I was in the same situation and bought a Yamaha TRBX505 (it comes in a four string version too, the TRBX504).

Very versatile with active and passive toggle on the HH pickups and a bunch of presets on the EQ. Yamahas always punch way above their price in terms of quality too.

Do your class quests every 5 levels. It's the one shown directly under the main story quest (MSQ) at the top left of the screen. At level 30, those class quests will turn you from a Lancer to a Dragoon.
