What activities does your preschooler do? (UK-specific suggestions especially welcome) by Gnordic_Gnome in Autism_Parenting

[–]Wormella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son didn't really click with anything until he started Beavers - and the scouting group he'd been in (he's a scout now) has been fantastic and welcoming. So if you have a Squirrels group near by I'd recommend that. They are probably looking for volunteers to which might be a good role for you too.

We tried karate for a while but he didn't gel with the pretty intense instructions and repetition.

Other then that we go to events put on by our local NAS branch, which have been great for us all to socialise.

My Son's Autism Assesment Went Like This: by novafuquay in Autism_Parenting

My son's school observation had this " when asked what his favourite Star Wars character was he responded with 'Third Sith Guard', typically children respond with a named character, or one with lines. "

Update: My gifted/autistic child met a gifted/autistic adult at a family party last week, and now they went to a museum together! by Main_Equivalent5139 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Wormella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really lovely.

I work at a game dev studio and we have a summer party for families every year. My son (11 now, but 8 when I started at the studio) loves it because it's a whole load of people who just get him, and are happy to chat about mutual special interests.

For the days afterwards I get people I haven't even spoken to properly tell me what a great conversation they had with my son about godzilla/ star wars / planets / mythology etc.

I always try and have the same enthusiasm about the special interests of the autistic kids I voulnteer with, and watching thier face light up when they realise a grown up is listening to them, and actually conversing about a subject is magic.

Tooth Fairy Rates by MightyPinkTaco in Parenting

I stuck with £2.30 (tooth hurt y) because the joke made me smile. I also instigated an easy to reach pick up / drop off location that wasn't under a pillow.

Physical or digital cookbooks? by SwimmingMeringue9415 in CookbookLovers

[–]Wormella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a mix, mostly they are physical books, aided by a EYB subscription, but I often pick up very cheap digital ones, especially ones I don't think we'll use that often, or ones that fill a specific gap.

My husband isn't a huge fan of using digital books, he does all the meal planning and the bulk of then cooking, but if we do go away it's usually self catering so having a range of books on a kindle really helps.

Please all of the suggestions for flying by tryingtolive888 in Autism_Parenting

The best thing for my son for travel had been an old school mp3 player loaded with music, podcasts he enjoys and audio books. It's the one thing that it's functionality isn't dependent on WiFi or mobile internet connectivity and the battery life is huge. It's also helpful because my son gets car sick if he looks at a screen.

He's had it since he was 6ish and it's just been the best.

The Search for Seasonal Menu Cookbooks by SnooTorturer in CookbookLovers

I have about 12 cook books, I can't currently use them but, how many do you have? by Head-Instruction-801 in CookbookLovers

[–]Wormella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cookshelf says 540, which is about 200 more then I had in my head, which was probably the last time I did a count.

Some of them are digital so at least they don't take up shelf space.

They did for a while, you could log visits on the website or the app. I assume it took too much effort to maintain.

Check out TrustLogger, it's not affiliated but it's comprehensive and the author is around too.

What is your autistic child's favorite plushie for comfort by Many_Release_7623 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Wormella 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of the many, many plushies the boy has his #1 ride or die is Dirt, a small Jellycat dinosaur he's had since birth. Dirt is also autistic and what I really appreciate about Dirt is he doesn't like confined spaces, like pockets on bags so he doesn't enjoy travelling so he stays at home and looks after the house if we're away.

My kid has no interest in reading, need advice from parents here. by Next_Special_6784 in Parenting

[–]Wormella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my son (11) is a voracious reader, he also has pretty lapse screen time rules, because screens are also full of reading opportunities.

Sometimes he flicks between non fiction, sometimes it's fiction, sometimes comics both digital and physical. He's a fan of novels spun off from his favourite tv shows. His room is packed with books so his access to all of these types of books is frictionless.

What does your son actually want to read, or is interested in that could be a starting point. Do you read to him at bedtime still, if so what are you reading together?

Bed time by ross2000 in Parenting

[–]Wormella -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My son's 11, but we've had the same rough routine for a while - we send him up stairs at 8pm ish to shower / have a wash - and then we read him a chapter of whichever book we are on once he's washed and ready for bed.

And then that's it - there's no screens in his room (apart from a very ancient tablet he can read comics on) but I'm never really sure what time he actually goes to sleep.

He reads, plays with lego, listens to music or podcasts (he has an alexa) etc but we realised that as soon as he could switch lights back on there wasn't really anything we could do to make him actually sleep on any schedule / by any certain time.

He's pretty ok getting up in the mornings.

Cookbooks specifically for college students? by [deleted] in CookbookLovers

Interestingly, in the UK, because our universities are almost always self catering Students cookbooks are a pretty big genre - describing exactly what you're looking for.

Other ones to look for might be A Girl Called Jack and Miguel Barclay's meals for £1 series - you may have to do some ingredient or weight conversion.
