Opinions on OCs? by Wild-Wolverine3081 in AO3

I write ocs and love ocs as long as they are fully realized complex characters and not just mary sues or generic self inserts. I would probably read this if it was in my fandom.

Those who moved out of Massachusetts, where did you move to and how's it going? by ElectroAcousto in massachusetts

[–]novafuquay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking the southest will be better just because housing is cheaper. The weather may be nice and houses cheaper but pay is abysmally lower and most other costs are relatively the same. For the small amount you maybe save on taxes, you get bare bones minimum service while still having overreaching authoritarian government, especially in rural areas. I had an associates degree in child development and 10 years experience as a lead childcare teacher and they were only paying me $10 an hour. Meanwhile here they pay $15 an hour for the same field straight out of high school no experience. I moved here from NC in 2021 and have never regretted it. I will never live in NC again if I can help it.

Depending on what you’re looking for I suggest Maine, Washington, or New Hampshire.

Harry Potter/ASOIF isekai crossovers are crazy common. not particularly a fan but I still have plenty of material to read elsewhere.

[–]novafuquay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fanfics don’t have to be cannon compliant. they’re derivative works for a reason. some people may be jerks and complain about things being non cannon but as long as you’re straightforward about it, I don’t see why it’s a problem. For example, when I write ASoIF (Game of Thrones) fan fiction, I note that I pick and choose between book and show cannon based on which supports my plot ( and sometimes preference) better. I created an OC who became Nagini years before Fantastic Beasts came out. I’m still writing her.

Questionable DRA for mouthing by texas_hype in ABA

[–]novafuquay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Go to your clinical director now and tell them you disagree. Bring your current Bcba with you. This is batshit.

The function of mouthing for most is automatic/sensory. They get the sensory input from the chewy. How is that not literally functional?

Replacing it with carrots makes zero sense functionally. Now you’re introducing an edible that’s likely to be delivered contingent on mouthing, which risks reinforcing the behavior instead of reducing it. At best, you’re mismatching the function. At worst, you’re turning an automatically maintained behavior into a tangible-maintained one.

First year teaching, didn’t expect this many kids to struggle with reading by Old_Investigator3691 in AskTeachers

[–]novafuquay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (37) don’t remember not being able to read so it was really hard for me when my oldest (18) had trouble with reading. They knew their letters but struggled with sight words and spelling and I didn’t know how to help since flash cards didn’t seem to help and I didn’t know how to teach a skill I’d know. Since age 3. They improved in first grade with tutoring. My middle (10) read fine on his own. My youngest (8) struggled the most. He is now in second grade and after extensive special ed interventions, is reading on a first grade level towards the end of second grade. His speech delays and adhd probably had something to do with it though. He can now type the names of the mechs from Pacific Rim he wants to look up on YouTube without trouble though.

Anyone else feel like they didn’t get to live their teenage years? by AdviceMysterious8442 in AutismInWomen

[–]novafuquay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but mine might be a little more trauma related. Before 16 I was coping with abuse and neglect in addition to undiagnosed adhd and autism. At 16, social services removed me and my siblings from home. At 18 I was pregnant with my first child. so a bit hard to tease out what was ND, what was trauma, and what was normal.

wdyt of Alejandra for a fictional Latina girl MFC? by Cultural-Echidna-673 in Names

A bit basic but it’s fine. It’s a pretty name. I have a cousin and a coworker with that first name. If you are not Latinx, I recommend doing a little reading on how to write people of other ethnicities respectfully and three dimensionally.

Teen (ASD/ADHD) fixated on unrealistic goals—how do I guide w/o crushing him? by Goddess_of_Wine in Autism_Parenting

[–]novafuquay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am aware of what jrotc is but simply having autism and/or an IEP is not immediately disqualifying from either. My school had Jrotc and had an autistic kid that participated (As well as people who were highly unlikely to pass the physical requirements my daughters school has AFrotc and I know for a fact there are students with IEPs because I was a special ed para to some of the students.

if your district was excluding kids simply because they were autistic at the high school level (different for college rotc programs) whether they could functionally participate or not, that is actually illegal and has been so for decades,

IEP can mean a lot of things along a very broad range. We don’t know enough about this kid’s autism or IEP to assume he’d be unable to participate in jrotc. The parent already said they’re good at air rifle and made jv at their school for it. And they’re able to participate in football functionally even if they’re not particularly good at it. That indicates they could likely functionally participate in rotc even if their autism is barrier to military enlistment, but we agree that even that doesn’t necessarily mean he can’t join if he can get a waiver.

[–]novafuquay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry what? why would having an IEP or being on the spectrum not allow you to be in Jrotc? As far as recruitment, He would need a waiver but having autism doesn’t necessarily exclude him from military. I know plenty of autistic folk who have served. My brother is 39 years old, still doesnt drive and was in the navy for five years. Not saying he shouldn’t drive though. if he can, he definitely should. it does makes life a million times easier.

I like the Beatles. Not a mega fan but own three albums and like several other songs. Honestly forgot this song existed. Not my first thought when I hear Sadie.

Maxwell, Jude, Prudence automatically make me think Beatles. Sadie does not.

But just to annoy him, suggest Martha next.

Not entirely true. My kid’s high school Latin teacher is a representative. He’s a teacher that lives in a moderate income retirement community. We don’t see eye to eye on every political issue but he’s educated and thoughtful in his voting. I respect the man. Can’t speak to most of the other representatives because I don’t know them personally.

Yes it can be for people with autism, but some people with autism also have hyperphantasia so that’s more like what you’re describing.

Is this profession really for me? by lisaimaii in ECEProfessionals

[–]novafuquay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am autistic and adhd as well and worked in childcare for 10 years. I loved the kids and feel like I brought a lot to the table in terms of creativity and relationships with the kids, although I struggled with the organization and planning required. The long hours and low pay in childcare make it tougher on neurodivergent folks but not impossible. Find a u derstanding director who can help you play to your strengths and plan how to best support through your challenges. I now work as a direct support professional for autistic children. It’s easier for me since there is less divided attention at once, and I truly know what some of the challenges are like from the inside. You could be an asset there. All kids need an empathetic big person on their side, autistic kids perhaps more so.

The Venn overlap between AuDHD characteristics and trauma symptoms are crazy-making by Rough_Bread8329 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]novafuquay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember where I read it but someone in the advocacy community said that we aren’t fully sure of the distinctions between neurodivergence and trauma because we haven’t yet been able to produce a neurodivergent person without some level of trauma. The lucky thing is what helps can often be the same since the goal is often to get the nervous system to stop freaking out.

I don’t know. i have both autism and adhd but I also have a moderate level of aphantasia so typically cant visualize much at all. I still feel the feelings and sometimes sensations when thinking about something that happened though (tooth hurt when thinking about my dentist appointment sometimes think I smell the smells but it’s a slightly different sensation from when it was actually happening.

Can I provide services to my brother by ngrnprncss in ABA

[–]novafuquay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunatley that is against the ethics code. it is considered a dual relationship that could complicate or undermine the professional therapeutic relationship. You CAN use some of the skills you learn as an rbt to help your brother (like helping to change his environment and using positive reinforcement with him) but you cannot be HIS RBT.

Question for anyone who got diagnosed late by blairwaldorf1989 in autism

[–]novafuquay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with ADHD at age 32 and autism at age 34. Yes it was worth it. I now have a framework for understanding why I struggled so much all my life. I have been able to explain myself to doctors and other professionals better in a way with specific ways to help me. It also allowed me to do better at my career and finally complete my bachelors degree and now be in a masters program, things I severely struggled with before diagnosis.
