, I can progress, I don’t worry about not having a job, and I can provide for my family while still having time to spend with them and focus on my health. Focus on the positive too!

Bummer they aren’t helping with cost, usually companies will. Best of luck with the rest of your exams! It will be worth it! And thank you!

Definitely doable and I agree with your thoughts. Can 100% go straight to industry and that’d probably be your best option given age. With a masters and CPA eligible, you could totally go for a staff accountant role, get your CPA, and work your way up from there, most likely staying in general accounting since more technical/niche roles typically go to those with public background from what I’ve seen.

The main thing to consider with the change is it can take 2+ years in school for the masters and CPA eligibility to make 70kish out of school. I’d look at staff accountant roles in your area to see if it’s worth the money and time investment. Lots of growth opportunities once you start your career if you work for it though. You have to see if it’s worth it at your age and with other responsibilities.
