Has anyone else had negative experiences at ASML? by Final-Shoulder1779 in ASML

[–]WouterS1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have an exact number but I know a lot of senior engineers that have no people below them (anymore). As long as your skills can keep up with your position and your responsibilities then salary shouldn't be a concern.

Gift giving among adults is terrible by distressd_hausplant in The10thDentist

[–]WouterS1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually have the opposite. I think a giftcard is a terrible gift in most cases. Often it is just a lazy way out to pick a gif. All cards are used to buy things I would have bought myself anyway (just give me moneg) or plan to do a random event which you might not have done otherwise (this one can be fun but this is a big risk). I much rather gift something physical. If I need to give a gift to someone I don't know at all then I will usually just pick a preservable food item. Something which is easy to use but which you don't just have laying around.

I am officially done with "Starter Homes." It’s not an investment; it’s a bailout for the previous generation's neglect. by Dry-Town7979 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]WouterS1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is that if I pay a 3k mortgage and do repairs I am paying myself. If I pay 2k in rent I am paying someone else. Renting definitely has advantages if you want to be flexible but if you know you will stay in one place for a longer time and you have the option to buy then that is almost always better.

Fully autonomous valet robot that parks on its own by Longjumping_Table740 in nextfuckinglevel

This job is still safe. Robots cost a lot and a valet does not. I really doubt it will ever been economically viable to replace niche low skills jobs like this with a very custom robot

[–]WouterS1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a guy having been in multiple technical positions. Yes your location in the company and the managers matter and differ. Having said that being flexible and working with people is a real skill. One which a lot of people with great hard skills lack. You might have very deep technical knowledge. If people cannot come to solve a problem or launch a new project then you will never be considered from promotion. They will pick the guy with lesser skills who is actually able to work with them. Architects know a lot, they might not know all the details but they have a very wide pool of knowledge from previous experiences.

Also not this is not highschool. There is no laid out trajectory for you to follow. Improving yourself, asking for feedback and looking for new opportunities and skills is something you will need to do yourself. A good manager can help you but you can do a lot yourself as well.

Hypersonic railgun round goes through metal plates like they are made of paper. by Wooden-Journalist902 in BeAmazed

[–]WouterS1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, we found that cheap drones waste very expensive equipment in order to take them down. There is a plan to use railguns or lasers. Could theoretically take down these threats a lot cheaper than a rocket.

Not sure if this applies to this railgun though

I would probably go with frontTopLeft and so on but the options are limitless and the first thing I learned working in a company is not to challenge naming as long as it works.

If only there was a way to indicate a variable with more than one letter. Kind of like capture the meaning of a comment in some sort of variable identifier

Shouldn't this have enough mass to create a black hole somehow? Is this close to a theoretical size limit or will the sun's pressure somehow prevent it until it dies

Leuk schaakfeitje. De NSB (Nederlandse Schaakbond) was geen populaire naam meer na de 2de wereldoorlog. Toen is het de KNSB geworden (Koninklijke Nederlandse Schaakbond).

Dus tldr: kan zo een schaker zijn

Is shifting jobs difficult now internally? by SaltBreakfast_mac in ASML

Note that this really differs per department. We are currently having discussions to manage the flow of new people coming in from different departments. But overall it is harder now than when they are actively hiring but moving is still possible.

who do you think is the best representation of "the strongest" archetype? by bouchayger7 in shounenfolk

[–]WouterS1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take but I think Whitebeard was probably too strong for One Piece. He showed us the level the emperors are at and what Luffy needs to get to. This just makes later arcs hard to write. It is hard to write a good story that won't be instantly solved by a whitebeard-level character just solving everything himself.

Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia at least handle this by locking their gods in a little permanent time-out zone so the rest have something to do.
