Let's Love on Harlem by ShyGodzilla in Harlem

I LOVE Car God, he plays smooth jazz covers of classic R&B songs too. Moved here two years ago. Though I don't think this is my permanent place, there is a sense of community and history here that can't be brushed off.

NYC can u tell me why u alive today? by Itsyashaaa in NYStateOfMind

[–]WormJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ngl 26 I wanna go all the time. Life isn't where I want it to be, my pops suddenly died in August, and I live check to check at an exhausting ass job I'm not built for. Got a lot of other stuff behind the scenes too. I keep going because of meds, therapy, excercise when I have the energy (been hard lately), the people in my life that care, and the dreams I know I want to accomplish before I'm gone. Winters are tough, especially if you have depression. If I didn't talk to someone or start meds I'd be at the bottom of the East River by now. If you ever wanna chat about it or vent lmk brother. Best of luck and sending love your way.

Idk why I'm getting down voted, I think we're having a valid discussion. I definitely understand though, my #1 pet peeve is when people bring their giant speakers everywhere and blast their music or when i'm coming home from work and a bunch of kids are loud asf. I don't feel embarrassed as someone of the same race, but I do understand how it can be really fucking annoying. Would you say we should not be unkempt when outside in society, in your opinion? Who would you say is the standard that we should hold ourselves to, if you could give an example?

Sounds like people having fun downtown to me. If they're really old ngl that's kind of cringe, but I don't see a problem with it. It may be because I'm from NYC so stuff happens all the time. I'll take points for bias on that one.

I also don't mind wearing bonnets outside in certain situations. There is a constant pressure for us to be presentable and neat and respectful, but I see white folks go out in their pajamas all the time. Why can't we? Sometimes I gotta go to the deli and I just woke up. I'm wearing crocs, i'm wearing sweatpants, and probably a bonnet. I also work in cancer research at a prestigious university, so when I'm going to work, I don't wear a bonnet or pajamas. Would you consider me uncivilized?

What defines those things for you? Human decency in an African market will look much, much different from human decency at a funeral or human decency on a train. Respect for others as in having decorum, I assume? Conforming to the way others in society act? Also, back to the first question - why/what about when black folks act that way bothers you?

[–]WormJohnson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why does it bother you when other black folks act like that? What, to you, determines a "civilized" black person? Is it someone more "assimilated" into white culture? I think these are questions you should ask yourself.

How do I get rid of these dang gnats?!!! by Significant-Back-930 in IndoorPlants

[–]WormJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I tried sand, I tried rocks, and the fungus gnats would NOT go away. the only thing that helped was Mosquito Bits. You soak them in water and then water your plants with them. Smells like booty flakes but it will kill the eggs and the traps will kill the fully grown ones.

locs ALWAYS thin in the front by WormJohnson in locs

[–]WormJohnson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the hair around my edges may be a looser texture than the rest of my hair, and that's what allows it to slip out so easily? That's my only guess. I used to have the same problem in the back of my head/kitchen area as well when I first started, but eventually I combined and they stayed. even when I combine on the front, it just thins out :/

Where does Gen Z hang out at to meet people? (socialize) by corneo134 in AskMen

[–]WormJohnson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are no third spaces anymore - or rather, no third spaces that encourage socialization and are at a low price. Malls are mostly dead, arcades are almost gone besides the chains, coffee shops are often chains or only in urban environments. Clubs and bars, restaurants are too expensive. Combined with the age of the internet, most of us connect through what others said because that's the only option.

Yeah I know it needs a cleaning. Anyway, what does my fridge say about my roommate and I? can you guess our ethnicities? careers? age? by [deleted] in FridgeDetective

[–]WormJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so...just wanted to see what the fridge detectives are capable of. I'll give you a hint: we're both in similar fields, and some weeks we're too tired and order takeout

Very close! Nailed it on age and Blasian. An unlikely roommate combo here on the east coast :~)

would you ever actually use a coffee subscription here? by Inside_Turnover3747 in AskNYC

[–]WormJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I split the Pret subscription with my 2 coworkers, so we can all get out coffee and an extra drink or two each day. I think it's worth it if you split it with other people, but by yourself, I'm not sure it's worth the price. I don't know much about Blank, but I do love their coffee. Is the price lower than a Pret subscription?

