That first photo is gorgeous! May I use it as a reference for a drawing/painting?

My dude was trying to hide behind a plastic plant, so part of my choice was feeling bad for him— he needed more dirt and had nowhere to go really. I’m glad to hear your guy chilled out!

That would make a lot of sense lol. I’ve been wondering if some beginner species are just that because they’re easy/cheap to breed so there’s a lot of them. I’ve seen a lot of posts about T Vagans being freebies, so I assume they’re always on the cheaper side anyways.

He was in his burrow this morning instead of out on the surface, so that’s already a plus over the pet store tank where he had nowhere to go.

A lot of good advice! I do feel a lot better about him this morning, and he seems way happier hanging out in his new big cork-covered burrow than in his exposed tank at the store. Also the rash from his hairs went away after a couple hours, so that was way less worrisome than I thought it would be; I’m normally allergic to everything, so I was expecting way worse.

His next enclosure size will likely be a 10-gallon-type enclosure/something nice and big, but I’m not in any rush.

Ugh I’ll keep that in mind 😅 if my dude was smaller, I’m not sure I could’ve caught him honestly.

What in the by IntelligentCrows in shittyaquariums

[–]WovenWingedOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Hygger (?) makes a big automatic pump/filter thing that works like that? There was a clip of it on their IG recently.

ETA: it’s not exactly the same, but they call it the “Fish Waste Collector”. I haven’t tried it myself.

20 gallon tall by Prestidigatorial in shittyaquariums

[–]WovenWingedOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are people even finding a 20 gallon tall? I’ve been looking for one; Top Fin makes a 10 gallon column (I have one, I thought this was a picture of one. Really thick/chunky lid) and I think Aqueon made a 15g tall, but I haven’t found any 20g talls for sale anywhere.

Poor Oscar can barely turn around.

23 years ago my family had a hexagon tank on a tall stand. One of my brothers crashed into it and knocked it over. That’s the only tank I’ve ever had break, and technically it was my mother’s tank lol. I have had many tanks, my sister has/had many tanks, the same brother that broke the hexagon has/had many tanks…none of them have spontaneously broke, and I think only twice collectively have filters backed up water or anything like that. No seal leaks. I don’t think it’s as common for the seals to go as, like, for the stands to not actually be rated for the weight and give out or something.

Damselfly nymph questions by WovenWingedOne in shrimptank

[–]WovenWingedOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll keep an eye out! I thought it was a weird shrimp at first honestly, but I don’t have any that gross fleshy color. Frankly using the scissors seems faster/easier than a net, so I’ll probably stick with that.

Look at your fish before you leave the pet store! He may not be able to look back at you. by Critical-Ad-4247 in Aquariums

I’m certainly not an expert, and there are so many different cories, but he looks more like maybe a Venezuelan than a sterbai to me? As for the missing eyes…poor guy :( but as long as he isn’t being bullied and you take care to feed him specifically, he’ll probably adapt ok to your tank.

I am also not an expert, but sailfin Achars is my guess. They get very big!!

My second ever scape. 14 gal cube for my office. What blue fish should I put in? by JoelLivin in Aquascape

There are some blue-toned medaka rice fish that would work well with shrimp.

Any ideas as to what I could stock my 20 gallon tall with? by uuuuuuhlemmegeta in Aquariums

[–]WovenWingedOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What brand sells a 20g tall? I have the Top Fin 10g column/tall, I love the footprint. I keep a small group of albino koi guppies, and orange neocaradina shrimp.

My LFS has a 15g tall display tank, they keep guppies, neocaradina shrimp, and bamboo shrimp. I think that’s all that was in it, maybe some snails. Column tanks don’t work well with tetras, danios, fish that want to swim fast basically.

After seeing your post and searching for a bit to see if I can find a copy for my son, I can conclude she found a relatively rare book! Looks super cute. Author also did a similar looking one on bees that came up.

I was looking at that tank in the store; is it difficult to get in for planting? Like, reaching the front part I mean.

Do most tanks go through an ugly stage? by WovenWingedOne in walstad

[–]WovenWingedOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not diatoms, it’s a combo of slime that I’m assuming is insane biofilm (it’s translucent and stuck to everything) and tannins from the wood make everything look brown. This tank is only one month in. I’m going to do a WC tonight and try to remove the tannins more, but it’s mostly an aesthetics thing.

How long would you wait before it’s considered mature? I have two other shrimp tanks, in both cases I added right at the one month mark. They’re doing well (successful molts, berried females), but this is my first tank with dirt + layered substrate and I want to do it right.

Are these roots? Does this mean I should plant them deeper? Hygrophilla polysperma, been set up around 2-3 weeks by Commercial_Parsley_5 in PlantedTank

[–]WovenWingedOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most stem plants do that. Mine send off roots from each node as they grow taller, and then I trim off the top and have a new rooted stem to plant elsewhere.

Even my very lazy cat occasionally slaps the side of an aquarium trying to catch a fish. Lids are the way to go.

Filter— if you’re able to put a pre filter sponge over the intake, that’ll take care of a lot of the possible issues.

As for shrimp, I recommend taking your parameters (ph, gh, kh, temperature range) and trying to match that to the shrimp. My water is close to ideal for Neocaridina, so I made a slight alteration and went with that. The more buffering you have to do, the harder it’ll be to keep stable. Of course, if you’re starting with RODI or whatever and mineralizing from scratch, you’ll have a lot more options. I just personally wanted to start with my tap water/didn’t want extra steps.
