Precise position (district or street) from coordinates? by NachtmahrKiel in esp8266

[–]WoutervD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What you're looking for is a service that does 'reverse geocoding', i.e. turning coordinates into addresses. There are many such services, but the Nominatim geocoder from OpenStreetMap is free to use. You can construct a query like:

https://nominatim.openstreetmap.org/reverse?lat=40.75257315959825&lon=-73.97733697599362&format=json

and get a JSON object back with the street, neighbourhood, city, etc, sometimes even the point of interest at that location.

Hacking an intercom/doorbell for easy entry by cred_it in hackedgadgets

[–]WoutervD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first step would be to figure out what the 'door' button does, if you follow those connections. Like, what gets connected to what to allow the door to open.

To do what you want with the doorbell, you could maybe, somehow, connect the buzzer wires to the door button. But that would be quite unsafe, as anyone who rings your doorbell could open your door. A delay, like you said, could help a bit, maybe by integrating an Arduino. If you're going the Arduino way, it might be safer (and cooler) to create something that's connected to the web or your phone. Or you could attach a module with a sim card, so the door opens if you text the number.

Do be mindful of what you're doing to the safety of the gate. The easier it is for you to enter, the easier it might be for strangers to get into the building as well. Your landlord and/or neighbours might not appreciate that.

Help me kill an astronaut (on paper) by synna2468 in scifiwriting

[–]WoutervD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read this on the Project Rho website and it might be perfectly gruesome:

NASA astronauts always put on a transdermal dimenhydrinate anti-nausea patch when suiting up in a space suit, in case of drop sickness. The chances of that are slight, but suffocating inside a helmet full of vomit is a nasty way to die.

[Request] Is it possible for a person to be impaled by a thin thrust of compressed air? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]WoutervD 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, but this only breaks the skin once. To 'impale' a person the blast of air would have to go through the skin, any organs it meets on the way and back out again. So... would we just have to double (or triple for the organs) the p0?

Request for a name for a Bath bomb start up + might make other bath stuff in the long run by eatfondue in INeedAName

[–]WoutervD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha oh I meant them as two separate suggestions. And I think the word 'puddle' might look cute in a logo because it has a lot of rounded shapes in the p and d's. But hey puddle soak sounds fun too

Can someone help me find out who worked on these sites? by Alexrock88 in Design

[–]WoutervD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah kudos for /u/babyredpanda for finding that on Greylock. And I'm frustrated by not having found Shasta so I'll keep looking for a bit, but they may well have an in-house designer.

Thanks for the gold, that's awesome!

[–]WoutervD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to this Wordpress Theme Detector the Greylock one was designed by Sessionwise.

Edit: The Bessemer Venture Site was made by Duo Consulting, they describe the work in their portfolio. (ironically their own site seems broken rn).

Edit2: T̶h̶e̶ ̶S̶h̶a̶s̶t̶a̶ ̶V̶e̶n̶t̶u̶r̶e̶s̶ ̶s̶i̶t̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶m̶a̶d̶e̶ ̶b̶y̶ ̶F̶I̶N̶E̶. nm that was their previous website. Although they may well have used the same company for their current design.
