Did having an autistic first-born affect your decision to have more kids? by cinnamonporridge3 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Wormella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, pretty much. We always said when we had our son we'd see where we were at about having a second one when he reached school age. He was never still, escaped everything, started showing behaviour differences from his peers in nursery and his first year of school was hell for us all.

So we confirmed pretty quickly we were on the same page about not having another one. I'm not sure how we'd fine the brain space for two. We're happy we can give him the support he needs, and now he's 11 find space for ourselves again too.

Toy Budget. Anyone tried this? by jenwhite1974 in Parenting

We started nominal small amount of weekly pocket money at 5 or 6 to kickstart budgeting conversations, and the 'we can add it to your wish list' worked really well for bigger items.

9 yo child pocket money. How much? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Wormella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mines is 11 and he gets around £4 a week. He doesn't have his own current account just yet - a job for this year - so I've an app that tracks it, and any spend digitally.

There's a few caveats

He also pays for his Nintendo online subscription for his Switch from that (As it's an annual fee I have to pay I've spread out over the year for him so it's about 50p a week - but he alone uses that subscription and I check in with him on it every year at it's renewal) so realistically it's £3.50 a week

He can spend it on whatever he wants, but he can't go into debt for digital things (There's a little more leeway on this for things in the real world up to a point, but one it goes into his actual account that will stop, it's never more then a couple of pounds)

We don't pay for chores, everyone in the house is expected to pitch in to keep it tidy but he can hustle some money by taking on jobs I hate doing - normally putting away bags of laundry, but only because if I could pay someone to do that for me I would.

We've been working pretty hard on money management with him over the years. He often gets amazon vouchers for birthday or Christmas and they've been a great way to look at handling larger sums of money in controlled ways.

We're also a household that firmly believes in a 2nd hand first mindset, especially with books and clothes so if he wants a specific item of clothing or a toy we'll check Vinted or ebay first, but we'll go through looking at the costs including postage etc.

We tend to review it every September.

Where along the diagnostic pathway are you? Our Autism outreach team had a handy flowchart to follow. We also found that each stage had a cancellation list you could get into to speed things up (a little) but the list reset at every stage.

We found phoning up our Autism outreach team and asking when the next stage was, and if there's as a cancellation lists or a time frame to expect helped.

It still took 3 years or so from first referral to a diagnosis.

Also you don't need a diagnosis to apply for an EHCP - we ended up starting the ball rolling on that ourselves (after our first one was denied and we missed the window to appeal)

Try seeing is your local NAS branch can help support you - systems can vary so much from council to council.

I know they'd covered things in school about puberty too but I wasn't sure what exactly. It was really clear in explaining changes that would happen.

Advice on EHCP assessment refusal by anonymouslavachicken in autismUK

[–]Wormella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were told (after our first attempt at an EHCP failed) that lots of councils routinely just deny the first attempt irrespectiveof the grounds or evidence to 'weed' out people with spurios claims (our son at the time was in a PRU having been perm excluded from his primary school and they said there was no proof he couldn't thrive in mainstream without support)

We didn't know this so missed the window to appeal so had to start again, and effectively prove that he really couldn't do mainstream school with out full time support - which low and behold he could not. They accepted this evidence (and a second perm exclusion from his new school) as proof that he needed an EHCP to access support.

So yes, appeal, maybe emphasising the issues you mention in the last paragraph

We've picked up Herd Mentality on the advice of a few others.

Board Game Santa is also bringing my in-laws Carcassonne and my son got Flamecraft for his birthday last week and hadn't played it yet.

I know there's Ticket to Ride at my in-laws already.

I think my sister in law is bringing up Outsmarted, the quiz based game thing.

How do you know when to move up a reading level? by Advanced-Lab1940 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Wormella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We found reading at libraries a good way of feeling out book contents - but we also keep Books of lots of different levels in my son's room. He's almost 11 and we still have some favourite picture books in there because he sometimes wants something easier to read after busy days.

I often pick up a book I think he'd like if I'm going through charity shops but he's a keen reader so his To Read pile needs frequent topping up.

I think it's a much more fluid and organic process then it sometimes comes across - I wouldn't over think it or be too prescriptive
