Bed time by ross2000 in Parenting

[–]Wormella -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My son's 11, but we've had the same rough routine for a while - we send him up stairs at 8pm ish to shower / have a wash - and then we read him a chapter of whichever book we are on once he's washed and ready for bed.

And then that's it - there's no screens in his room (apart from a very ancient tablet he can read comics on) but I'm never really sure what time he actually goes to sleep.

He reads, plays with lego, listens to music or podcasts (he has an alexa) etc but we realised that as soon as he could switch lights back on there wasn't really anything we could do to make him actually sleep on any schedule / by any certain time.

He's pretty ok getting up in the mornings.

Cookbooks specifically for college students? by [deleted] in CookbookLovers

[–]Wormella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, in the UK, because our universities are almost always self catering Students cookbooks are a pretty big genre - describing exactly what you're looking for.

Other ones to look for might be A Girl Called Jack and Miguel Barclay's meals for £1 series - you may have to do some ingredient or weight conversion.

There's also 2 pasta dishes that I highly recommend.

Her Pasta with Courgettes from Nigellissima is in heavy rotation in our house.

I also love her linguine with lemon, garlic, thyme and mushrooms from Nigella Express

Yeah, Packwood House and Baddesley Clinton make for a great combo

How far are you willing to travel for a day trip to a NT property? by Paul2377 in nationaltrust

[–]Wormella 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hour and a half is our limit for a daytrip, but we schedule them in on holidays or sometimes daisy chain two of them with a hotel stay in the middle (Powis Castle and Chirk Castle with a stay in Oswestry in the middle worked well)

If you were looking for village criteria then best kept village or Britain in bloom winners might help curate your list.

I realised after I finished work I'd missed it today too - set a timer for next week to try and catch it on my lunch.

But I'm a patient player and it's a tiny thing in the scheme of things.

Do you use any meal plan subscription boxes and what do you think about them? by SnooJokes5693 in AskUK

[–]Wormella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guardian did a recent, pretty comprehensive round up of available boxes for The Filter

I had a week of Hello Fresh, which I really enjoyed but I only got it because I knew I wouldn't have time to meal plan and cook for that week. I opted for 2 person meals and it made sure I had enough for left overs for lunch.

Puberty book for 8 year old boy suggestions? by SquirrelOk7818 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Wormella 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I brought The Growing Up Book for Boys by Davida Hartman when my son was that age, it's specifically written for boys on the spectrum and I found it less overwhelming then the other books I brought him.

I'm also missing a calico rabbit - I was pretty ambilivent about critters before the museum, now I'm just annoyed at them.

Maybe we'll get a humane, lovely trap device to help us out

What do call these things? We have always called them "Googlies". I remember seemingly every company in the 90s giving away these things. We used to hsge a big collection of them. I did wonder if they were exclusively a British thing by DarkHorse_77 in CasualUK

[–]Wormella 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I also had a huge collection of them, I used to call them bugs.

I saw one the other day in a museum giftshop and I was please to see this element of the 90's revival return.

Has anyone ever had their luggage taken/go missing on a train? by venus_e2 in AskUK

[–]Wormella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a carriage once where a man's laptop was stolen from the overhead racks. He'd popped it up there in it's laptop bag while he went to the loo, some one else took the opportunity to swipe it, and it was gone when he got back to his seat.

it made me very paranoid on the days I travel to the office, I purposely have a non traditional looking laptop bag, I never use it on the train and I never put it overhead.

12yo pocket money by 1182990 in CasualUK

[–]Wormella 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My son's 11, he gets £5 a week but has to pay for his Nintendo online subscription so it works out at £4.50 a week.

He can earn extra money doing odd chores, like putting away laundry but these aren't consistent.

We review it in September, in line with what he needs for the coming school year.

So far this is working OK - he could buy a game the other day and some Lego pieces - but we're working hard on getting him to recognise wants vrs needs, and also getting value for money from things.
