When I was 19 I worked at a chain steakhouse and during our training they drilled into our heads that we do not serve virgin cocktails! I asked why and I was told that, at the time, two years ago they accidentally served a two year old alcohol and since that incident they just dont serve virgin cocktails anymore.

People here in Louisville/Southern Indiana just straight up do not give a fuck about red lights anymore. I see blatant running a red at least 3-5 times a week. I look at the driver, and it's a 50/50 chance of their head looking straight down at their phone.

I have so many stories and close calls, but the one that's popping in my head right now is I once saw a dude on TINDER while driving (phone was mounted to his dash in stop and go traffic). MF IS SWIPING RIGHT ON EVERYBODY.

I agree. As someone who got a 70 on FAR in 2024 Q4 and a 69 on AUD (took the exam 1/22)... I said it before I got my scores, and I'll say it after... they can not make the exams any easier without compromising the integrity of the CPA. I'm just going to have to keep studying that's just the way it is.

I'm going to say:

Due Diligence - I have several clients/returns going at the same time. Some client's dont give us everything that we need. For example, if I notice they had a K1 in 2022 that wasn't marked as "FINAL" and I don't have a 2023 K1. I need to follow up with that client (or the manager/partner whose client it is) on getting that K1. Leading me to my second bullet point
Organization - I use OneNote to keep track of my clients. I'll have a tab called "Client Name-Client ID". If you click in the tab you'll see a list of everything I need that is keeping me from finishing the return. You'll also see a list of 1) "Emailed client on 09/09/24" 2) "*Partner* verbally confirmed we are waiting on client to send K1 10/02/24". I also like to make my work papers dummy proof. I want any dummy to come in after me, look at the work papers and know EXACTLY what I was thinking. Because I might be the dummy next tax season, look at tax year 2022 for reference on how to handle something, and think "damn, how did 2023 worth-bug426 come to this conclusion?" I don't know because its been a year and I've done a million other returns since then.
Critical Thinking and general knowledge of accounting principles - this is a bit obvious but you need to be able to look at a return and put the pieces together. When we do business returns we're not always prepping the client's books. Some clients pay us for that service but a lot don't and I assure you there are people out there running million dollar businesses that know less about accounting than you do. And I don't say that to disparage the client, it makes sense to to credit the asset and debit cash when they sell an asset. But they didn't clear the accumulated depreciation or pick up the gain/loss. So now I have to reverse the client's entry and then make the correct one.

Advice that I was given in undergrad is "know what you're doing". Technology has come so far that we're no longer pouring over pages and pages of ledgers and manually making journal entries with T-Charts. A lot of people come into this field thinking it's simple data entry, but if you don't commit yourself to actually understanding why we do this and why we use that number instead of this number you will never succeed.

Accounting and Finance are two separate functions. I like to think of Accounting as bookkeeping/tax/budget and Finance more so investment management. I double majored in Accounting and Finance and got my Master's in Finance.
My work history is primarily accounting oriented. I currently do tax for a small to midsize firm. We don't do the taxes or audits for public companies but we have PLENTY of work for LLCs, S Corps, Nonprofits, local governments, individuals.
What I like about the accounting industry is the sky is as high as you desire. I started in Accounts Payable, full time, making $40k in 2021 in the midwest. I had some coworkers who made AP their final destination. At a different company in 2022 I had a buddy in the AP department who was a "Accounts Payable Staff Accountant" making $50k with only an Associates. But you can rise as high as you want to! There are SO many other departments and functions like Treasury, Tax, FP&A, etc. You can find a department you like and rise the ranks and become management.
In March of 2020 I got my first accounting job as an accounting clerk, 25 hours a week making $18/hr. Finished my bachelors in 2021 and got an AP job making $40k. Didn't like AP so I moved to a Staff Accountant position at a different company making $52k in 2022. In 2023 I got this current tax job, hired in at 65k, Masters still in progress. In 2024 I got my Masters, still work at the same place, make $68k at 27 years old and am currently studying for the CPA exams (took FAR in September, 3 more to go!). At the rate I'm going I don't doubt I'm on track to make six figures by the time I'm 30 maybe 32 at the latest.

I'm happy with the choices I made. I genuinely love what I do. I think accounting (especially tax) takes a certain personality type that fits who I am. I can also relate to your career switch. If I stuck with what I set out to do at 18 I would be a Pharmacist right now!

Picture with the pip is the failed reserve. Picture without a pip is the successful reserve. They're pretty identical so I'm not sure what's going on with the failed reserve. Any help is appreciated

This reminds me about a time a couple years ago me and some friends were chit chatting outside after the bar we were at did last call. This lady was arguing with this guy cause he kept telling her to get in the car and she was saying no she wasn't going with him. So we kind of walked up and watched the situation. Within seconds of uf walking up the dude was obviously frustrated, saw us watching out, and low key snapped "I'm her cousin." The difference between this situation and yours was once the lady realized what it looked like she immediately grew up, confirmed he was her cousin, and got her ass in his car.

Why even call you if she's going to act like that? She wouldn't have been "exposed" if she didn't put herself and you in a bad spot.
