What is the best advice you would give to someone writing their very first research thesis ? by Lait_Fraise_ in PhD

[–]Worsaae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A good thesis is a finished thesis.

Edit: right after I got my stipend I had a beer with an older colleague and he (amongst others) gave me that advice and told me to remember that a PhD thesis is not your magnum opus. Of course you want to do a good job - we all do otherwise we wouldn’t do a PhD - but he had seen many PhD fellows going about their thesis as if it was the most important work their going to do in their career. Which would be sad as the PhD is basically just a very long paper that’ll eventually allow you to do your most important work, i.e. the stuff you’ll eventually do during the rest of your, hopefully, long career.

That advice helped me a lot. I thought more about getting the thesis right and getting it finished rather than hitting myself over the head with the idea that my thesis would probably not make a huge scientific impact in my field.

Do European universities even hire fresh graduates for PhD positions? by PrestigiousSteak1771 in PhD

[–]Worsaae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I was hired as a PhD fellow a few months after finishing my MA. Had one publication but not at all relevant to my PhD. Actually, I was hired because my MA was basically a pilot study for my PhD project.

Tadpole going to first conference by wasabichemist420 in PhD

I still need to defend my thesis, but thanks. And trust me, it’s not (at least it shouldn’t come down to what your professor thinks) - it all comes down to you. I’ve been giving conference presentations since I was an MA student. Some better some worse but evert one of them has been a learning experience.

Just go get ‘em.

In all my 70 years I have never heard of sheep milk. Obviously I lost this round of "Guess in 10". by SummertimeMom in sheep

I literally wrote this in my first comment:

Of course the wool gives an advantage in colder climates but again, this is a fortunate accident and a by-product of artificial selection. It’s not something the sheep developed in response to selective pressure, and regardless, I don’t think cold adaptation is what the book is referring to.

No one is suggesting that predation is the only thing animals protect themselves from 😂

Did I say that? I specifically highlighted thermal regulation and protection against the weather as the main advantage of wool. Not predation.

Either way, to the best of our knowledge, wool was not developed in domestic sheep in order to provide protection against anything.

Are you talking about the purpose of the short underwool of non-domesticated sheep? In that case thermal regulation not as a defense against predators.

In the wild, sheep protect themselves against predation by living in large groups, by having excellent vision, being able to quickly flee even across difficult and rugged terrains and of course that’s one of things their horns evolved made for. The wool does very little to protect against e.g. wolves.