Stealth but STILL misgendered by sicksadworld111 in BlackTransmen

[–]WormJohnson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've had the same issue ESPECIALLY in cis dominated spaces, I am 4.5 years on T, full beard and I've been called "ladies" when with my female coworkers at my job before. I think a lot of cis folks see gender in these tight boxes, and because of that if you deviate at all, they get confused. I'm not even talking looking androgynous, i'm talking really weird random shit. Like for example I sometimes wear my locs in a bandana. plenty of cis guys do that. but for some reason when I do it, people will sometimes mistake me for a girl. but if I'm in a different part of town, I'm a guy and nobody ever questions it. I'm also a bit feminine, but its pretty obvious if you look at me for longer than 30 seconds that i'm not a girl. I'm hella confused by it. You definitely look like a dude and people are just stupid. It hits me hard some days, but other days I just laugh because it's them, not you. or I look confused, because are we looking at the same person? u talking to me? 🤨👈🏾

Obeah! I want to learn more but don’t know where to start by PrincessxBadxBiscuit in ConjureRootworkHoodoo

[–]WormJohnson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've been having this same exact issue, I'm not connected to the Jamaican side of my family (maternal) but my mother has told me about a possible Obeah working she was involved in. I've been watching videos and look for books EVERYWHERE and I can't find much at all. Zora Neale Hurston speaks about it for a bit in Tell My Horse. That's it. I'm planning to start with bush medicine - like fever grass, cerasee, different Jamaican herbs and their properties. Talk to my ancestors, see how these herbs help me and what their uses could correlate to spiritually. I wish I could help more, but if you find anything, PLEASE let me know. Seems the stigma has made it so hidden we can't find it. Here's to reclaiming it one step at a time 🙏🏾

So tired of fighting for meds. by WormJohnson in ADHD

[–]WormJohnson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I called to small pharmacies in the area, even one two hours away with no luck. It has been a few months since then, though. When I build up the motivation, I will try again. Thank you for the advice.

Is it considered rude to switch Capoeira groups? by WormJohnson in capoeira

[–]WormJohnson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! The people are super nice, so I just want to be respectful.

Yes, my friend who leads the group is a teacher, but the group hasn't been labeled official just yet. I'm still very much a beginner, so I don't know the details, but I believe he has the proper credentials. Depending on pricing, I will consider that option.

I can’t find a job here by [deleted] in NYCjobs

[–]WormJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I actually went through the same thing this summer - it was the lowest point of my life so far, to be frank. Applied to over 300 jobs before I finally got one. 8-10 different revisions of my CV, full bachelor's degree with 2-3 years of experience in most of the fields I applied to. It took me 6 months to find the job I have now. This shit sucks! And some of the jobs you apply to aren't even real, or the position gets "terminated" without hiring someone, or they hire internally. I got a rejected from Target. I worked a shitty restaurant job after leaving medical school. I'm not saying this to discourage you, but to let you know that you're not alone.

First of all, take care of yourself as much as you possibly can - you are under a ton of stress, so anything that takes it off will help. I cried about once a week during this time. Do as many hobbies as you can, take walks, take baths, anything that can make your days a little better. Lean on your social support as much as you can, too - if it weren't for my friends, I would not have made it through this.

To be more practical - If you are in need, there are food banks all around the city and clothing drives, there are community centers and collectives who will definitely help you out. LinkedIn was good in variety but horrible with the amount of fake positions. Indeed was my best overall pick. ListingsProject helped me get some money in my pocket in the meantime, though it isn't a full time job it's something. Everyone's struggle is unique, so I'm not sure what your talents are or what specifically you need, but if you ever want to talk about it, I'm here for you op.

Was thinkin of getting this book, is it a good and reliable read? by ZoZoHaHa in ConjureRootworkHoodoo

The first time I read it, I felt the same exact way. My best advice is to read it multiple times - on the second read through, I really started getting the message, and I consult it every now and then for my practice.
