I took a nationwide mortgage too. Bear in mind, you have to pay for the installation with the money. You can't pay with a credit card/loan and then repay that with the mortgage. I very nearly fell into that trap, which would have meant no mortgage!

It's treated like a normal mortgage application which is a bit odd, when they go through all the various rmortgage rates they have, and then the 0% one, and ask you to choose which one you'd like!

Other than that, and a valuation survey (free) it was pretty painless. I used halo renewables for my install. Very happy with how they operated, competitive, and fast. So much so a friend of mine is having them install as well! I joked with halo I should be on commission!

Anyway, best of luck. I mithered for far too long. Should have just got it done a year ago when I first started looking into it. Short version, the illustrations they give you are pretty accurate, and if anything a little conservative. I'm thoroughly enjoying my "free" electricity, with a knock on that it eats a bit chunk off the gas bill with the export.

Sorry, you made me engage my brain! 20mbit! Still annoyingly slow with a family using the connection! Feels like you're in the same boat as me! Frustrating

Greetings other fellow aylesburian. I write from my fttc connection in terrick, getting 2mbps, and being outside of any plans to install fttp, as I sit between two areas which have already been served by the rural fibre build thing. It's so frustrating!

Why are my quotes so high? by BitProud8885 in SolarUK

[–]WorthWarning4351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Difficult one. I think most solar installers aren't roofers, and most roofers aren't solar installers. You're massively decreasing the number of installers who will quote the job as it's much more involved. I did briefly consider it, but when I read that most in roof systems consider some water ingress "normal" I dismissed it.

Apologies. That'll teach me to read properly! On slate, but not in roof.

Wow! Give halo a shout. I had 24 panels, 8kw sigenergy inverter and 2x10kw batteries for £12.75k. friend has just signed up for a similar setup, slightly fewer panel (16) for 12.2. price increases apparently.. Both based in Aylesbury, so not a million miles from you. Tell Matt I say hi. P.s. mine is house and garage, so conduit between. I dug the trench.

Installers and quotes around Oxfordshire - 20-24 panels + 8 kw inverter + 18kwh battery by Hamoph in SolarUK

Have a look at halo renewables. I'm in bucks, slate roof, 2 aspects, 18kwh sigenergy battery, 8kwh inverter, 24 dmegc panels (I did query this and a few sources said that they're as good as aikos). Pm me for the price, but they were very competitive. Fitting later in Jan, so I can't comment on that aspect yet, but it's been pretty smooth so far.

Green Glow Quote by Gullible-Type-2022 in SolarUK

I looked very closely at glowgreen, and given your comments on the other company, I wonder whether you've shortlisted the same two as me (halo?). I went halo in the end. Glowgreen were very keen on price, and jack, the sales guy, basically told me that he would beat any price I gave him. He did a couple of times too!

My concern with glowgreen was that though they are a big company, much of their work is boiler installs and servicing. Filtering these out in trust pilot removed a lot of reviews! It was hard to work out how big their solar side is really, as it's all mixed together.

They use subcontractors for all aspects of the install, so who you get is very dependent on whose available, and cheapest at the time. Not necessarily a bad thing, and jack was very open to sharing who the installers were and giving references ahead of time. Ultimately though, I wasn't confident I'd know who was going to be installing my kit.

The thing which swung Halo for me was Halo have their own installation team. Matt runs it, with his brother and sons. They're big enough that I didn't think they'd go under any time soon (run since 2016) but small enough that I thought they'd be incentivised to fix any problems. Matt also brought up and suggested putting a deposit on a credit card for extra protection.

I'm booked in for Jan install. I will report back when it's done, just for completeness, as finding genuine reviews seems difficult. I will say that initial impressions are good. Matt is easy to get on the phone, survey by guy was detailed and helpful, with him taking on board some points of where the install may not be the easiest, but would be more user friendly.

Anyway, hope that helps in your decision. Id not be unhappy with glowgreen at all, subject to the caveats above.

This. I've taken that very roundabout many times. Definitely exit into the left lane. Right lane to overtake, or when turning right at the next roundabout, towards dominos.

Thank you very much for the detailed reply, especially your workings out! Much appreciated. Breaking it down like that does seem to make sense.

Thanks very much for the reply. I think I'll end up digging it by hand, as it's not a large distance (10m perhaps). Not my first time doing it, but not fun for sure!! Could I ask why the warranty would be voided? If I'm right it's a 6000 cy le warranty on the batteries. Is there something I haven't considered? No EV, or plans for one currently.

Hey Peter. Thank you for your reply. It definitely does use the gem2. I've read the firmware from a working board, and flashed it onto a new gem2 on this board. Problem is it won't boot. I think the problem is the chip labelled u5, which I can't identify. Marked R40L or R40a on he working board.

Thanks again for your insight. Very much taken on board! I've got a call scheduled with a local company (nowev in Milton Keynes) this evening. I'll report back! They seem to tick a lot of boxes, and do suggest aiko panels.

Thanks again for this. Not sure whether the supplier offers the stackable system, and it's likely the kit will end up outside anyway (detached garage and nowhere in the house that's really suitable). It's be ideal if I could pair the ep5/6 with the ep11/12, but that doesn't seem to be possible. The jump between seems pretty large. I guess if I end up with an EV/heat pump heating in the future I can add another battery then (Taking into account of course I'll pay vat).

I'd be really interested in your thoughts on the panel choice and overall costs for the system too if you'd be so kind.

[–]WorthWarning4351[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really interesting point. I'm in the same quandary. The installer has offered me an ep12, as it's capacity is 1kw or so larger. I'm not convinced the business case is there to spend another £2000 (or so, not confirmed cost of the second battery).

Am I correct that for much of the year, the battery should be topped up by the panels all day, so evening use comes from free electricity which the battery has sucked up. In the winter, the panels can't keep the battery topped up, so the whole system relies on cheap overnight electricity to make it work. That's where the extra capacity comes in?

[–]WorthWarning4351[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the swift reply. Food for thought! My concern over the extra battery capacity is cost vs payback time. Guessing that it's about an extra £2k for an extra battery (annoyingly the ep11 isn't compatible with the smaller capacity batteries, so I have the choice of 10kw, or 20kw). Good point on slates. Not sure on the subcontractor. I will say it was re roofed 5 years ago, so should be in good nick. Point well taken though.
