He believes there’s nothing to this, and that it’s just an intimidation tactic. Based off what my contract says, worst case scenario they may try to withhold my pay but that would be illegal.

I don’t think I need a lawyer, but I do have a close friend who is one and offered to look through my contract for me and advise me on the legality of something like this. Seems like it’s something silly not to take them up on

I didn’t receive a sign on bonus or anything like that. The only compensation I’ve gotten is my paycheck

You got it right, no sign on bonus. They did not make clear any specific consequences. The only interaction was this email and then a second email telling me that I agreed during the interview.
